Female lead was the only reason to continue watching

This series has a weak plot overall for me. Watch only if there is really nothing else in this genre. However the story flows well throughout this series. Very few frustration levels too.

The saving grace is the female lead Rain lu, she kept this series watchable while the male lead acting and looks are acceptable at times but its not the best couple romance and pairing that's out there.

The villain is also played well, with his beady eyes and irritating looks which i felt he acted and carried it out well.

The costumes, hairstyles and music for this series is also above average with very few day and night mismatches thru out the story.

Happy ending and beautiful fantasy series

To start off this review, the Main leads really have the face for such series. FL carries this series fairly well with many personalities since she had to switch characters. The ML also does well since his character is supposed to be icy thus the lack of emotions but the last few episodes did redeem his character as more fatherly emotions and personality is revealed.

Story can be confusing and have its flaws since its supposed to be a love story that spans over many many many years. However it is easy to track and the hook is also there since much is not explained outright. The fight sequences are decent too and somewhat believable. The female main villain looks good and convincing too. There are emotional ups and downs in this series but no frustrating flip flops like he/she likes me or not and 3rd party misunderstandings, the relationship is straight forward and focus.

Having watched falling into your smile and this series at the same time, ML matches and have better chemistry with the FL in falling into your smile but its still not the same level as his previous chemistry with Bai lu. But with that said the FL in this series still really looks very good with the cinematography, sets and decent costume sets. FL acting is also very on point in this series and she does carry this series more than the ML. If there is a complain about the FL its really just the "flatness" but i guess that cant be helped right lol.

This series is worth a watch but rewatching value should be low since the happy and loving times between ML and FL is low, likewise the chemistry is only average between leads. However the god world settings and storyline makes it a worthy watch if you are a fan of the genre. There are also 3 other sub couples but for me, its average chemistry amongst the sub couples too.

What I really like from this series is the soundtrack, it is very on point with this series, it fits the storyline, scenes and settings. Very much on par with Ashes of love soundtrack.

Love the cinematography but disliked plot

Its a magazine, in 2020, that is like the weakest subject matter I feel.

When watching this series, it will be compared to "my best friend story" which was aired mid way thru the broadcast of this series, so competition for viewership was fierce during that period. For me "my best friend story" is more of a slice of life drama about 2 friends that will do anything and protect each other. For Dear Missy, it feels ..... that they are friends just because they have to be friends. However this series has the better cinematography and is much brighter.

This series really started off well, but it just lost its wheels for me mid way, especially when there is just so many scenes with Guan yue and Ye Zhou. Their story was so fleshed out that it made viewership lose focus on the 2 FL till it seem frivolous.

Thru out the series I do not feel that Lu ke even loves Zhang mang and chemistry was poor for this pairing. Si yi and yao yuan romance was great to watch from the start, but because they part ways and si yi actually fell for Bai Xiao Chuan with kiss scenes, this resulted in many comments "that being an actress is really not easy when one has to have kiss scenes with an uncle". However the romance of si yi and yao yuan is just too messy and lacks substances due to the lack of development and structure. They just happen to appear, chat and patch up like its magic.

Overall if you watched the first 8-10 episodes and then watch the last 5 episodes. You really arent missing out on much, they are just as happily ever after as from the early episodes and just ended up in pairings.

Its just a romance series where no one died, nothing major happened to any of the cast and its happily ever after.

So for me the best scene in this series is when guest role Hu Xian xu aka Shi guang in "Hikaru no go", asked Juck zhang aka yao yuan if he plays "Go" in a bar (even the theme BGM for that series came on), as he has been searching everywhere for his friend. If you have watched that series, you will get the relation between this pair, because Juck zhang was Chu Ying in that series (Chu ying was the spirit that guided Shi guang to play and love the game of "Go")

Need to not look at loopholes to watch this series

Basically a fat girl that became thin and a model with a rich chef. Attractive ML and FL pairing but the chemistry between them is just average and not very believable or shipable.

To watch this series, you got to not look at the loopholes in the plot to survive or complete this series.

To begin with the plot is ridiculous, since the FL can become fat after consuming more than 1000 calories and then seemingly is able to lose weight easily after that to become normal. FL also gets cured after donating blood to ML's mom.

