On Teach You a Lesson 4 days ago
While I think criticism is fair and valid, I also think that criticizing a work of art something it never intended to be is a bit unfair. I guess it all comes down to people’s expectations. Teach you a lesson falls into the revenge fantasy genre, the main appeal in the genre is the sense of poetic justice, the satisfying feeling viewers will feel once the big bad villain is taught a lesson or has been taken down. Even though the show touch upon bullying cases and issues surrounding students and teachers. The focus isn’t necessarily on exploring systemic causes or going deep to the root cause and solution of each issues but rather sense of justice and emotional payoff which is why realism is sacrificed. It’s the reason why you’re seeing the main characters jump off roofs and act like they have 9 lives. It is also an action drama so every entrance & “lessons being taught” has to be satisfying and impressive for the audience. Some people are looking for realism & complex plot when the show is focused on creating a revenge utopia and delivering over the top action scene to get “Justice” which I can give credit for it successfully delivers a satisfying feeling seeing victims get justice and action scenes. In terms of writing and pacing the show is kinda iffy for me, after a while it does get repetitive which always seem to be a problem for me in these kind of revenge drama.

I got second-hand embarrassment watching A Jeong cling to the VP. It's so pathetic. Like, girl, stand up your literally risking your job when you're broke asf. She plays too much for someone who's about to become homeless. What makes me laugh the most is that the VP's wife, who is more justified to have A Jeong reaction, isn't even doing anything malicious against In A lol. A Jeong is really just trying to insert herself in places she doesn't even have business in.

I'm probably the only one who doesn't like this drama. The characters make dumb choices just for the sake of comedy.…
You’re looking for logic in a comedy & fantasy show I fear it was never going to work for you in the first place. Mind you the the title says Wonder-FOOLS. its almost given the character will make a fool of themselves & make dumb decisions for comedic purpose because they’re a team of “superhero fools” meaning common sense & good judgement was never there in the first place.

This show would also never work out without the two side leads. Beside them being a comic relief each of them play a crucial to their powers. Their individual power on its own is actually pretty weak however combined with others they make it work and create a stronger team. The show is about a group of people labeled as fools or outcast by their town become a team of superheros with defected powers. It’s set up to be comedic in the first place.

LOL idk if maybe it was because I was watching at 3 am, but man, this show genuinely made me laugh out loud. From the very first episode, they did a good job with the comedy, and the "defected trio" surprisingly worked well. Also, I really loved how they shot some scenes, especially when they were saving Chae-Ni in the lab. The cast really did well. I liked the grandmother and granddaughter bond; it was fun to watch, and I gotta give props to Cha Eun Woo acting here, I typically can't stand it, but whoa, major improvement from him.

Genuinely surprised by Cha Eunwoo. He's really good in this drama.
I'm so surprised I was able to get through the show; normally, his acting bothers me. But I think he genuinely has improved, or perhaps this type of role suits him more.

So you are not happy with the cliches but when they break away from the SML cliche you're also not happy?
This just brings us back to point zero. I stated before in my first comment the show uses the “same cliche, plot, villain & twist” meaning in my opinion yes I hate that they went the cliche route when more could’ve been done with the plot especially in the 21st century setting of a historical rom-com. That also includes my opinion of the SML being evil as cliche, as it’s a common tactic used by writers not in just in kdramas but also in books, fanfics, movies etc in order to avoid second male lead syndrome. I replied to your comment only to inform that evil SML story isn’t exactly that much of a breath of fresh air for me at least, I quite find it cliche because of all the books, shows, movies and manhwa especially, I’ve watched or read that overuses this type of SML plot. Your first comment contradicts my point because from my point of view “the break away from SML cliche” is just really cliche to me and isn't anything new to me. Whether or not it’s a “destined to lose green flag” cliche or evil SML cliches what I wanted to see the most and would have worked for me is a better writing for the SML character. Given it’s a rom-com cliches are bound to happen, I don’t really mind them as long as they’re used properly. What matter the most for me is the writing quality and unfortunately for me the show just missed that mark in certain areas. Anyways that’s just my take on it and you seem to misunderstand just wanted to clarify exactly why the show didnt work out for me. Still it was interesting seeing diff view of the show. I’m glad at least it seems to work out for you.

