I'm not justifying her actions but what you find problematic was not considered problematic then. What the next gen might find problematic might not be problematic now.
If you chose to respond with love it's not lack of empathy but awareness of human nature in general people don't and can't change suddenly. You can't fix anyone by forcing them. Even if it's you yourself.

nothing is wrong with her, she is someone who is thoughtful and is afraid to get hurt so she often pushes people away. the beach scene where she says that as a child she loved building sand castles but was always afraid that it would get destroyed so in the end she destroyed them herself. The sand castles represent relationships when they get destroyed she gets hurt in order to not get hurt or feel worse she becomes the bad guy and destroys it herself. Its super relatable!
