This series holds a dear place in my heart because it was my very first Asian drama, ever. I remember finding it randomly on YouTube and clicking on the thumbnail, lol. Is it S tier? Nah. But it's really cute, and a great start for any newbies out there.
I've only watched this once, and that's exactly what bugged me since episode one. The mother is just SO unloving,…
Thank you for taking the time to explain all of this. Yes, I find that when watching historical dramas, it’s essential to view them, as you mentioned, through the lens of their period. I've been watching C-dramas for years, yet there are still plenty of things I learn just from watching the shows. Thank you, and happy viewing!

Oh, that's interesting, you say that about the translations. I remember watching the first season on YouTube. Yes, I've watched Hidden Love, and I absolutely loved it :)
I’m watching this for the third or fourth time. I don’t remember the mother feeling so…unloving. I…she…can…
I've only watched this once, and that's exactly what bugged me since episode one. The mother is just SO unloving, distant, and cold. I imagined it must be due to fighting in a war, but still--it's not entirely natural.
Rewatching this drama. It is such a masterpiece... I just watched Prisoner of Beauty but sadly it really doesn't…
I'm about to finish Prisoner of Beauty. I honestly feel the same, just opposite dramas. LLTG is beautifully directed, and the actors are amazing. It deserves to be high on the ratings list. However, it is also very long, tedious, and filled with political nuances that can be difficult to grasp every time you watch it.
I imagine that for native Chinese viewers, it might not be as challenging. But as a Westerner, I found it to be a bit overwhelming, even though I’ve watched historical dramas for years, including ones like Yanxi Palace.
I feel very mixed about this. I had a hard time finishing this, and wasn't interested enough to start the second season. Somehow, this just wasn't tickling what I needed at the time. I am willing to give this another try in the future, but not anytime soon. It's not my first Zhao Lu Si drama, but it's always a bit hard to get used to her voice. I also didn't particularly like how stiff the ML was. Don't get me wrong, he's a great actor, but something about his role in the story wasn't quite doing it for me. The first episode dives you right into the mess, and it's hard to keep everything in check (remembering everything) when you don't watch consistently.
I can't wait for this to come out.
