Ok, so if there's a memory loss plot, I'll just wait with watching the whole show till it airs fully to read some spoilers. I thought of starting S1 now and get up to speed by the time S2 finishes, but memory loss for me is the single worst cliche that ever existed.
The mortal world arc is making me want to quit the show. I hate it.
Oh, I feel you, I was skipping like there's no tomorrow in those episodes... Such a waste of time. It does get better from ep 26-27 in my opinion though, still not perfect but at least way more dynamic.
Oh God, the mortal world arc was soo excessively long and pointless overall. I like myself some jealousy sidestory, but maybe in 1-2 episode tops, not like 5. The relationship progress was not worth it either. Just the same stuff repeated over and over. The chemistry is still there, but ngl, it had me a little tired with the show...
I have a very weird relationship with this one. Never watched neither wuxia, nor chinese historical dramas before. Also, I am kinda thrown off by dubbing in chinese dramas overall, it's really hard for me get into the story with dubbing.
So when I started this, it was a really different experience for me. I really couldn't keep up with the names, I didn't really understand the concept overall or the rules of this world. The start was really slow too, but at the same time it was lacking some more exposition for me. I got lost really quick and didn't know what was going on. But at the same time it was a bit addictive and I just couldn't drop it. So I started reading wiki, spoiling myself at times, to get a good grasp of what's going on, and it definitely helped me get through it, as I'm not the kind of person to avoid spoilers.
So after like ep 20, I was really hooked. This show has such a strong message about what's right and wrong, about making mistakes, about forgiveness, that although at times I wish it was executed differently (which may be because of my unfamiliarity with chinese dramas, I am aware of that), it was still a unique experience. I am not sure whether I personally would call it a masterpiece - but it is incredibly strong in exploring every concept it chose.
Also - bromance? What bromance? This is straight up romance with no action. I dare anybody to look at their friend like Lan Zhan looked at WWX. Dear heavens, it was just heartbreaking that they couldn't explore it more cause of the censorship. This was more romantic and had more tension than many recent heterosexual romances.
Overall, a very new experience for me. Will definitely have withdrawal symptoms for a long time though, which definitely means a lot.
Woah, this was soo good! My first korean BL, cliche on cliche, but I just couldn't help feeling those butterflies in my stomach. Wish it was twice as long though!
Oh the kiss. And the next ones, always after a fight, right until the very end. I quess the viewers remembered the ML from the 1st episode and just rode on that, because after tthe Netherlands he's just the worst example of abusive employer to lover trope from an early 2010s drama. Also after reading your review realized that Dali really was just a prop after the 1st episode.
I actually thought the story would've been much more interesting if it was about the male lead and the female…
YES. I thought it would be that kind of show with much more of a business side of things, something like Hot Stove League, the best one from the top of my mind. It started pretty well, with the ML's desire to become the director, him spotting some missed opportunities like the cafe and whatnot but then we got NOTHING. Just a quick mention that the manager of the cafe was changed and now 'everybody says it's a perfect dating spot' and some other things like using it as a wedding venue. Disappointing.
Also, what's up with parents in kdramas cutting off their children's credit cards? Sure they work for them but they make their own money? Is it some Korean thing I have no idea about?
I'm at ep 10 and I honestly find it difficult to say what happened in those 10 hours... Ep 1 was pretty cute but from then on the main couple each episode takes one step forward and 2 steps back. Main lead was interesting for like 2 episodes and then became pretty annoying. Don't really believe their relationship too - like the kisses came so suddenly? 1. How can you kiss someone who's just been talking about the tragic story of his late mother? Hug him goddamit, give him comfort, this ain't time for romancing! 2. She's slapping him cause she is offended by his words and he says to her 'stop or I won't be able to hold back'. Sorry sir? Did all the slapping turn you on? I mean you do you but it's a PG-13 kdrama and it came from nowhere...
For me, the main leads in S1 had a way more compelling storylines and character development, won't lie. But at the same time their character arcs seemed more complete than of the MLs in S2? So maybe that's a better choice to run with them
It was cute, for sure it could have fit into 12 episodes and at times it wasn't the most clever or groundbreaking show under the sun, but I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't somewhat enjoyable. The chemistry was there, just wish that we got to see PEB in woman's clothes more, cause she was STUNNING here.
EAW has its flaws. When the last 4 eps aired, I was so frustrated and heartbroken with some turns of events. But now, looking from a distance, it was a rare show which touched my heart. It made me want to watch every second of it. Its only major flaw to me is that there just wasn't enough time - to deepen the backstories of some characters, to make certain elements of the story resonate more, to not worry the viewers so much about our lovely whale couple breaking up. I loved most of the cases too, and I'm not one for a court drama, but this kept me interested at all times. I could see my life in it. I loved the relationship, although a bit cliche, such chemistry just doesn't happen that often. And after reading few comments, I'm starting to agree that the conflict was necessary, and im the end it was handled fairly well (though it was a bit overdramatic, and I still wish there were 4 more episodes after that. But I just can't be mad). When the show was at its best, it was extraordinary. When it wasn't, it was still a fun and memorable watch. It will stay with me for a long time. If the S2 airs, I will wait for it like crazy. If not, then I'll keep S1 as a precious memory. And I will tune in for future shows of the writer - she has a lot to work on, but I am pretty sure that she can get even better. Not everything we work on can be perfect. But EAW for sure was full of heart.
As for the rating - sure, it might not deserve such a high rating, technically speaking. But I can say that with so many other top shows. I'd rather give a higher rating to a flawed show I loved, which has touched my heart, than to a show which was technically perfect, but at the same time meaningless to me and I couldn't relate to it at all.
But neither the ML, the writer, nor the director are making me excited for this one...