So you are not happy with the cliches but when they break away from the SML cliche you're also not happy?
It’s really not though but I can see why you think so. SML plot line where they turn evil or red flag is so much more common than you think in stories especially in kdramas. To name a couple Vincenzo, The Heirs, Extraordinary You and even IU previous work Moon Lovers had the very same cliche where the second male lead becomes corrupt and emotionally twisted. It really isn’t an outlier anymore, it’s a recognizable variation of SML writing typically used to favour and flip sentiments in favour of the male lead. So I wouldn’t call it personally breaking a cliche if a SML turns evil because it’s predictable. Especially in this story because in a writers perspective every story needs a villain who else is better fit than the SML who happens to be the Prime Minister in this story?

Writers finally came to their senses at the end and realized their show was actually rom com.

I got to give it to the cinematography, acting especially from the side characters, chemistry and rom-com writing for still making the show entertaining despite the bad writing and pacing of the whole political plot line. Writers really just overcomplicated things for a rom-com. We were robbed of more couples scenes of Hui Ji and Grand Prince.

Out of all IU projects I’ve seen I would say this is her weaker one in my opinion, it’s not horrible just not my fav.

The Queen Mother acting was also top notch, she really delivered her scenes. Might not like her character but credit needs to be given where it’s due.

honestly shin hye sun is my #2 fave but ........ the first ep when she demoted him was so annoying .. just like…
I’m pretty sure the next coming episode will clear up why she chose to demote him. Some theory are saying she’s protecting him because of the pharmacy side of the company or because of the SML. Either way there is def more to it.

I agree, they should’ve stucked with the rom-com concept at the very least with the amount of episodes they were going to put in the first place. The political plot line is not as well develop and feels so rushed to me in my opinion. I feel like the writers are just trying to check off everything in their plot list. The story was just getting bigger not deeper in a sense. And it seem to me from all the suffering they been enduring these past few episodes the justice or revenge part didn’t feel as satisfying at least from episode 11. All the political plot writing is mediocre .

How are they breaking away from SML cliche exactly? It’s so typical for a SML to turn evil. All I’m saying the writing for his character is weak. His character is basically straying away from his reasoning for being a villain in the first place. It just seems out of place and inconsistent. His purpose no longer aligns with his actions. It just feels like the plot is making him act out of place from his internal logic and behave a certain way in order to move the plot forward

What I mean by safe route is following the same story structure of a genre. This kind of story has been done before countless times. They all follow the same structure &plot points with variations. Rom-coms with SML turning a the bad guy, villains inside place/family, poisoning etc etc. Those are all examples of same plot points used typically in period dramas which is what Perfect Crown is following hence the safe route. A rom-com in kdrama I noticed is never really a rom-com without any other factor of mystery, drama or thriller or any other form of genres, I find that it’s rare for a show to just go for full on rom-com, it’s why sometimes the story feels like it’s going overboard and gets complicated. Some writers pulls too much from other genre that it strays from their main genre. There should be a balance between without conflicting.

The writing just keeps going downhill. Idk why I can’t get behind Prime Minister Min being a villian just because he likes Hui Ju especially at the end it doesn’t even seem like he likes her anymore lol. Does he even care that Hui Ju suspects him or lit just said they might be enemies. I mean like as a SML shouldn’t you be trying to get her on your side. It would make more sense to do everything he did because he wants to control the crown instead, not because he wants Hui Ju. His villian character writing just seems so weak. The acting is there though. When I think about it more, this show kinda gives off a beautifully wrapped present with coals inside. On the outside the show is offers something new and shiny a lot of people were excited for a modern monarch romance but the plot is plain and boring. It doesn’t really offer anything new other than it’s a modern historical monarch. Same cliche plot, villian & twist, lowkey giving more makjang vibes with the amount of fires incident they were using to kill someone. They def took the safest route instead of creativity. Also all this villian arc I feel like is taking up way too much of the story, Idk maybe I’m just tired of seeing our couple deal with them. Like can we see some rom-com moments now plzzz and get off these evil ppl in my screen.