So the entire plot is definitely not something to be taken seriously. Its hard to digest this concept, the series basically revolves around FL hiding her secret and ML denying his feelings.

The comedy is also not strong in this series, unless if you are looking at the loopholes, etc model competition and all the girls/contestants looks like a farmer except for the FL.

Great fight scenes but weird romance

The fight scenes are great, story and plot is fine too. Even watching it 2 yrs later it still looks good.

But theres just too many characters in this drama so its flipping and switching from characters to characters way too much. Thus theres alot of fast forwarding for me since theres some characters which i am not interested in and find that it just choke the story.

However theres great acting from some of its many characters.

The romance however between the male lead and the female lead just seems weird, afterall the male lead is supposed to be 18 yrs old, so that makes the female 11 to 13 yrs old. Even thou she is supposed to be 15 yrs old, but lets be realistic, if ning que is 3 yrs old when he found shang shang, thats just impossible for him to have raise her.

Only good as filler

Without having watched JOL, these casts were new to me, however there are some good support casts in this series.

This series started out as an illogical slapstick comedy with some new ideas and concepts, but its hard to digest if you are trying to make sense of things. But thru out the 36 episodes, there are still some interesting comedy moments but just no LOL moments for me.

Mid to late episodes of this drama is when it gets bad, with the bandit arc, the death of my favorite bearded male servant, the divorce of ML and FL so that ML can marry the bandit chieftain. It just gets draggy and not funny anymore, so it becomes a grind just to get to the ending.

So for a series that relies on the story /plot to be successful, this series for me, did not had that. In a way it reminds me of one of those harem anime, where every female seems attracted to the ML, but since ML lacks in the looks department, this becomes hard to convince or sell to viewers. Since it does not have a relatable /good looking /great acting ML or many scenes with the FL, the romance and chemistry factor for this drama is also pretty low. In fact during the same airing period, I much prefer the rom com in "The Wolf Princess". The OST is also pretty poor with nothing memorable.

This drama is still fine as a filler, if there's nothing else on your list.

Fast forward and skip to ending

After 22 episodes of watching families eat and talk about their lives, struggles and neighbors etc, i decided to skip to the ending episode and fast forward that too. During the 22 episodes I have also fast forward after episode 10, because its just too draggy, OXJ would just dig deeper and deeper into undercover and its just more high school moments that isnt enduring or interesting to watch.

Overall I am just not invested or as interested in the 6 families in this series, so there's alot of fast forwarding to be done. Maybe its the lack of comedy or sweet moments in this series but it just cant draw out any attachments in me for the characters involved, even the romance is awkward like MXX and OXJ would just silly smile at each other and kinda lack chemistry for a couple that grew up together and are supposed to be infatuated with each other.

In the end MXX ends up with the narrator YDD while OXJ dies and it seems that MXX discovers the truth about OXJ when he dies. So if you are up for a slow and tragic story about OXJ then maybe this series is for you

Female lead absolutely carried this series

As the title suggests, this female lead which I had enjoyed when she was in Goodbye my princess, absolutely carried this series on her back.

Alot of the situations, scenarios and lines are cringe worthy but FL always looks perfect with her expressions and acting. I mean there are so many shows already with the small pox angles.

Its a pity the Male support casts and male lead doesnt match up to her abilities as compared to her ML in goodbye my princess. The chemistry between her male casts are average at best, while the chemistry with male lead seems so forced and fake from the male lead end too. So it was hard to ship or root for them as a couple. Hopefully she gets more series and gets matched with better male leads, as it was such a waste of her abilities. This got me thinking if the male lead was someone like Wang Anyu, this would have been a much better pairing and series.

This series when live was a drag to watch just because it got delayed for a week during the cliff hangers. But for the binge watchers this will be a worthy and enjoyable watch.

Defy logic and common sense

Watching this in 2021, the artist could have just drawn an incurable disease and be done with ML.

Of course back then in 2016 this concept of going into webtoon was fresh and interesting, but there were sooooo many plot loopholes in this series everywhere as you watched. It just defy any sense of logic or common sense, just gets messier and frustrating to figure out as it goes on. I find myself mumbling and grumbling at the amount of things FL or her dad could have drawn instead or the support cast reactions /acting, plot flow etc.

