guuuuuuuuuuuuuyz why nobody is talking about ye li been living all alone in the mountain . at the end of ep 22…
ep22 Shawn Zheng finally climbs the cliffs behind the Mountain! It is empty. I had been wondering about this. In the beginning we saw that she clearly lived alone on the mountain with no friends but the guards. She lies continually about it and no one notices except her husband. At least he is not stupid.
There has to be a reason why she is so possessed, so the questions are many:
how long did she live alone? was she abandoned? what happened to her grandfather? where did everyone go? are some in hiding in the Capital? was there a massacre? a plague? were she and Qing Shuang the only women? she was trained in martial arts and medicine, by whom?
and if the Mountain is empty who in the palace knows about it and why do they hide it?
I was a little bit confused by theback and forth between the just-(almost/practically)engaged physical passion of the couple with the business successes of thenthre mpthers back in ZZ.
But then in one perfectr conversation the ey addressed the question of the two locers having been almost brother and sister in highschool. It put a nail in that ambiguity.
And then to use as the ending frame Xing Wu's speech on his business success/encouragement for graduates of their old highschool? It could have been so preachy, likewise for the whole small business exposition.
But somehow it wasnt. Often the required public policy pronouncements are tacked on/tucked into the end of a show very awkwardly. Nobody minds.
But pay attention to this one. It is elegant and carefully done. A very staid and traditional frame encompasses all kinds of growth and new ideas.
It clearly turns the story back to its roots as a slice-of-life community story, and keeps the personal romance firmly in context. A strong hand on the directors' part, really excellent relaxed careful acting by all of the main casr, not just the lead couple.
Ep30 The trial by golf game is just gross. And Xing Wu even had to play false modest -- "I picked it up from a client" -- instead of saying "I was a high school athlete and sports are easy for me".
That latest CCP/government directive, that the youth should not worship money, was sort of silly, but if we can avoid scenes like this where the poor but smart boy has to be humble with obnoxious classist dad...it would be great.
On Episode 18: The writers made all the men dumb just to make the women look smart.
I didnt like this episode -- its a bit of 'women rise together', and it feels like an obligatory nod to the female-centered' genre.. At its best it is a solid criticism of the useless literati class.
The rating is a little low here on mdl, but this is a pure niche show. Palace intrigue with a serious wuxia edge which totally throws the gardens and qins and calligraphy out the window. It resembles the new animation at times.
So not for everybody on mdl. It is doing well in the chinese overseas market -- Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan. So a show for cdrama faithful, lovers of melodrama and scheming and tragedy etc..
What it may represent is the fission after fusion phenomenon. Directors and writers have been playing with various new combinations of trope and genre , and as the export model heats up, some of these may become separate genres in themselves.
ATC is absolutely wonderful. Dont think it will even break 8.0 in the end. I pray with all my heart that we get more shows like this one.
Chinese mentality is different from western, most Chinese men need to prove that they are worthy of the woman's…
My take on this and other romcoms is that the woman controlling the relationship's intensity is very hardheaded and admirable. Moreover, I think this sort of practicality is expected and is a normal part of gender roles in family life.
That look on Xing Wu's face when she just looks at him with that no you dont glare, and he turns away and smiles...men are comfy, technically, with being a bit nagged in marriage..it means they are loved and feel secure.
Just my intuition from watching cdrama comedy. And that is a missing piece for non-chinese. It may be fiction that real women are like this, as is usual with gender stereotypes.
The interesting thing about this "good youth" drama is that the two of them were so good and studious and patient and all the rest that they almost lost their chance to be happy forever.
It is almost a cautionary tale. The moral is the opposite of what you might think -- DONT BE TOO PATIENT AND CAREFUL. Dont be too proud. Ask for what you want, take it with both hands.
Granted, I am still just at episode 28. The two of them are stiff as two sticks.
Ep27-8 Jeez-Louise. When they were in love in highschool I seem to be discouraged.liked the unspoken understanding. But now that has just turned out to be a really bad habit of not saying what they mean. Either that or now that they have finally gotten back in contact they are still producing that hidden confidence. At least Qing Ye doesnt seem to be producing a grudge and therefore doing stupid things. (Like going out with Meng suddenly to spite her recalcitrant love,) Nor does Xing Wu seem to be despairing of her love. I am pretty sure she was giving him the death stare during that strange dinner date.
ep1-2 on a rewatch, These are a good pair of setting up episodes. Main issues and themes. The most fun things are not the most meaningful -- the lecture on futuristic fashion, the "rugged man" training, the first lust rather than love.

He ties back her HAIR (shriek, almost as good as combing it out before bed).
