This is possible. I have also made such observation. Variety show with CCTV, voice over and now special duties for the Chinese new year. This could mean they like him already. It doesn’t have to be modern. I think CCTV also like to promote their cultural heritage and Xu Kai can play a young Emperor. He did so well in Royal Feast. Xiao Zhan has an upcoming costume drama that’s for CCTV but the platform is YOUKU. Fire Investigator too might be a CCTV drama because it honors an important yet unpopular profession. Most dramas focus on fire fighters, police, lawyers, investment bankers etc
I also feel YOUKU might soon give him a costume drama historical or xia xia because in the past year they gave Zhao Lusi a costume and modern, gave Yang Yang a xia xia and a historical etc

Heard he now has better control if not 100% control over what projects or scripts he takes. This will be evident from now on , not sure about MoonLit Reunion but others - Fire Investigator and 800 meters are going to show us a better actor-Xu Kai.

I have a very, very hard time actually rating this drama because as others mentioned, it's absolutely excellent…
It was said that the drama was in two parts at first. But I think the platform decided to air it as a single drama.
