I'm here because of Jaehyun, and let me just say watching this made me super nervous for the remake. Besides the uncomfortable teacher-student relationship (Hyunbin is 17...), the homophobia in this movie made me hate it. They kill themselves so they can be reincarnated as a straight couple. I'm hopeful that the remake will reflect the values of 2022, but it does also worry me that the same producer who worked on this will be working on the series.
I read the manga a long time ago but I'll try to summarize it as best as I can.
**The following information will basically spoil the entire ending of the story!!**
Arisu and Usagi defeat the Queen of Hearts, the final card, and decide to leave Borderland with the remaining living players in the city. It is revealed that the game masters (like Mira and Keichii) were former players who chose to remain in Borderland and become citizens after collecting all of the cards. We later find out that every player in Borderland was a victim of a meteor hitting Japan in the real world. Those who died in Borderland (like Chota and Karube) died in real life. However, those who survived eventually woke up from the comas they were in with no recollection of the events that had occurred in Borderland. Usagi and Arisu run into each other and although they don't remember anything from Borderland, they end up getting married.
I will add that Mira's (the Queen of Hearts) guess at what Borderland was is a lot cooler than the actual ending in my opinion. She basically thought that humanity had gotten so advanced that the only incurable grievance they had was boredom. So she believed that every player in Borderland was just a projection of a random human from thousands of years in the future attempting to cure their boredom (in other words, Borderland is like a completely immersive simulation/virtual reality game). But unfortunately she was wrong :(
Although I already know how it ends, I still can't wait for season 2. I really hope they'll explore some of the side stories that were in the manga as I ended up finding them more interesting than the main story at times. I can't say I liked the ending but I'm interested to see how accurate it will be.
I just wanna say that this movie was BEAUTIFUL. As in the scenery, sets, clothing, props (and of course the actresses). I was seriously about to stop watching at the end of part 1 because I was not about to watch another lgbtq movie with a sad ending, but I'm soooo glad I kept watching. The only thing I didn't like was probably the end scene. I get the meaning behind the bells and everything but I guess I was hoping for something more... I don't know.... romantic? Anyways, excuse me while I go watch everything that Kim Taeri is in.
Even though I knew what I was getting myself into by watching this since I read the manga, they made Karube and Shibuki wayyy too sexy to just kill them in the 3rd episode :(
