Bro he jumped from a city gate he is mortal not immortal
1) story narrative does not give him qingqong to glide or float Or 2) he doesn't want to reveal his powers yet

I thought he purposely landed like that and broke his legs because if he didn’t it would reveal he’s a cultivator…
you are a true drama watcher to come up with such a excellent plot point, that actually make a ton more sense that Mei Zhuyu don't want to appear powerful, instead of my rationale that the narrative does not give him qinggong power to glide.
maybe second half of the drama, he shows his power once his identity is known he may exhibit the qinggong of being able to float but not fly. Your point makes his sacrifice even more compelling that he was willing to literally break his legs for her.

the problem is some viewers jump to conclusions and aren't willing to allow the story to unfold. others reading those comments may think this story is full of plot holes and weak narrative

Pei Ji Ya is a plot device to drive our CP closer…it’s nice to see Zhu Zheng Ting in a more grey and villian…
No, that's how he was in the novel, he always wanted to marry Wu Zhen because he was a sickly child and Wu Zhen took care of him, he fell in love with her, but he also a plot for some bad stuff later on. they're really close as cousins and he spent some of his childhood at Wu Mansion.

and how do you know he's "no angel?" No one knows what's he's really like. Why not say he's probably an angel, that is as true as "no angel" since no one knows.

Moonlit Reunion the novel is pure romance; the drama builds it into a complete story with depth, stakes, and world-building, making the story feel complete and multifaceted.

Moonlit Reunion is not Xianxia, not classic Wuxia either, it seems that Mei Zhuyu does not possess qinggong of classic Wuxia heroes to jump down from 40 to 50ft city gate and land perfectly without sustaining injuries. Only in Xianxia immortals and Gods can fly but not in Wuxia. In Wuxia, the classic heroes do possess qinggong that would have allowed them to cushion the fall. This makes Moonlit Reunion a different genre, pure supernatural fantasy with its unique narratives, not xianxia or classic wuxia, that viewers are used to.

Is Mei Zhuyu’s Lack of Qinggong a Plot Hole?
Not a Plot Hole, but a Narrative Choice:
Character Design: Mei Zhuyu’s power lies in talismans and qi manipulation through gestures, not physical feats like qinggong or combat, as the drama shows him standing and motioning to fight demons. In wuxia, cultivators can specialize (e.g., talisman masters vs. swordsmen), so his focus on non-physical skills is consistent, especially in a human-demon realm setting where he’s a mortal, not a xianxia immortal. Lacking qinggong explains why the jump, especially while carrying Wu Zhen caused “seriously wounded” legs, requiring medicated sleep and recuperation, and use of rare herbs to prevent chronic leg problems that would affect his powers of talisman.

Character Consistency: Mei Zhuyu is established as a master of Taoist spiritual arts, not a martial artist trained in physical techniques like qinggong. The drama highlights his talisman-based combat and spell-casting, such as slaying demons with hand motions or aiding others with magic. There’s no indication that he’s trained in martial arts or qinggong, and his sword isn’t shown in use, suggesting his combat style is deliberately non-physical. This aligns with his role as a “demon-slaying master” who relies on magical rather than physical prowess.

Story Purpose: The injury from the one-knee landing serves the plot: it shows his human limits, highlights his sacrifice for Wu Zhen, and sets up her care, deepening their romantic “moonlit reunion” arc.

Wuxia Context: While many wuxia heroes have basic qinggong for jumps (e.g., Legend of the Condor Heroes), it’s not mandatory for all cultivators, especially talisman specialists. His lack of qinggong is plausible for a human scholar-type, unlike acrobatic fighters. The drama’s failure to show him using a talisman to cushion the fall (e.g., a floating charm) makes the injury logical but feel jarring to fans expecting some movement finesse.

Qinggong in Wuxia and Its Relevance. In traditional wuxia, qinggong is a martial arts technique that allows practitioners to perform extraordinary leaps, glide, or move with exceptional agility, often enhanced by internal energy (qi). It’s a hallmark of wuxia heroes, as seen in The Legend of the Condor Heroes, where characters leap great distances or land safely from high falls. In Moonlit Reunion, Wu Zhen’s rooftop chases and cat-like agility suggest she possesses qinggong-like abilities, likely enhanced by her half-demon nature, but not the human Mei Zhuyu, who cultivates spiritual powers.

