the mystery is revealed at the end of the drama that mzy is half demon (mother is human, father is demon) but with bloodline of cat clan like his full demon father, unlike wz who was half demon with no bloodline to cat clan, she's not born a demon but given demonic powers by former Cat Master so she turned demon. The true heir to Cat Lord is really mzy. wz eventually becomes full demon because of what mzy did.
Why only Mei Zhu Yu and Wu Zhen can wield the Changxi Sword goes back to 18 yrs ago with the Cat Master. When she was able to wield it in front of Mei Zhu Yu, it shocked him. But that was foreshadowing that their destiny and fate are intertwined.
I wouldn’t call it a rushed ending—it was a compressed one. They had to cut two episodes, which meant some details and character moments got squeezed out. The core plot still had foreshadowing and structure, but the emotional depth probably took a hit. It was still emotional. The actors delivered the emotions well. I actually like the ending very much from a storyline perspective. It is fantasy after all.
Thanks for the heads up. I cannot stand simp mls who give everything up for love. Will keep looking for my next…
Mei Zhu Yu gave up his life to save the mortal realm. He took back his fate and destiny, it was designed for him, not her. She just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time.
It's not anything out of the ordinary, and 8.0 is okay for this drama... I'm not sure why they chose to do it…
It’s called the Zhu Yu plant (as in Mei Zhu Yu), cultivated by his father. The plant contains mystical energy passed down from his father, a former Cat Master. Because Mei Zhu Yu trained in Taoist arts from a young age, his body and spirit became attuned to spiritual forces, making him compatible with the plant’s power. Taoist cultivation of qi (life force) allows the plant to respond to him; without that training, he wouldn’t have had the strength or refinement to survive its transformation or absorb its energy.
The plant isn’t just magical—it’s part of his lineage. Taoist training prepared him to bridge his human identity with the supernatural legacy he inherited. When the plant saves him, it doesn’t merely heal—it awakens dormant demon powers. His Taoist discipline helps him resist losing control and instead channel those powers into becoming the Cat Lord. Without that foundation, the transformation could have consumed him.
The Zhu Yu plant activates not because of Taoist cultivation, but because of his inherited demonic bloodline. His transformation isn’t random—it’s the awakening of what was already within him. Mei Zhu Yu’s Taoist training had suppressed these powers, which is why he believed Taoist and demonic energy were incompatible. He’s caught between two forces traditionally seen as mutually exclusive: Taoist purity and demonic chaos. Yet through his unique bloodline and the Zhu Yu plant’s awakening, he ends up embodying both. Mei Zhu Yu told Wu Zhen when she tried to cultivate Taoist powers, that mastering both makes one the most powerful being—and that’s exactly what Mei Zhu Yu became. That must have been foreshadowing.
Wu Zhen didn’t need to cultivate qi because her powers weren’t dormant or inherited—they were directly transferred to her by the Cat Lord. Mei Zhu Yu had latent powers tied to his bloodline, but they were suppressed by his Taoist training. Wu Zhen, on the other hand, received her powers as a gift, not through cultivation. That's why Rat Demon who has been cultivating for thousands of years refused to believe she can be more powerful than him in just 18 years.
Mei Zhu Yu’s father never told him about his demonic powers, and his Taoist training suppressed these powers due to their incompatibility with demonic cultivation,
Xu Kai may have less screen time, but he delivered, like usual! He's got such a strong screen presence not many…
The emotional depth he brings to his characters elevates the entire narrative, turning fleeting scenes into unforgettable moments. That’s exactly how he shot to fame with his breakout role in Story of Yanxi Palace despite limited appearances across the drama’s 70 episodes. No one has ever done that, no experience, no professional background, first real role, not leading role, at age 22. The actor who turned down the role didn’t think a bald-headed imperial guard with limited screen time was worth it. Had he not stepped aside, the opportunity for a star to be born might never have come.
Mei Zhu Yu is a popular character. I see all kinds of rankings, it's usually #1. There is a Huanwang Big Data Daily Ranking I never heard of it, but it's #1 on there too.

I notice these things because I watch Xu Kai dramas for his nuances. I like his acting style very much. when they give him emotional scenes that last more than a few seconds, his face explodes with emotions, not exaggerated gestures but deep emotions across his face, body, esp, those eyes. and I don't mean crying scenes, just scenes that involve emotions.

I wish they had done a super close-up, but they didn’t. Still, Xu Kai had this fiendish look — not overacted, just quietly sinister. He wasn’t playing evil; he simply exuded that eerie vibe. When he said, “Madam, you must be reluctant to part with me,” it sent chills.
In Ep. 38, brief as it was, Xu Kai got to play a villain scene; he really did. He had an evil eye and sinister look. Too bad he didn't get more time as the villain.
