So I watched until first half of ep 12 (as suggested by few) and left on a happy note. I'm still traumatized by another show's ending so I don't plan to continue but out of curiosity, can someone spoil me what that "horrible ending" everyone is ranting about?

For something cute: knitting is weak vs Yeongshil. For underdog background: daddy issue is weak vs struggled orphan. For premise: really nothing is a match to the writer of the letters. I believe you, she got too excited writing HJP but yes it's hard to believe it's a "mistake". Like you said this went through writing professionals plus the entire production without hitting a red flag.
Is it also possible that maybe it was the writer's intention to confuse us and then "break the cliche" because we'll all be expecting the ML to be the writer of the letters? Maybe she intended a Reply series guessing game with surprise at the end. Maybe it's the production that failed because they credited ML right off the bat and casted 2 actors of different "status" giving it away. I mean it's not hard to believe they'd do this to get a bigger budget or to get the hype they want.