However, Moonlit Reunion leans more toward supernatural and fantasy elements than pure wuxia, incorporating demons, spiritual powers, and Taoist magic. Mei Zhuyu’s role as a Taoist priest emphasizes spiritual and magical abilities (e.g., talismans, spells) over physical martial arts. While qinggong is common in wuxia, it’s not a mandatory skill for Taoist practitioners in dramas, especially those focused on exorcism or spiritual combat. Historical Taoist priests in Chinese fiction often rely on talismans, rituals, and artifacts rather than physical feats. Thus, Mei Zhuyu’s lack of qinggong isn’t inherently inconsistent with his character as a Taoist prodigy.

okay I'm gonna be that person and say: Why the hell was he passed out from a broken knee/leg for that long???…
Did Mei Zhuyu Pass Out? No, he’s sleeping due to medicine given by the imperial doctor to manage pain from serious leg injuries caused by jumping 40-50 feet from a city gate while carrying Wu Zhen.

In an interview, Xu Kai said "I feel bad for little donkey pulling a big cart. When we’re not filming, I ask the staff to unload the cart and sometimes I feed him some carrot or something... We have a good relationship."

disciple Shuang Jiang looked at Mei Zhuyu confused, how come I don't know, and Mei Zhuyu gave him a disapproving look to remind him of what a poor student he used to be

I'm watching ep 15 and there is more of Mei Zhuyu and there's nothing wrong with his acting to me it's just very nuanced, he expresses in subtlety. The scenes are getting more intense and confrontational for Mei Zhuyu so emoting more. Xu Kai 's posture, walk, body language, he adapted for the character.

That line is so funny. Wu Zhen reminds him she can take care of 10 people in Wu mansion.
The exchange and vibe between Mei Zhuyu and Pei match the novel, I think. Pei and Wu Zhen grew up together. I think Pei was sickly child and Wu Zhen took care of him, so they are very close.

What's the Xu Kai's Scandal I'm clueless 😶‍🌫️I just don't want drama to stop airing cuz I'll literally…
She's an emotionally unstable person imo. she needs help. She's being sued. I think someone put her up to it, if she has financial backing to do this because lawyers are not cheap.

Tbh I also don’t like how they’re showing Mei Zhuyu right now. He’s supposed to be from the Celestial Master…
they're not allies, they're enemies

It's like he's playing the same character again and again and again. I wish he would picked scripts that would…
I don’t see it that way at all. Every character Xu Kai has played brings something distinct to the table—including Mei Zhuyu. Mei is arguably the most emotionally restrained role he’s taken on, yet Xu Kai still manages to embody him with remarkable precision. He looks and feels like Mei from the novel: the stillness, the calm demeanor, the tall, straight posture, the deliberate and measured movements—all of it speaks volumes.

His shy awkwardness around Wu Zhen in the beginning, and later his quiet restraint and reluctance, are beautifully conveyed through subtle expressions and body language. There’s a constant tension in him—uncertainty wrapped in control—that makes their dynamic so compelling.

When he killed the demon in the forest, his ruthlessness came through sharply. And during the fight with those incompetent, comedic bandits, he showed grit and a flicker of dry humor. One scene I especially loved was his deadpan delivery—so perfectly timed that you’re left unsure whether to laugh or just blink in disbelief, that "wait, what?” moment. That kind of nuance takes skill.

I have been quietly watching from ep 1 since Thur. I am posting here because I finally paused at episode 11 and…
this director has very distinctive style. There's a vibe he's going for and even the way the actors act has to match the atmosphere of the scene. Everything is very deliberate. If you're only Ep 11, and you like his style, you're in for a treat. There's a lot more of what you're describing.

Ok so ML is also immortal due to his daoist powers or is he a mortal?
there are no immortals. He's human as far as I know and a powerful daoist (although earlier people made fun of him not able to jump off a building and land pefectly). In the novel, he's most powerful daoist from the temple but he left the temple behind in novel, however, n the drama, he is a still member. The temple in the novel is a peaceful but in the drama, it once tried to kill all demons. He has a sword, and he practices in the novel, but he mainly uses talisman. I don't think he fights like with physical skills - you see him using hand motions. He has no flying powers either, although his qi should be very powerful.
