Rating WoF 1.0 and accusing the creators of “disrespecting viewers” bcs not HE is absurd. There’s no romance tag—so what exactly do they owe anyone? This drama costs at most a few $ watch less than a cup of coffee, some even rely on pirated sites.
Unlike many recent dramas I’ve dropped because nothing comes to 50% of WoF from story, cgi and mostly acting, WoF captivates me with its intricate storytelling, layered foreshadowing, and profound depth. It’s a true classic steeped in Daoist and Buddhist philosophy—though not everyone will grasp its richness.
Yes, it’s polarizing. Fans fixated on CP, romance, or female-centric tropes may not appreciate it. But dragging it down to a 1.0 rating is unjust. WoF deserves recognition as the masterpiece it is—even if not every brain can comprehend it. There is really no need for me to sugarcoat it.

I'm waiting for LYX as villain as he recently said in interviews: Want to try villain character.

My wish list:

- A savy handsome well dress but ruthless drug dealer boss
- A Vampire
- A super intelligent serial killer dressed immaculately.
- A Psycho of any kind….🤣 🤣 🤣

He would nail this type of character, he is intense, he is really good..........

Only the producer asked scriptwriter to start writing S2 a few days before this aired. It depends on whether Youku satisfied or not with this drama result. Word of mouth is good, but suspense drama unless it is touching a big social issue doesn't explode, let alone one without proper marketing.

Oh, I like the cases, but just feel something is lacking here. I can't feel any character depth in the 3 leads.

After weeks of SLY data collection and compared them to TTOETM (I did an even more detail data collections during TTOETM airing) I finally able to calculate the total views for SLY across the 3 OTT platforms (TV+Web+IPTV). Based on various data and market shares each OTT, my estimate was between 2.6–2.8 billion combined, and CSM has confirmed this. This matches the performance of TTOETM, which also reached 2.8 billion views. I have argued that SLY’s success mirrors that of TTOETM. This proves that even non-romance dramas, when executed well, can achieve the same level of success.

While SLY may not have generated the same hype on MDL, which caters largely to romance drama audiences, its excellent production and its exploration of Buddhism and Daoism classics resonated strongly with Chinese viewers.

Finally, SLY would not have been selected as a China first 2026 CPOP nomination without such substantial and verifiable excellent data.

I’m proud LYX has produced 3 classics through Runyu, Tan Tai Jin and Tang Li Ci.

The producer already asking scriptwriter to start with S2, although I don't know if LYX will still be the ML. But yes, it is refreshing to see him on a non idol non romance modern drama.

On the contrary for me 1 ep a day is good.....I almost feel we need a break between the cases, where half of episode given to look deeper into main character life. This is like roller coaster never ending case.....🤣

Episodes 11–12 really leave you torn—do you choose the truth, or what feels right? It’s easily the most sad and lingering case so far….

WoF is a male-centric, non-romance drama blending Wuxia, Mystery, and Xinxia, centered on Tang Li Ci’s journey. It is a brotherhood story with a trio like MLC—some must have romance-focused viewers might imagine faint traces of romance, I’d say it does not exist.

Officially according to the drama official, Luo Yunxi is the sole ML with no FL. MDL lacks tags for second male/female leads, which fit the other 6 main characters both M and FL. Officially the 3 2nd ML are based on screen time and the 3 2nd FL are ranked alphabetically.
The cast listing has changed repeatedly and is largely ignored now.

By episode 10, the show starts dipping a little more into the characters. The cases are fun to watch, but I do wish we get more focus on the main cast deeper. TTW feels kind of like Law & Order—just with a spooky soundtrack playing in the background 😂

True, I'm also surprised how in sm scene they allowed to show the F dead body and another blurred entirely. Also some hint of Lgbt as well. Hopefully this is a sign of Ntra letting go and someone we can see Immortality.

That's bcs you have not seen the various praises from different producers on LYX, while I followed his news closely for 6 yrs. His next costume drama SP/PD producer claimed the same, said in interview thanking LYX for being the key to open his drama, Qiyi has rejected that S+ drama for 3 years in the row but directly approved bcs of LYX agreed on this projects.

His next drama to be filmed melon (which is his break up drama with his current agency), the producer has been waiting for him summer 2023, they visited him on the filming set in 2023. Immortality drama waited for LYX for 2 years from persuading him to accept the role and waiting for his available filming time. There were no other candidate.

This was voiced by a drama producer during livestream 2-3 years back in response to some comments mentioning LYX was not popular, and he explained what real popularity means." If you signed LYX, a direct meeting with the CEO of the big platform is guaranteed and with them mentioned -how can I be part of this, he explained hundreds of producer lining up hoping to meet the higher up in the platform never get a call back.

Not sure if you noticed, but during the 1stweek of Whispers of Fate airing, hundreds of accounts bombed the rating—dropping it from 8.3 to 7.9 in just one hour. I actually saw it happen live. Then they went over to IMDb and dragged it down from 9.8 to 7.6 overnight. Both slowly back to 8.3 and IMDB 8.6
About 3 weeks after it started airing, one fandom got upset with WoF achievement and began downgrading all his dramas, including WoF, again pushing it from 8.3 down to 7.9 again. Luckily, it’s been climbing back up slowly to 8.1, and IMDb is also returning to normal.
If you check Douban, all his drama ratings are low compared to similar dramas production that scored much higher.

Only a few C suspense dramas achieve big success each year, and they rarely match the scale of major costume drama success. MDL viewers prefer romance dramas & easy to follow plot, suspense get little attention.
TTW is LYX’s strongest modern drama to date in terms of production quality, his fanbase is mainly for his costume drama. Securing good project depend on agency strength. LYX has relied on his acting, while his agency forced itself as co-producer to insert their own artists—essentially, “if you want LYX, his agency must became co-producer, and must use several of their artists”
With his departure from his agency inevitable, we hope he joins a stronger company that can also secure good modern drama projects. So far, he has never played ML in big IP; instead, the IPs became big because of him.

Yesterday, the original scriptwriter of The Truth Within (Peeling Cocoon) revealed that the script was written 5 years ago and sold for adaptation, but despite many interests, still no production. The reasons were: the sensitive subject matter -concerns about passing censorship, and the lack of an existing IP, especially in an winter industry climate where only big IP dramas were prioritized. At the time, he regretted not publishing the story as a novel first, since a successful book could have provided the IP foundation to ease the drama’s path.

Everything changed when Luo Yunxi agreed to take on the project. Because of Lyx, the drama finally received approval, and the writer expressed heartfelt gratitude to Luo Yunxi for helping bring his work to life. During development, the script underwent revisions, and eventually another writer stepped in. Initially, the original writer worried that the story might be altered beyond recognition, but after watching the final drama, he is happy to see that all the cases remained intact.

Before the drama aired, the producers even asked him to write second season, which is why the current series has “Season 1.”
