But FL said a lot of harsh words too. She acted pretentious and arrogant. And she did not have to do that. She does not have any logical reason to be mean and annoying.
Don't forget that: those two people hated each other from the start.

So, people could understand why Shen Du acted this way. In the world of spies he had to fake it. Even for FL's safety.
If Shen Du did not pretend to be mean, FL would have been murdered long ago. (they tried several times to kidnap and murder her)

As for the gifts, this is how it is done usually and it worked. The family accepted the betrothal gifts and married her off again to Shen Du.

This clay cat is very important in my opinion. I think that there is a proof hidden in it; and the master gave it to FL so that those after her could not put their hands on it.
When ML pressed it with his hand, it started to crack like it is hollow.

She did a lot of mistakes. Shen Du told her that LLZ was the mastermind behind all this. And that was it .
She could have found a way to protect the people. ( faking the deaths of people in custody at the imperial inspectorate for instance by drugging them....). But no she left him as a regent. And thus, so much people died.

If it was like in 99% of the dramas where FL is younger and a simp and ML is aloof and older .
I guess there would not be any debate about her being a simp.
But now that a younger ML is head over heels for a older FL, he dated, the war is raging.

You are right FL suffers a lot in this drama. She is resilient and saves the all country but she chooses to let go of ML for being "heartless and blind" (like in her divorce letter).

It completely wacky but so funny. Later on they stop the " I want to strangle you " and the conspiracy solving beggins.

So Shen Du had a secret meeting with the Empress Dowager and told her about his suspicion.
This why the Dowager favored Lai Luo Zhi. They wanted him to show his cards (force him to rebel).
