I enjoyed the first 1 hour and 20 minutes of the movie, but after that, it started to go downhill. The ending felt flat, with some elements rushed or forced.
If only the story had involved some character growth, I'd have given this show a 6 or higher. Instead I seriously…
I think this movie is a tragedy about a woman who frees herself from her immature and controlling boyfriend, then finally changes her life for the better.
Unfortunately, people tend to forget the bad things and remember only the good. And so, she forgets what was wrong and starts to believe that leaving him was a mistake.
He, on the other hand, is so immature that he enters a new relationship without truly ending the one he just left - let alone reflecting on why it ended.
Actually, both of them are immature, as they get back together even though the ML is still in a relationship with someone else (so yes, he cheats on his new girlfriend). It seems their way of solving problems isn’t through communication and working things out, but by having sex and avoiding meaningful conversations.
Then, they have a conversation about... how the ML is suffering and how he needs time to heal so that... he can love her again. At that moment, I thought, "WTF?!" and felt like I was watching a melodramatic thriller. All of this happens despite their friends clearly explaining to him why the relationship had ended in the first place.
So yeah, by the end, they end up together again - and there's no sign that either of them has grown at all 😑
If only the story had involved some character growth, I'd have given this show a 6 or higher. Instead I seriously considered rating this show a 1 for promoting toxic relationships, and here's why:
I only understood it after watching for the second time, may years later.
Maybe I will get back to it someday if I happen to read "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" or watch some more movies about it.
On the other hand I must admit I'm not a fan of the step printing technique that Wong Kar Wai uses in his movies - feels like being drunk without being drunk 😉
It's a story about a girl’s journey to get a new wok pan 😉
But seriously, this film explores themes like the dark side of constantly striving for more (in many aspects, not just food) and the contrast between rich and poor. Just don’t watch it on an empty stomach.
Aokbab Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying won an Emmy for her role in this movie. She expressed so much just through her facial expressions and gaze. It felt slightly overdone at times for my taste, but it still worked well overall.
