I didn't read the novel but from what I understood. The royal diviner was Li Shuran's ex lover.
He was not a painter. He had another occupation. They got involved. But she couldnt marry him because her father refused. So, given she could not marry the one she loves.
She decided to marry for power and status. As a result, she approched Mr Jiang on purpose to become his wife.
Once she was married, the great divined was still pursuing her. They became intimate and she was pregnant. At that time Jiang Li was still 6 year old.
Li Shuran needed to abort the baby and get rid of Jiang Li.
This is why she threw herself down the stares and accused Jiang Li of Paricid and fratricide.
She could kill two birds with one stone.

Li Shuran did what her father asked of her. She never rebel.

I don't know how the royal diviner ends in the novel. But I think that He doesn't die. He leaves her and marry someone else.

It seems that their story is more developed in the novel

I love the drama too and I like happy endings, so I always want more happy endings .
But I totally understand why director want their work to be remembered.

My favourite historical Kdrama is "moon lovers : scarlet heart ryeo" and this is a bittersweet endings.

I agree with you. There some tragic elements at the end of the drama.
- The death of Wen Ji and Lu Ji,
- the men on horsebacks after the battle,
- the subjective camera when Xiao Heng gallops toward Xue Fang Fei .

Yes, I agree this is for easthetics . One could think about it as an open ending if we only consider these elements. However, as you stated, and I agree. Showing all that at the end of the drama adds a bittersweet taste to finish the show.
We could say that this leans toward an open ending because, as you said => it leave room for imagination.
This a manipulative strategy writer / director use to add momentum at the end of a movie.
Also, I totally agree with you: Bittersweet / sad ending are more memorable. So I get your point.

Yet, the subjective camera was used several time in the drama . So it does not add a meaning of bitterness or melancholy.
thus, when viewers understood this as a sad horseback scene I disagree.

Nobody can change how viewers feel. I explained the logic of events as they occurred in an historical context. This set the basis of the
characters behaviour.
I cannot discuss viewers taste for open endings. This undeniable.

This is the same plot.

I don't know for Chinese drama but in Korea there are some grievances when ever a drama doesn't follow tropes. So I think it is confortable for those viewers to stick to clichés.