ML and FL chemistry also looks more like brother and sister than lovers. I guess its still a decent filler drama if you are looking for something that doesnt make sense to watch. But this is not the the most satisfying drama to watch in this era and will likely leave you wondering wth you have just watched.

Slapsticks not to be taken seriously

This drama does have serious issues like mental health, childhood, sports injury, family relationships etc, but its mostly slapstick comedy even from the start of episode 1.

To watch this drama, you got to forgo some level of logic /realism and manage the scenes at face value. Its a pleasant and light hearted series, great for passing time but not a memorable series based on plot and storyline. Just beware of the cringe worthy lines and dialogs.

Both ML and FL have above average chemistry which could be credited to their acting ability and experience. There is without a doubt on that. But as with kiss scenes in series my order is always Taiwan /Japan > Korean > China dramas.

However an obvious observation is that the older ML have a very well maintained physics but the FL kinda looks slightly aged, puffy / thicc etc. Its a pity because once a upon a time puff kuo was voted the sexist woman in the world.

Only together at last epiode

not sure what love rom com is this to have the ML and FL ending up together at the last episode only to separate with the FL leaving for studies.

surely will not rewatch and had to fast forward alot of the episodes.

just too much illogical plot as well. so unless you are a fan of either the ML or FL or any of the support cast, this series is hard to digest.

not sure how to make 500 characters for this review since it is so disappointing..........................................................

Cliche and BS plot moments

From the start its always going to be the ML ending up with the FL lead, so for romcom it is always going to be the comedy moments that drives the series. Yet the comedy elements in this series doesnt shine thru.

But the ML and FL acting, is actually watchable and is surprisingly great individually but doesnt really goes that great together. Ma Meng Wei as the FL has been doing well in her projects lately and I feel that she is still better in opps! the king is in love, chinese title 愿我如星君如月.

Ao Rui Peng also did well in this series as well as playing the 2nd ML in Beautiful Time With You, very high 2nd male lead syndrome in that series.

For the BS plot moments, the illness is really unbelievable and so is the cure. Likewise the ML and FL got arranged to stay together for 2 months. Also the singer superstar vs coe of a film company and are both brothers.

The breakers in this show is the ML brother and the FL best female friend. Especially when the ML's brother knew that ML is the FL's cure but still kept trying to win the FL's affection. Likewise for the FL best female friend that discourages FL from having a relationship.

Until episode 15 will they get together and of course they will get separated and only episode 24 its happy ending.

Promising Couple with season 2 coming in 2021

Having finished alot of historical costume chinese dramas, this drama is a nice change of pace and was more palatable than the likes of "The romance of tiger and rose" for me.

The pirate concept rom com is refreshing . This FL and ML coupling pairing although is new has also great chemistry and feel. The plot and storyline is just direct and does not beat around the bush much, so its much less draggy and frustrating to watch. The OST is also fitting and memorable.

Because of all these elements, this series has opened filming for season 2 and will be coming in 2021.

Nauseating and alot of fast forwarding

The first 10 episodes are good, but after that you can skip to the last episode.

Reason was what started to look like a promising comedy early on just switched on itself and tries too hard to be a romance drama.

By episode 10, you would have guessed who is the main villain and the story plot is just predictable.

The amnesia theme is just overused in this drama, the male lead, 2nd male and even the female lead all use amnesia as an excuse to self inflict and create pain.

Fight scenes are weak and only seem to exists because of its wuxia theme.

The ending was also weak, after 24 episodes, you would think that the male lead would have some sort of confession that wins the female lead over instead of just standing in the middle of some heart shaped candles formation and deliver some weak lines, then suddenly the female lead just falls head over heels in love again and they kissed.

A new obession

This drama is just so good. The feel good vibes also makes it light hearted to watch. Having added bits about whales also makes a wonderful childlike experience.

FL is just excellent for her portray of the character. Its my new obsession and i rarely get carried away. So i clearly had to write a review even before the drama has been fully aired.

I have seen afew of her works like kings affection, stove league, do you like brahms but this is just the best.

However i can see the many court scenes being too jargon heavy for viewers that might not like court dramas. But if they can sit thru those scenes beneath this drama is a heartwarming tale with comedy bits thus far till episode 6.
