I had been postponing the drama for some time in spite of loving both the leads. Yesterday came upon this video and it got me over the bump, and I started it and loving it so far. I love how the video analyzes the 2 main characters, and the kisses, the other thing and the consent discourse around all these things.
Why did they reveal Uncle's secret move so early? It's like a thunb rule, you don't show your ace until the finale. Karate kid, all the bring it ons, step ups and those ice skating movies taught us that. Unless... he still has another deadlier move for the last fight.
Well, it's overcrowded, and I didn't like it. I mean this was the trope and the first part was the subversion. But that's not the reason why I didn't like it. The problem is it's not about "The Witch: The Other One", it's about everything except.
The first part had a story about a character, "The Witch", and the character was developed through the movie. We spend 90% of the movie with her, knowing about her, her family, her relationships, her environment. The rest 10% where she's not present is supplying us some or other information about what she's up against. But everything is in relation to her, without spending much time on other characters so Ko Jayun remains our protagonist. That's why I feel anxious when those super guys come to her house despite suspecting she may be perfectly capable of taking them. I feel anxious about her friend. I almost choke when Choi Woo Shik's character is seen asking something to Myung Hee's Police Chief dad for 2 secs. No one in Ko Jayun's good-life dies in that but i was constantly concerned for them. That's why the twist was so unforeseen and satisfying, not because she had the capacity to annihilate an entire army of X-Men, but because she planned it so neatly. I was routing for her not only because her foes were cocky cigarette smoking, gum chewing murderers and criminals (one of my pet peeves, cool and dangerous peeps smoke or chew gum trope)but because I was Ko Jayun's friend too regardless of her character about-face from a distraught, clueless, amnesiac super power girl who loves her family and friend to a coldblooded killing machine who loves her family and friend. And that's what makes the first part so good. I can tell you the story of Ko Ja Yun because I know about her and she has a very compelling story.
Whereas in this one I don't know anything about the "girl" other than she's superpowers, she cares about Park Eun Bin and her brother, she loves food, she is lost. This girl looks lost from a-z of the movie even when she's meticulously crushing Yong Do's bones. I feel no connection with her or Park Eun Bin and her brother whatsoever. So I don't feel anything when the brother, sister die. I was much more invested in Jo Hyun and her weirdo partner. I can tell a lot about their characters and i felt so bad when they died. They do a lot of stuff that's not just killing and mooning over food that tell me about them.
The only slightly interesting part about the movie is when "girl" decimates the precocious super bitches but that's because they were getting on my nerves by replicating the same type from the last movie without adding anything new. And the final showdown looked like they were trying to amp up the scale of super-powerness and special effects. The girl didn't' even have to blink to do anything. I mean they definitely wanted her to be Jean Grey/Phoenix without first establishing her as a fleshed out character I'd care for.
Hmm. I like Perth-Santa, but I am not liking their story. I love angst but where the push back comes back tripling. Like if one's a jerk to another, thsy will get a taste of their own med times 3. Here Yotha is being extremely selfish and constantly exploiting Gun and Gun is always waiting, ready to take Yotha back with a smile. And then Yotha has the audacity to tell gun's mom that he's trying to win gun's hurt. More like trying to scar him for life, you rascal. Can't wait for thie next drama where Santa forgets Perth. I'll take that as Yotha's comeuppance for tormenting Gun here.
