Are you referring to the Emperor or Second Prince? The Emperor makes it quite obvious that he knew from the start but it is uncertain for the Second Prince (I don't want to say much because this is a spoiler)

HOB is super long but the story itself is a bit more similar to MDZS than SVSSS is to MDZS. I think most people would agree that MDZS is overall the best (probs mainly because WangXian is her best couple). But in terms of writing and story, HOB is definitely written more sophisticatedly and I personally found the story more complex than MDZS.

My theory is that Chen Ping Ping is Fan Xian's biggest supporter but Fan Xian does not realize that yet and by contrast (I agree with what you're saying) he sees him as an enemy because he is indeed very manipulative and Fan Xian does not like being manipulated (although he loves manipulating everyone himself lol).
I get what you're saying about Yan Bingyun now and I do agree that that is how he is behaving now but I would like to believe (as I said earlier) that he will eventually waver a bit.
