It’s worse than I expected

I unfortunately completed this drama but with the help of the fast forward ⏩. When you have to fast forward a drama with 15min run time then you already know it’s a terrible drama,
Funny enough it really could have been a decent enough drama even with the run time but I don’t even know how much a better developed plot could have saved this especially with how bad the acting from Mew was, I wanted to give the acting 1/10 but I ended up giving it 4/10 because the SML did a really decent enough job and shouldn’t be punished for the bad job the more experienced actor did.
If you haven’t watched this drama and thinking should I go for it just to see for myself, I sincerely employ you to not do it.
A lot of people in the comments accusing people of hating on the drama because of Gulf, do you think everyone is a delusional hormonal teenager without a brain like you?, if majority of people say something is bad, then there should be some modicum of truth in it?
There is no ifs and buts about this drama though, it’s really bad, a no plot drama with horrible acting. It was so painful to watch actually.
I obviously do not recommend

Should have dropped

Review @ ep20.
So this was on my watchlist because I like YangYang but dang.
There is so many things wrong with this drama and IMO the only good thing about this drama is the visually appealing casts and their camaraderie with each other and also some of the emotionally charged rescue scenes.
So far this drama doesn’t really care about details/continuity and also getting proper procedures right. I am by no means a medical professional or a firefighter but even I can tell a lot of things that has happened so far didn't seem right and is so unbelievable and unrealistic but I guess the emotional tug of it is canceling out the lack of realism for a lot of people.
Then let’s get to the main leads, I love YangYang but the constant stoic frowny face was not giving at all. Sometimes his expressions were over the top and not adequate for the corresponding scene.
That face worked in Who Rules The World because he was supposed to be shrouded in mystery as Prince Feng Lanxi with the alter ego of Hei-Fengxi, it didn’t work that well in You Are My Glory but the script/plot in that one was better and also the chemistry/maturity of the characters covered up for it. I guess YangYang equates serious/intense with Stoic/frowny face.
But in this one I can barely feel any chemistry between the leads (which is surprising considering the rumor that they are dating). We are being told that they have this epic love that has made both of them stay single and maybe even celibate for 10years but I just can’t see it in the present time, we can’t see why they like each other because they end up fighting after almost every conversation and don’t seem to have the same life ideals and values. Even the flashbacks we’ve been shown so far doesn't really show me this epic love story, it was cute and all for a high school romance but nothing so life altering in the way it’s being presented in the present time. So honestly it doesn’t really make you care about the lead’s getting together. How many high school romance make it all the way?
The FL is basically suffering from Stockholm syndrome with her family and I seriously get the trauma she is dealing with but some of her character portrayal doesn’t make any sense. She’s very weak/meek towards her mom which is very understandable according to the storyline so far. But I don’t get why she is sassy/bold with the ML one minute but whenever they get into the rinse/repeat rollercoaster scene that has been their interactions for the last 20eps where they have the we can’t together because I don’t have the courage to fight for you but I will be stalking you and asking you why you aren’t seeking me out all the time & fighting for me even though I am the one that can’t commit to the relationship because of my family conversation and she’s uttering this words in the most lowest voice possible with downcast eyes and pathetic/demur demeanor.
I honestly tolerated the pathetic/weak/timid/demur characterization of the FL because of the upbringing she had but my tolerance level went to ZERO after the supermarket scene in ep20. The female lead had always not only stood up to her creepy delusional brother prior to that scene but also even lashed out at him but all of a sudden we are supposed to accept her acting terrified/petrified of him in the supermarket all because of a freaking bag of chips, puhhhhh-lease. That scene made zero sense and was done for no other reason than the ML and the FL’s brother to have a testosterone filled pissing contest and for the ML to be the hero and save the day by rescuing the FL and honestly it was just beyond ridiculous.
I should have dropped this drama but I will complete it with the help of the fast forward ⏩ button and except you really like any or both of the leads or you just want to watch a fire fighting show where you don’t really care about accuracy and correct details/procedures then go ahead and watch this otherwise I strongly advise you to not bother with this.

