I think that the misunderstanding between Yang Mingzhi and Xiao Jue wasn't presented clearly. The drama focus's on Jue hitting Mingzhi because he suggested maybe there is no hidden truth, that his Father....
But the divorce with Hua Youxian came because he drank over some problem eating at him. When his Father kicked him out, he said two things, marrying a courtesan, but also defending a traitor against his Father. The latter was the I'm worthless that he couldn't reveal to his wife. Keeping a secret from his wife and not allowing her to share that burden. When He Yan lectures him, there were two implications. That is why Xiao Jue tells him that Jue's Father's conviction had no connection to him. He starts with that. Not with making up with his ex-wife. Mingzhi paid a severe cost for trying to help his friend and keeping it a secret. Divorced, being kicked out of his Family, stuck with a dead end job. It is not the only instance in the drama where people tried to help in secret.

She was much better after He Yan defeated the 10 soldiers and gave her pep talk and later during the attack. But by then she was just one of the crowd of women.

I think it is more of her command presence. She gives orders like she expects it to be obeyed and carried out. Especially seen in ep. 8 when she orders her commanders to refrain/ to stand fast in front of Lord Li.

I think that this is the female general that those not happy with HeYan hoped for. Or rather this jumps into her acting like a general from the start.
I enjoy this and enjoyed Legend of the Female General, too.
