Y’all, I’m on episode 5. I’m enjoying it so far but do the parents get irritating, and cagey, and do the thing where they force a separation with a timeskip? Are there big eye-rolling misunderstandings? Is there unneeded or undeserved apologies? I'll still watch but I've had to watch some shows from end-to-start because the misunderstandings made me very very annoyed. The love for this show is infectious but what about the experience, y'know?
Some parts of the movie did make me uncomfortable (like intense gazes and accidentally falling on top of each other cliches), yet, given the actors are both adults in real life, and there’s just the "touching of lips" and no “real kissing” I just let myself stay in a suspension of disbelief.
Or maybe I’m a little desensitized given I watched the 90s version and 2000s version of “Kou Kou Kyoushi” which was pretty gross, and this (G&HGD) barely non-existent-ly scratched the service.
Sure, the power imbalance is different/same: charge/bodyguard and student/teacher, but like??? It just hits different and G&HGD is pretty tame in comparison and less mind-damaging.
That’s shallow and honestly kind of gross. Synthwave’s always been an earworm for me, but I get that people have different tastes. Still, I’m fine with changes. I’m just a big synthwave fan. I guess it’d feel a little odd if they tried to lean into a Drive-style soundtrack with some rap mixed in.
I figured. But for some reason, I just don’t think they’ll keep it synthwave; then again, they could do something similar to D.P.’s soundtrack. Or I would be okay with something R&B-like from the producer/rapper Gray. But this is where I must refrain and just sit and wait. This is what I must realize.
Show not tell is what makes good cinema. It is suppose to be brutal, showing that you lost everything including…
There are definitely other ways to bring that point home. The story is dark, sure, but if the revenge isn’t done right in spite of the anticipated “payoff”…it just pushes people away. And I’ll stand by it. There’s no need to go that route at all. It can be done. End of story.
Oh and I seriously wish they’d kept that synthwave soundtrack vibe. It just hit different. Still, the show looks promising and I’m hoping they keep at least a few of those motifs. The rotten tree motif and that synthwave score aren’t just harmless, they’re part of what made the original feel so striking, and they’d slide perfectly into the series. It’s such a nice touch. But honestly, I’m cool with changes. I don’t mind if it’s not exactly like the movie. Just me thinking out loud.
