Another Xu Kai drama I think I will left midway. I left Midnight Returns halfway as there were barely any Xu Kai…
Why do I feel like you part of some outsourced digital PR team echoing preset narratives? The way you said it sounds like you copy/paste from a press release, "As for confirmed rumours he will also has less screen time here as well."
His two new dramas that he shoot and finished last year will be different type of drama. One is call fi and the…
xu kai's agency has history of collaborations with zhou ye's agency so that may explain how they end up with these roles. I saw a video clip of yz bragging that's how he got xk for sel and wxy for scent of time.
Xu Kai might not be in every single episode, but his character’s emotional arc always finds its way to the heart…
Han Ting was #1 character on Vlinkage for long time, then stayed on Vlinkage top 20 list for 60 consecutive days in summer of 2024. What "supporting" character does that?
Xu kai is like supporting character to fl in most of his recent dramas
Xu Kai might not be in every single episode, but his character’s emotional arc always finds its way to the heart of the story. The way he plays it makes the whole narrative feel like it revolves around him. His performance lifts everything, and he leaves an emotional imprint that stays with you long after the story ends.
The high level of Qinggong has something to do with martial arts ability, did not necessarily relate to the Changxi…
City guards, imperial soldiers, and common folk typically don't possess the extraordinary abilities seen in martial heroes. Taoism is one of the major influences on wuxia where martial artists cultivate internal energy—qi—that allows them to "perform gravity-defying leaps and swift movements (often called qinggong). They’re not gods or immortals, but their mastery of qi gives them a kind of superhuman flair." Mei Zhu Yu was hiding his powers that even I doubted the presence of wuxia in this drama, until I saw him do that.
They used the word scandal immediately as soon as someone makes false claims to make people think there is an actual scandal because everyone loves gossip and ran with that word, but there never was. It was designed to destroy his reputation and timed for premier of Moonlit Reunion. Other actors have false accusations, and no one calls them scandals, except Xu Kai. It's not the first time they weaponized the word scandal on Xu Kai, it's just the loudest one. It probably won't be the last if he continues to be successful. It's baffling why him.
XU Kai needs to do drama like Wonderland of love minus Obsessive SML where he is the center of the story.
In Wonderland of Love, he had many great scenes where he showed his acting prowess. The drama did well and is still sitting at 6.9 on Douban, but there’s just no hype around it. In every Xu Kai drama, you’ll find really fine acting from him. His dramas may be underrated, and he’s underrated too (no hype), but he's a gem. A challenge is the structure of many costume dramas, where characters are reduced to just standing there and saying a few lines. But in scenes where he has to truly interact with another character—whether there’s dialogue or not—his acting shines. He thrives in roles that give him meaningful dialogue and emotional depth. Unfortunately, many of his dramas give him limited screen time and not enough lines. Yet the way he portrays his characters with such detail, precision, and depth—even if you cut his scenes or lines—the character still ends up being the most memorable one in the whole series.
Another drama he gave outstanding performance, but few mention, is SAF6. He showed such finesse in playing Bian Luo Huan. His performance was quiet but powerful, and it really deserves more recognition since he played two different characters in the same time period with such precision. There are a quiet, soul-stirring melancholy and longing in Bian Luo Huan—it’s the kind of emotional texture that doesn’t scream for attention but lingers long after the scene ends. Xu Kai really does have the ability to breathe life into his characters, making each one unique.
People say, “Oh, he has great resources,” but I don’t think so. His dramas where he is the male lead aren’t big productions with huge fanfare, or famous directors known for past hits. They’re not the kind of dramas that everyone’s talking about before filming, during filming, after filming, and even after airing.
There is no hype around Xu Kai or his dramas, yet he continues to quietly shine. In all his dramas, his natural brilliance is evident to me, because I look for it.
The Changxi Sword responds to spiritual resonance, with Mei Zhuyu as its master. It recognizes Wu Zhen because her destiny is intertwined with his. The sword belongs to Mei Zhuyu’s destiny, not to Changxi Palace. Wu Zhen is an essential part of that destiny. The moment the sword recognized her and allowed her to wield it foreshadowed the completion of their shared path — a destiny neither could fulfill alone.
Just started this but the CGI bothers me. It's not terrible and I'm usually not one to pay too much attention…
I thought the CGI was great, but I don't watch much fantasy, so I'm no expert. Maybe if the demons and special effects don't feel real or frightening to you, it's because Moonlit Reunion has a lighthearted, fun, magical vibe. The demons and special effects aren't supposed to look super real or scary—they're just there to add a bit of fantasy and help tell the story in a charming way. For me, I thought Evil Infant looked like a fiendish scary monster. I think MR is just not your kind of monsters.
While it is fine to be satisfied with the ending we got-the parts that were left in left something to be desired.…
I was waiting too for Mei Zhu Yu to appear, but setting aside my own interests, I think the ending is interesting, who would have imagined it. A lot of dramas the ending is mostly predictable, this one just took imagination to another level, because it is fantasy. (It's like watching Star Wars to only find out later, that's really his biological sister.) Who would have thought the demon chaser is a demon himself.
I hope Xu Kai can have more screen time, no not just screen time, I really like his interactions with older characters who are also really good actors. That's why my top pick to watch Xu Kai for 2025 has always been 800-meter radius.
Some speculate that his memory of his father was sealed, but another possibility is that the man he encountered in the past does not look like his father for whatever reasons. Perhaps in the Great fire, he became unrecognizable, he had some sort of demon marking on his forehead too. His mother is human, so her form never changes. I don't recall if earlier episodes showed his parents at all, I don't think they ever showed any pictures of them. Since demons can change form, and he had been fighting to his death, that his form became unrecognizable to Mei Zhu Yu.
who is stronger? full-demon Wu Zhen or Mei Zhu Yu?
they both became full demons, but MZY should be stronger because he was the strongest Taoist now combined with Zhu Yu demonic power and the cat clan blood. WZ possessed the former Cat Master's power and became a full demon once the evil infant was removed from her, but MZY has the power of the Zhu Yu plant that his father cultivated, that plant has more than just the former Cat Master's power, it's got some kind of special mystical powers of its own. The plant turned from green to purple when he woke up a demon. I assume he is also cat demon?
In a scene where WZ still under memory loss was trying to cultivate Taoist power, MZY explained to her that Taoist powers and demonic powers are mutually exclusive and cannot be merged. If anyone can merge the two, they would become the most powerful being, which is what happed to MZY. That line was foreshadowing him.
Interviewer: Have you noticed that many of your characters have a bathing scene? Xu Kai: I hate this part the most. Interviewer: Why? Xu Kai: Perhaps we ourselves don't quite get it. I'm just sitting there soaking all day, just so you all can see me for a moment. In Moonlit Reunion, I was soaking in the tub for so long that I almost got heatstroke. If you look closely, you can see my beard is starting to show. My makeup has long washed off, and I've been soaking so long that even my wig cap has come loose. I told the director, "If we don't finish shooting this scene soon, I'm going to start floating." I wasn't as handsome as you see on screen, just bowing my head there, deep in thought. Han Ting was in (soaked in) cold water, right? I was about to break down. Interviewer: So before filming, do you quickly work out to get your body in shape? Xu Kai: I was swollen from soaking so long. Do I even need to work out? (my skin/body) has become all pruny from soaking for so long.

Is Moonlit Reunion the least screen time of his career? Did it beat out Court Lady?
