I would blame the scriptwriter Zhao Lin who penned both but with different directors.

The elder sister died. What could be learned is that to keep an obsession in the end only endangered the Princess' life and ended Marquis Chang Jin's life.
Apparently there was a divide between the director (who wanted a sad ending) and the screen writer (who wanted a HE) If Butterflied Lover is a take on Butterfly Lover, it should have been a SE. And we know that SE like that go over like a lead balloon. Had we seen from early on that the love was doomed, then it might be easier to swallow.

Rain Lu is different in Butterflied Lover. (Gentle loving wife, a bit childish. Part of a very sweet love story,) And different again in the modern day Perfect Mismatch. (straightforward heroine. initially unintentionally the comedic bane to the uptight CEO ML) The former is a mini-drama. I think that maybe you may not do mini-dramas..
