i wouldnt call it poor, just extremely simplistic. i know for some that could mean poor, and its valid but ive always loved simplicity and thought it could be an advantage in its own right sometimes. im only at ep 30 so far tho, maybe it takes a turn for the worse?

oh i read some of your comments here and you clearly like it, sorry i didnt mean to yuck your yum but as someone who typically likes old cdrama and shows i was shocked how much i hated this one and thought we were among the few such people 🥲 my bad

yeah i watched it cos its considered a classic but it was awful to me. awful acting, awful character choices and even though without a doubt some things about it are good, they werent the things i care most about in storytelling.
there are many, but if you value most production quality, then very few. cdramas only started looking spectacular…
fated hearts (not necessarily better but on par id say), story of yanxi palace (way better if you can bring yourself to start it)
to be honest its hard cos i dont know what exactly about PoJ you liked. the romance and chem? then go to fantasy and watch Love in the clouds, the characters? well theres plenty with better character work but the characters themselves are a matter of taste whether youll like them no matter how well written.
id say theres plenty out there to quench your thirst but maybe not everything in the same exact package as this one.
they are not similar characters at all. like at all. but ive seen that tiktok and its pointing out that the female lead and male lead here LOOK like live action maomao and jinshi. that they could be easily cast in a live action version cos they already look the part.
this show is nothing like apothecary diaries apart form them taking place in china.
believe me please when i say i love everything about this so far (im over halfway), but this is nowhere near the writing in Love Like The Galaxy. That story is much more layered and complex and so is the character work there.
HOWEVER, this is simple but potent and easy to love, and definitely not inferior but it must be awknowledged.

im halfway and MY GOD does he have any redeeming qualities??!! hes a monster. 🥲would’ve made a great dark romance but not like this, not this character.
im at episode 12, they just met, and the tension is everything. i trust ill feel exactly as you say, but now im so sad the potential i see isnt fulfilled
