I didn't felt it here as much as I felt it in Legend of the Female General. But I agree sometimes it feels like…
Most historical dramas are not the more serious traditional you should question but historical fiction but this one is more historical fantasy no need to question it when it’s pure entertainment only. It won’t be this popular if it’s a serious drama.
Yep. They soften his appearance especially in the village scenes for those intended emotional effects between them. It’s what created the allure between the characters. It worked for most viewers.
Just like in The Double and other dramas, this shows that having a strong, well‑acted villain makes the story better. Villains add tension and make everything more interesting. Even old children’s stories use memorable villains to make the story work.
I’m 7 episodes in, but this drama just isn’t hitting for me, despite the high rating you guys give this drama…
I think it was the early episodes that really pulled viewers into the drama. People clearly enjoy the village setting, so the complaints about it are in the minority.
He has lots of romance drama. This is something new for him.
Xu Kai pairs better with older actresses 👍 because he has both youthful charm wrapped in an old soul. He has a way of showing many sides of a character.

The story is addictive not in the scene by scene style of constant hook format but it’s addictive after you’ve filled up with it you find yourself come back to the story again. The story has an intro and setting and builds on the story. There’s so much going on and tens of thousands of years. it has to balance it. Not just keep throwing out addictive scenes. Every scene has meaning and purpose. It’s a storytelling format. Once you grasp what Bai Jue went through for Shangu it s comes together and when you go back to the beginning you can’t help but be amused at Baj jue and later on you can’t help but feel his pain of trying to get her back. You feel this great longing when you watch it. Xu Kai plays two very different characters.

Sword and fairy is sad but ends on a wonderful note. I think it’s a very sweet and lovely story and romance is very charming because neither of them understood but discover feelings naturally. Both leads expanded their range playing these unique characters. Sword and Fairy is about many beautiful relationships not just romantic It’s not just one character or two characters dominating the story. Aren’t most Xu Kai dramas like that. They go beyond romance.
The last I checked Douban user ratings are 160k which is high but not unusually high for a mega popular drama. Based on all the stats I thought it would be 500k by now and go to 1m by end of year. I don’t think it is a true indicator either but usually when it’s a mega hit you expect at least 200k by now. I’m sure it will go to 500k by end of yr due to hype meaning everyone is talking about it. But I would expect a 1m based on all the talk.
I still don’t get why MDL currently watching is still above the completed for the highest rated drama. . Did all the 10 ‘s still not converted to completed.
I’m really impressed by Lin Mu Ran’s performance. I don’t know his past roles or what his future roles will be like nor do I know anything about him but his character is so memorable to me. The leads I already expected a good performance and both expanded their range especially Tian Xi Wei. Somehow his villain character was more fun to watch while the other villain played well but more what you’d expect of toxic and depressing characters. And Lin Mu Ran did it not as a main character and with less story and screen time so it left you less taxing. Of all the characters aside from the energetic Tian Xi Wei (in real life too maybe more)he brought the most youthful energy. I think that’s what made his character stood out for me.
After finishing the drama, i had to come out of my 6 months of retirement from MDL just to make this comment.…
Even the characters both the good guys and bad guys in the drama were amazed at her skills but that was part of the humor and charm of the drama. The irony was that the characters themselves would repeatedly say only in storybooks does it happen also part of the humor and charm. Don’t take it seriously.
Indeed, I agree. It was an excellent series... but I also felt that the political plot was underwhelming or it…
I think the director is not just hands on but dominating and controlling in every aspect and detail he is the one creating and moderating the emotional impacts through all kinds creative techniques and methods. He obviously has a different kind of background and experience he brings to long form which makes his dramas stand out similar to the director of the The Double but the director of The Double I feel is different from the crowd in that his creativity is more classic art and this director of Pursuit of Jade is different from the crowd in that his creativity is more artsy in flashy way and both try to made scenes addictive to viewers. The director of The Double is hands on but also allow more free rein than this director
