This Drama is a perfect example of an intriguing idea ruined by inexpert writing. I was so looking forward to it since the teaser arrived. The writer had a great idea for the plot but failed at the process of writing the story. Actually, I think he wanted this show to be so many genres but couldn’t interweave them properly. Therefore, he bungee-jumped in all the genres without staying in one of them for the time to explore and explain it. Throughout the show I felt like exploring a foreign country in a tourist bus without getting out of it: incomplete and unsatisfied.
There were so many things that were left unexplained. Like one of the commenters here expressed their discontent over Se yeon not asking Cha Min even once about his death. I was wondering the same as well at the beginning, but after the wonky writing sunk in I realised the writer forgot to write that part, like so many other things.
An unsatisfying love story The chemistry of the leads was cute, but I couldn't get on board with their love story. I didn't see the beginning of it. The 20years they keep mentioning was only through mentions and one flashback. Then later she suddenly starts telling him that she always had feelings for him but he was too naïve to notice. Then they got all lovey-dovey amid the tension. I get YOLO and forget the tension around and carpe diem and all. But it seemed hasty and unfitted to the situation. The later parts were the same.
An Unsatisfying Mystery/thriller The mystery part was very frustrating. Mystery, for me, is all about relishing the journey or chase to the revelation. First off, everything was revealed too early on. Still, it could have been saved if the catching-the-criminal part was not so frustrating and lopsided. There were many good thrillers where the destination was clear from the start but yet I was at the seat’s edge throughout the ride.
Another thing in a mystery, when everything is finally unraveled there should be explanations even to the nick-nacks of the course, regardless of the ending. Like if everyone dies in the end, that’s fine to me if the story demands, but i would want to know why someone was wearing a red shirt in a funeral in that one scene. Trivial stuff like that, you see. Otherwise I'll keep thinking that was a part of the mystery too which remained unresolved. Here such unexplained things are in abundance.
An unsatisfying fantasy The eponymous main character of the story was just so underused, unexplained and sometimes forgotten. Minus the few times the one-liner instructions popped out of the magic ball, the poor thing had no story. It is a resurrection stone that brings back dead to life in the form of its soul. Got that part down. How can a mortal be entrusted with such kind of power! When Cha min mentioned that the stone changes colour with each revival, I thought they would explain that a bit more. But silly me! Didn’t learn my lesson from all the loose ends thus far.
I think this could be a one off mistake of the writer. He could have got a grip on the story if he stuck to one genre and tried to unfold it
The acting of the cast was good. Park Bo Young was as usual fantastic. I loved her character. Since I didn't see her character during the 20years where she apparently rejected him at all chance, i can’t decide on that personality. She was bossy and crafty with everyone but she also cared about Cha Min. I loved her smart, shrewd, no-nonsense attitude. I loved Kim Sa RAng too. She’s absolutely gorgeous.
Cha Min’s character was too nice for his own good and pretty dumb to boot. He was like the typical k-heroines. I usually prefer a good role switcheroo, but this is not it. This kinda character is annoying on everyone. But the more unsettling part about Cha Min’s character was -- as his mother complains in one of the later episodes -- his personality completely changed with his appearance. Did the abyss make that happen too! Just to him! Because no one else had any such change.
I liked Kwon Soo Hyun a lot. He played a completely 180 degree opposite character in The Smile HAs Left Your Eyes. Such a sweet guy. He played a very convincing psychopath here.
About Lee Sung Jae, is it just me or it seemed like his acting here is a lot like his character in “Gu Family Book”! Especially the way he talked.
I want to mention Ahn Se Ha a little bit here, the old Cha Min. I loved him more than AhS. He is a terrific actor. In this show only he showed two opposite shades so convincingly. His real shy, unconfident, nervous one. And in the episode where Hee Jin told the police about him being obsessed over Se Yeon and a flashback played along, he was scary creepy. Whether she was lying or not (again not clarified). But the way he played that personality, he could have easily portrayed the ultimate crazy villain of the show.
The OST is the only good thing about this drama (well that and the acting). I have been listening to it since before even starting to watch the drama.
So apparently a man dressed in a typical serial killer gear, black cap, mask and all, carrying a knife and acting total suspiciously got past raising any suspicion just because he's the driver! Seriously! Are these guys dumb or dumb!
I love KYK and he's my sole reason for watching this drama, but I am at episode 1 and Do Min Ik seems like a jerk! I am literally crying at the scene of Gal Hee getting fired under the peach blossom and him being cruel.
Who's this one secretary who secretaried the crap outta him for three years and ruined the tenure of their successors? Please someone spoil! I live for spoilers!
I just watched the trailer and thinking about picking it once the subbing is done. I mean no offence to the lead and the second lead actors 'cause they are beautiful and all, but since seeing Leo Luo's face in the trailer, I wished he was the lead.
