To me, every character is realistic, whether good or bad, or grey. The choices they made, depending on the circumtances, whether due to upbringing, culture , belief or life and death situation, during that era .
All actors/actresses did very well in portraying their characters.

Hope to watch Ding Yuxi in another chatacter soon.
Hope to watch Fan Shi Ran as female lead too. I think she has potential. 😊

About Mo Yi, from the drama itself, this is what I understand.

Previously, to obtain legal salt grants from the goverment, the merchants have to sent grains to the Northwest, then only they would receive grants for salt.

The change Grains-Salt system to Silver-Salt system, benefit the Anzhao (their base location is far from the North) merchants the most. They save money for transportation, no more hassle.

Even with the Grains-Salt system, the Northwest has already faced insufficient grains supply, Mo Yi, as a Northwest person, worried that Silver-Salt system would further drain the granaries for the army , opposed the new system.

With that situation, Mo Yi seemed to have a motif to kill Mdm Wu, the Head of Anzhao mechants. By giving 'justice' to Anzhao merchants, indirectly cut off the obtacle from the Northwest, and smoothen the new salt system transition. The Imperial treasury was filled up quick. Emperor wanted silver asap.

Why did the Emperor ask Zhao Ling, a Northwest army to execute Mo Yi, his fellow Northwest army?

Mo Yi's death indirecly served the Emperor to have absolete control of Zhao Ling. First, to show to the court that Zhao Ling was not his favor, but his blade. Second, to isolate Zhao Ling, to lose Northwest support, so that Zhao Ling has only him to rely on.