Updated review after completion.
Even with the fast forward ⏩ this was a struggle to finish. It didn’t get worse by any stretch of the imagination and although there were lots of cute scenes and heartbreaking scenes that tugged at the heart, for me it didn’t get any better either.
Typical CDrama kumbaya ending. It’s so weird that a wedding was talked about so much in lots of episodes but there was now no wedding at the end of the drama, I don’t really understand the directional decision on that but honestly I don’t even care because I was just happy to finally finish the drama and put it in the forgotten pile.
The drama just had lots of doom and gloom and the romance while cute at times was very muted for an adult based drama so it didn’t even balance out all the heaviness of the doom and gloom.
I definitely won’t ever be rewatching this. Like I said earlier except you are a HUGE fan of either of the leads or want to watch a highly questionable “right procedural” fire fighting and error filled medical show, by all means have at it, if not, do yourself a favor and don’t bother with this.

Was not totally for me

I shouldn’t have read so many reviews like I did before finally watching this. My expectations were seriously so high but I ended up not really seeing what majority of the people who have watched this were raving about so I guess I am in the minority with this one.
This was a very cute fluff albeit with no bite. I like me some romcom with fluff but I need it to have bite in it and this one didn’t for me, so I struggled to finish this. It took me almost 3weeks to finally finish this drama even with employing the fast forward button a bit.
I did enjoy Sang Yan a lot when he was onscreen. Shame he didn’t have more screen time. The proposal switch out was cute and different, I am not so sure about parents attending a proposal but to each their own.
This is not something I would rewatch but if you are a fan of both leads as I am plus the fact that majority of people love this drama so much then go ahead and enjoy the gooey sweetness.

The inconsistencies & lack of continuity was intolerable for me

Review @ ep1-14
I actually do like this drama but I so wanted to love it for the sake of Zhou Ye, became a fan of hers after watching her in Word of Honor (I can’t rave enough about that series, special shoutout to the one and only Chief of the Ghost Valley, the philanthropist Wen Kexing) but I don’t love it so far. There are so many continuity fails but I will highlight two.
1). He had huge scars from Su Ying stabbing him in ep1 but all of a sudden the scars disappeared few episodes later
2). When he went to retrieve his sword the first time, the journey was so hard / tumultuous that’s why Yan Hui couldn’t go with him but when they went the second time, they just basically strolled into the place.
She keeps losing things just for the sake of furthering the plot which is out of character for someone who cherishes everything she has.
Also once again we have a female character Su Ying who is so obsessed with a man (the only difference this time is her obsession isn’t with the ML) she is extremely vile and vicious and willing to go to any and all length for him. This perpetual CDrama plot is getting so damn old. Especially the level at which they make this female characters reach. It’s beyond ridiculous and unrealistic. I personally don’t know any woman in my real life who behaves in those extreme ways.

Update @ep21
I am struggling so hard to continue this drama. It’s not terribly bad but it’s not great either. The acting from the ML is actually so bad. He’s had exactly one expression so far. He’s acting range is very limited IMO but he’s handsome so I guess that covers up for lack of acting abilities to some people. Whatever floats anyone’s boat….
The comedic parts of this drama just feels out of place for me.
One more thing I don’t care how handsome or beautiful someone is, or whatever reason they had to stab and almost kill me, nobody is falling in love with someone who literally stabbed them and left them for dead. The lovers of this series can try to justify it any which ways they like, “he has to save the kids” “he was going to return the protective heart thingy to her so he knew she won’t die” etc but to look someone you claim to love in the eyes and stab them for the 3rd time I might add is just beyond unacceptable. He could have asked for it but nah, let’s stab her and then she literally fell so badly, he didn’t even try to break her fall, he just left her there, but wait, he’s really so sorry and because he’s so sorry she has to understand and not only forgive him but let it go and continue the relationship after he couldn’t take 2mins to ask for it and just had to take it in the most cruel way possible. I am sure eventually she’s going to forgive him and they will live happily ever after but that’s a relationship I can never get behind so that arc of the drama has already left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Update @completion.
The production team for this drama really dropped the ball big time especially the editing department and script writers. So many inconsistencies and lack of continuity. The errors in the details was just way too much for me to ignore and tolerate. Marks appear and disappear in the same scene. The characters powers and strengths (with the exception of the dark lord aura guy) where so inconsistent and felt like it was based on what each scene needed. I can go on and on but I have already spent days watching this drama and that is enough time I’m willing to give this drama.
The only thing that was good for me in this drama was the costumes., they looked beautiful and rich.
I am obviously never going to rewatch this drama.

Just ok

It really was a weird drama in regards to how I felt about it, usually I have a whole spiel after watching a drama but I am almost loss for words on what to write with this one.
Although the couples were cute and adorable, the plot was thinner than a sheet of paper.
I simply can’t forgive a mannequin mouth press dead fish kiss especially from the lead couple of a series in a show done in 2023, but the other 2 couples delivered, I just wish there was more of a plot.
There were some good dialogues and banter though.
Overall ok and easy/fast drama to watch.

