My theory: The Emperor was the one who assassinated the Empress. In the first episode, it was said that the Emperor did not favor Nan Heng bec he's scared of his mother's power. And he favors the 18th prince bec his mother was who he wanted to marry in the first place but needed to abandon her for NH's mother. And in the futfutu. Chu Guihong will ally with NH to avenge his aunt whom he cherished when he was young.
