The novel is but the drama handles it in a very subdued manner for obvious reasons. So maybe just a little bromance as folks say these days :)

Yeah, Winter Begonia...let me tell you, it's not been an easy watch. Too intense. But it's a beautiful drama. The cinematography, the costumes. Very very pretty. If you decide to watch it one day, let me know and I'll hold your hand through it 🤧😅

Hmmm I think in Xuanhuan dramas, the magic is not so present, or at least in a smaller scale than in Xianxia. Also, there's none of the resurrection aspect. Once people die, they die for good (*sobs*) or it takes quite a while and a very difficult process to bring them back.

As for the Western influences, I have no idea. If they were really worried about adding some Western influences, I'd say they better be ready to shoot two different endings 😹🤣

To put it bluntly, when she became a woman again she also became sort of...boring. I'm sorry, but she did. It's a sad message indeed, specially if we're looking for a strong female character and the one we get was actually better when she was a supposed to be a man, as you said. All that good work that Yang Zi put in, the excellent acting when she thought she had found her mom again, all those scenes were top-notch but she was still Wen Xiao Liu. Xiao Yao is just the typical princess suffering for not really wanting the responsibilities of being a princess and doing whatever CX wanted her to do. Not to mention her obliviousness to the things that really mattered hahaha. But that's not a topic for the main comment section.

Oh, judging by those awful script leaks, the production is bending itself in a pretzel to change a lot of important elements from the novel to the screen adaptation. They'll probably end up butchering the arc of the best character in this story 😞. As for more character development, eh, not too much to be done about those two :(

It could have been worn properly one more time, in my humble opinion. It's a look that never goes out of fashion.

For real, Xiang Liu and Cang Xuan are the standouts in terms of character development. It helps a lot that both actors are so incredibly talented. Everything about them is above average.

I agree with your views about Xiao Yao. There was plenty of potential during the first arc, but unfortunately, the story decided to take the easy way out and squash any chance of giving her a bit more complexity. Wen Xiao Liu was so much more interesting to watch.
