i said something along the lines of your 'if the actress doesn't do intimate scenes, she shouldn't pick mature…
Honestly, nothing wrong with what you said. AND I do think it's completely ok if the actress doesn't want to do intimate scenes it is her right- but that casting doesn't fit this theme of drama. It's so mature and dark and it didn't make sense for the main leads to act like innocent preteens.
I think she should do more subtle romances or non-romance. dramas I found the same problem with this actress in Faith - where they portrayed only "intimate" scene was her giving CPR and that's not intimate at all! That's a medical emergency!
I think they're trying to do kind of what tvN did except without as many SK connections as CJ Group and without…
"expensive warehouse dramas, ie the leftover scripts with loads of shiny shiny looks and such but lacking in the components to make many of them have long-lasting legacies." - THIS SO MUCH.
They have high production value cause these platforms have $$ and expensive cast but they lack the soul of dramas that the likes of TVN have produced.
All these new platforms trying to quickly suck in the kdrama market are really missing the mark. There are some good Netflix ones but Disney + is really floundering all over the place.
Did they completely forget the ML has a son in the last few eps? like he disappeared....what happened to to his company? and does his backstabbing friend just get away with everything with his scheming ex wife? like.....there were so many filler scenes - could have used up time to answer more interesting subplots.
Honestly as a revenge drama I found this lacking. As a romance drama (honestly what romance?) I found it lacking. As makjang also I found it lacking. It's not the lack of episodes that make this drama fall flat for me. It was the weak script and predictable actions of each character.
The FL is not strong at all and thus as the main character seeking out revenge she fails. She is the epitome of a character who is passive in every situation. She depends on the men around her to save her- so the revenge isn't even satisfying. Tbh she doesn't really do anything herself. She isn't doesn't have a ferocious bone in her body and the script made her come-backs so weak. In contrast the antagonist is what kept me watching. Girl was really relying on her body and brains for the most part. She was definitely rotten to the core but she had more of my respect than the FL. She was so vicious and dramatic it made the drama somewhat worth the 8 eps.
The romance.... man I don't know if they were maintaining covid restrictions filming this for the main couple but I haven't seen that much distance even in PG13 youth dramas. I read below in the comments the actress doesn't do intimate scenes- fair- but she shouldn't pick mature scripts then. It was like they were strangers...and then they were suddenly so in love that the ML can't be without her? How? When? Where?
All in all- you watch this to fill time but it's not as exciting as a revenge drama should be and basically every female except the FL sucks.
Right! Route change! I will take your advice and watch "My Fated Boy". A pity because of the actor Lai Kuan Lin…
Oooo I just looked it up. I think I may pass since I never watch SE dramas. It's just too heartbreaking for me. But I'm glad you are enjoying Fated Boy! I can't remember where I watched it now but the subs were pretty decent and I think it's on YouTube too? The FL is really good in that. She's not perfect like this drama, has her own flaws and is struggling with her own issues but she tries to learn and grow.
Oh also disliked the fact that this drama was 50% business conflict which was also written sooooooo boring. I was falling asleep in their boardroom fights.
At ep 8 and I'm dropping this. I was already not in love with how this was directed and filmed. It's supposed to be mainly a thriller but the director seems to think this is a slow burn? It's too slow paced to be a thriller that can keep you engaged. There are so many slow camera pans and long pauses in dialogue that would have worked if this was just slow burn romance but it's just not that...
But what really annoyed me was how terribly they handled the se*ual assault case. I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for that to be treated more seriously by anyone. The main FL doesn't really, no one else does, and then it just get treated like something that is almost completely normalised. Like...no. Even if you want to show how justice is never served to the elite, how they treat this as nothing, you can't write it in a way that forces the audience to pretend it's not a big deal. It was just a complete disappointment.
IMO 7.6 rating is fair- I gave it a 6 but I dropped it so...
Can't even make it to ep 4. FL is really obnoxious after the 1st ep (which was so promising!) and judging by the rest of the comments it's only downhill from there. How can they make such a weak FL a gang leader....seriously...she's praying on a shooting star in prison instead of strategizing...what kind of gang leader is this ? Even the first episode she was so useless at the bet and we are told that she has the "respect" of all the men in her gang....ok.

Ooo also I didn't know the history behind Lai Kuan Lin. That's interesting. His acting here is decent but needs improvement. Not bad though!
