There was a 9 year gap from when the 2 brothers left for university and left Jianjian when she was 16. I guess it's kind of awkward after not seeing someone in person after 9 years and they only contacted each other to say happy birthday or other celebrations like new years. They basically grew apart because they were no longer together like a family like when they were teenagers.