Average

This was not so good but it wasn’t so bad either, it was just basically average IMO.
People who go through the type of trauma Uea did, need to seek professional help. This BL dramas infer that once you fall in love, you automatically get healed, I am by no means a professional but I don’t think it works that way. The one series that I have watched where one of the main character was suffering from mental health problems and was in therapy was The Eight Sense.
There was some heavy emotional scenes in this but I felt it didn’t translate enough through the acting, there was some crying scenes but no actual tears were shed. The actor that played King did the best job IMO and was hence the bright light/spot in the acting department of this series.
This is another series that I have watched where the parents were there for the engagement (first was Hidden Love), is that becoming a trend now in dramas?
There were some steamy steamy scenes in this (I guess that’s what some people referred to as soft porn in their reviews) so if you like that then you won’t be disappointed.
I won’t be rewatching this though.

Didn’t really care for this

I actually had this series on my watchlist for a long time and I was left highly disappointed. This is a very forgettable series IMO.
I don’t know if that was a directional decision for the actor Yoon Do Jin to portray the character in that extreme manner but the overreacting/overacting/pouting and then combined with the loud voice was just so intolerable and off putting to me. I don’t know any 20year old male or female who talks and behaves like that especially in 2023 and I don’t care to know any either. I finished this solely because it was a short series, otherwise I would have dropped it.
IMO there was zero chemistry between the leads, it felt more like older/younger brother relationship to me. I also agree with some other reviews, who are questioning why Yul will not only fall in love but also want to date YeChan, I too cannot for the life of me understand why Seon Yul will fall in love with YeChan but to each their own. Someone else in their review said that love works in mysterious ways, so I guess I will take that as the explanation for this, even though I’m not buying it.
This is obviously a no rewatch for me and I really regret not dropping this. I highly do not recommend.

Hu Ge is Mei ChangSu

When I watched this the first time I was like nah although I liked it I won’t be rewatching it but I ate my words big Time because I am currently rewatching it.
I’m rewatching solely for the purpose of watching Hu Ge bring Mei ChangSu to life with his loyal band.
Genius strategic mastermind who plays chess while other are playing checkers is the best way to describe the character known as Mei ChangSu/Sir Su/Su Zhe.
He’s impenetrable stares we’re so chilling, it was actually one of the things I liked the most about him. Plus he’s calm and nonchalant demeanor when facing off with his enemies. He portrayed being sick to perfection, I actually would have believed he was really sick.
He had such a majestic presence, it was really a good watch the first time around and now I’m so looking forward to relishing in all his genius glory on this rewatch.

Most fleshed out series IMO

Before I start, I watched Story of Yanxi Palace then I watched this, I did the same thing again with the rewatch. I rewatched Yanxi & right after rewatched this again.
I didn’t review this after watching it the 1st time. Now I’m reviewing after the 2nd watch.
Having watched both twice I still prefer Story of Yanxi Palace majorly because IN MY OPINION Wei YingLou is the greatest female character ever made anywhere in the world. Wei YingLou is everything i am. She’s so fearlessly badass, she’s extremely loyal to the people she loves and most of all is not shackled by useless emotions that have been designed & perpetrated to keep women obedient. She’s cunning and ruthless and that’s one of the reasons I love her. I love you forever my most iconic Imperial Noble Consort Wei YingLou aka Empress aka literal QUEEN.
MingLan was ruthless when she was pushed to a corner and she’s super smart and calculating, she knew to guard her heart, and I really liked her character a lot.
This series is the definition of character development. The main characters were so fleshed out (this is the most fleshed out character driven series I have ever watched) we knew who they were, what their motivations & desires were, their short comings and strengths.
Our power couple did turn out relatively well and “normal” when you realize that the both of them came from families that were competing for the worst family of the year awards. Gu’s family ended up winning the award in a landslide..
The only thing that irked me was that we didn’t get to see how Molan was treated upon entry into her matrimonial home, I badly wanted to see the shock/heartbreak on her face as she entered and saw a very pregnant concubine chunke (Sue me I’m petty like that). Also the demise of Gu TingYe’s stepmom was so anticlimactic. I feel she died so easily. I wanted her to experience real long drawn out pain/anguish but alas it wasn’t so, like I said sue me, I’m petty like that.
People need to stop telling women when and how to feel anything. A lot of men in this show & in the real world will be dating/sleeping with different women and not love any of them. When the women are now seeking for the men’s attention, these women will be called clingy (especially in C & K Dramas) but when a man falls in love with a woman she is automatically expected to reciprocate those feelings, like she should be grateful and happy that he loves her, (that was one the foolishness that pissed me the hell off in the VIKI comment section where I watched), the audacity of a woman to not reciprocate a man’s feelings simply because he’s handsome & loves her, gosh the travesty. *Insert sarcasm*
I do thank God I wasn’t born in that era because I know I wouldn’t have survived it, so in my opinion, the good/kind women of the era portrayed in this series are definitely the real MVPs.
If indeed they had such evil vile scheming women then in that era, then damn, too bad, because it seems like women supporting women have been a farce since the beginning of time & I can’t see any end to it. At least that time they were not dressing it up prettily like they are now. #MeTooMovement my ass.
All that being said, shoutout to MingLan’s girl squad they were literal goals. I loved each and every one of them.
The best scenes were when the sisters (Big Madam and Madam Kang) fell down (happened at different times/scenes) Gosh I watched those several times.
Nanny Chang’s rant to Madam Kang that caused her fall was so epic, it was a masterpiece.
To end this, it was a really good series and I will be back in a few years to rewatch again.
But for now, adios to my scheming power couple…..
Rewatch Value 10/10 ( I have watched twice and will rewatch again)
Overall 10/10

