This is an examplar of being educated and living in the big city vs in the small town. fl's parents divorced, while ml's family continued to stick together in this unfortunate household. I think the culture of "face" place a part of why everyone turns a blind eye with ml's family situation. Everything is kept hush or under the cover. They know the facts, but if no one talks about it openly then it's not exposed.
I really really like Chu Lin Yang, brother of fl. I also like the actor who plays him, Cao Jun. He's such an amazing martial arts actor.
