As an aside, I think that the director and screenwriter mislead the viewers was why Pei had to die. The resentment against Pei and her desperate desire to save him made her the despotic leader that would have undone all of the good that she had done so far. Look at her grilling the midwife. Threatening to protect her on one hand and then on the other hand threatening to to kill her family. They make it look like he was protecting the identity of their births. Mei Si and Liu Taizhen shows us the path that the main couple may have taken were Mei Zhuyu not been half demon and a demon hunter.