It’s way overrated

I’m currently @ ep4 but I wanted to say this, when your mom tells you that the only reason she gave birth to you was so you could look after your brother, wow, I don’t know how anyone can come back from that, because that’s just so wild and traumatic on all levels.

Update after completion.
Honestly I like the premise of the drama but some details in the execution left me smh. That Ok psychiatrist hospital was just a prop in the drama, there was basically no work done there, it was just for gossip and drama. The three leads had severe traumatic experiences but they didn’t seek extensive treatment, they should be in therapy both individually and collectively before they can become that real family they are seeking, after everything they went through I’m not buying the kumbaya family times without proper treatment for the 3 of them but what do I know. I know that Sang Te met with the director doctor sometimes and Gang Te also talked with him a couple of times too but it felt to simplistic in terms of the severity and enormity of the situation.
I finally decided to watch this drama after a long time of putting it off, if I never watched it, I really won’t be missing much IMO, so I can’t say I recommend or not.
I definitely won’t be rewatching this.

Way overrated

Honestly this was 1/10 for me, the ending was a bit rushed IMO but the last 2eps gave off lots of good feels. I liked the leads relationship so because of that, I will give this 5/10 even though I think it should be less because it was dragging and boring for most of the 16eps. After watching the whole series, I couldn’t see what the hype/rave reviews was all about except the fact that most of the viewers seem unhealthily obsessed with the two MLs especially with Lee Dong-Wook hence the inflated ratings. This is nowhere near a 8.0 rating much less 8.8 rating, IMO.
I swear to God the delusional castle that most K & C Drama fans have built does host a lot of idiotic individuals. People were literally wailing and crying in the VIKI comment section. How the fuck are you wailing and crying in the comment section about Kim Shin putting his hands on the Grim Reaper in Ep13 (let someone kill your whole fucking family and let’s see how well you react when you are face to face with the person, I’m sure you will hug them because OMG *insert sarcasm* they are so handsome and you even got to be friends with them before knowing). This is a fucking tv series you morons. He was not actually trying to kill ya”alls precious Lee Dong-Wook. Like WTF.
K & C Drama fans will be all up in their feelings when their so called popular and handsome actors are MLs. They will stay bashing the FLs of these actors (deluding themselves with the rhetoric that she can’t act, she’s whiny/clingy or because they feel that she’s not good enough to costar with their precious Male actors) but the MLs are always beyond perfect and above reproach and can apparently do no wrong. These male actors don’t even need to do much or have any sort of great personality, they just need to be “handsome & hot” and viola they are all perfect in all their ways. As a lady I love me some handsome actors and I can appreciate the good looking ones but some “fans” I don’t even call them that, I call them delusional people who take it way too far, little wonder the poor actors/actresses and idols in China and Korea can’t publicize their relationships because of the unstable people that claim to be their fans….
FYI to the above delusional obsessive morons, all your revered male actors won’t read your comments, even if they somehow miraculously do, they won’t care for your trifling thoughts and opinions of them and their FLs, especially when most of them are actual friends with said FLs. So keep wasting your useless time bashing all their FLs in the VIKI comment section, VIKI, Youku, IQIYI etc review sections, here on mydramalist and any other tv series review sites, you will end up just being the one dying of anger and frustration while both FL and ML smile to the bank.
People were bashing this shows FL that she was childish and immature, I’m like she’s literally 19yrs old in the show and the MLs were 939yrs and 300yrs and were both acting childish with each other but surprise surprise nobody was bashing them, instead they will praising them, saying how they had such chemistry and people were shipping them (pure insanity). This level of obsessive delusions and inability to have rational/logical thinking because a guy is so “handsome”, lemme tell you, it’s borderline mental. Very unstable behavior.
And what makes it worse is that, It’s mostly females that you see bashing this FLs. It’s really horrible what women do to each other just because they want to praise and idolize a “handsome” guy that doesn’t even know they exist. Very very sad indeed

