is the fight with zombie going to be the center of the story? I had a hard time watching this because I'm just not really into zombie trope (never ending seasons of walking dead did that to you lol), but at the same time I really want to watch the pairing more

By helping out Manniang, it means that GTY took her in as a concubine, then they have children (notice how they have 2 children, the first one a girl and the second one a boy, which means Manniang has planned to swindle her way to become a concubine in Marquis's house)
On the first and second arc of the drama, the female lead and GTY interacted very minimal. She didn't see him as potential partner.
SPOILER ALERT: that's GTY's character arc! when he was heart and brain riddled with Manniang, he agreed to find a proper wife to save face (as that was the conduct at that time). Later on he would realize his mistake and changed his ways.
as why GTY is a loved character, probably because he fits the anti-hero trope so much.

this is my 3rd or 4th drama too and I'm not sure if it's just me but I feel like the male leads style in jdramas are outdated if compared to cdramas or kdramas. idk maybe it's just the preference of japanese audience.