IMO, Believe the bad reviews

This could have been so good but it was NOT. I thought KBL has matured and moved away from their dead fish, frozen statue, no mouth movement, lip press that they call a kiss but I can tell you it sure made an epic comeback with this one. I have said it time and time again, it’s better to not have a kiss scene than have whatever this series gave us claiming it was a kiss.
The acting was decent but not anything great that would have made up for those dead ass fish kisses and that ending, really?
Anyways, I won’t stop anyone who reads the “bad reviews” from going ahead to watch because we all have a right to choose (I am a strong believer of people’s right to choose), and won’t stop anyone from having their own opinions, taste and all, hence why you see almost every product having a review section but at the end of the day, no matter the reviews read everyone still has to make their own choice. And who knows this may be to your liking but for me it was not my cup of tea.
The only thing I enjoyed in this series was the OST.
The overall and rewatch value is actually Zero but because that’s not an option I have to go with 1. But I strongly DO NOT recommend this.

One of the Greatest TV character ever made

The name Wei YingLou sent shivers in the hearts of people in the forbidden city. She turned that city on its head. She wrought havoc and avenged her sister. She came into the palace with a mission and boy was she laser focused on that mission. Everything on her part was annihilated. She knew who she was. She wore it like a badge of honor and made no freaking apologies for who she was.
Wei YingLou is IMO one of the greatest TV character ever made anywhere in the world.
I freaking loved everything about her character.
And boy oh boy that lightening striking scene was beyond iconic.

Did not care for this, at all

This is not a series I would ever rewatch cos I struggled to even finish this even though it was barely 15mins an episode, this was definitely not my cup of tea. I dislike woe is me characters and goody2shoes characters the most and in this series Cha Si Won is the definition of woe is me. Everybody in the world has stuffs they are going through. You were fat when you were young, news flash so was a lot of other kids. FYI I am not discounting his “tough” childhood but don’t go expecting people to be walking on egg shells around you when everyone is going through their own shit. It’s hilarious (and not in a good/funny way) that Cha Si Won is narrating his childhood trauma to Hyeong Da Un in ep6 of how people were always judging him before getting to know him but insert *eye roll* that’s exactly how Cha Si Won turned around and judged Hyeong Da Un after their first encounter .
I really didn’t care for this at all. I wish I didn’t watch it. I strongly DO NOT recommend.

The gaslighting & mental gymnastics ?

The gaslighting by the writers of this drama is of epic proportions lemme tell you, having dialogues like, we are now even cos you saved me 3 times to justify them being a couple down the road is very sick.
But they achieved their goal because the mental gymnastics that a lot of abuse apologist in the comment section are using to defend their support of a relationship that was preceded with abuse, torture and attempted murder is wild to say the least. You all can dress/excuse it however you like, is not going to change the fact that you support a woman falling in love with someone who almost killed her several times and abused/tortured her. Not like the stabbing and poisoning was not bad because they were but the ants and the water boarding, telling me that any same person will fall in love with someone who water boarded them and let ants crawl over them is pure madness and most of you really need to go reflect on the kind of person you truly are.
The level of shallow minded and below basic human decency and honestly intelligence with comments like, OMG they are so cute, OMG it’s so toxic but idc cos they are so cute, being more annoyed and disappointed that they didn’t get a kiss scene than disgusted that there was a relationship at all is all too telling of who you really are, FYI thinking watching and enjoying cute moments and kiss scenes trumps everything tells me you are not on any level that is worth respecting as a human being.
Aside from the COMPLETELY AND ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE relationship between the ML and the FL the drama is ok but I simple cannot get past that so for me this drama would be rated 3/10.
