I think, SML is lack of moral compass, just a little bit. He is smart, but uses it for his own gain, including FL. If only he were to use it for the good of the people, he might have a chance with FL.
For ex , he increased the price for materials bought by the Governer's place, knowing that the officials didn't care about the price, as they were not spending their money. To him, it's just business.
He increased the fee for overnight stay at his inn during the examination week, to get a higher profit from the outside scholars. To him, it's just business.
He sent gangsters to hurt the scholars staying for free at Governer's inn (operating secretly), to interrupt Governer's plan in recruiting commoners as officials. But, he warned his people not to hurt only FL. If the governer's plan fail, it will upset FL, then he will have a higher chance with FL.
In other words, he doesn't think much about other people. At this point, he'll do almost anything to win FL. I just hope he doesn't cross the line.
Overall, I think this show doesn't have 'evil' villians, just villian-ish people scheming to win, to uphold their principles.
SML's grandfather sent assasins to kidnap/kill FL, because he thought FL was a bad influence to ML, but since FL is still alive, I'd say he is still villian-ish.
At Epi 4 : I'm a bit confused. FL's master asked her to go to Chufeng Academy to find her senior brother. At the academy, she find ways to be stronger. Her trying to be stronger has nothing to do with searching for senior brother, right? She just wants to be stronger. Btw, I think the 1000 year old 9 tail fox is her master. 😉

Her memory before that , including the revenge which took root 8 years ago , is intact.

Just my opinion. Her acting was not bad before, but her performance in VOS is impressive. She acted a witty role before, similiar to her role here. The difference is, it's more natural now, and I mean it in a good way. She improved a lot.👍🏼
Most actresses (...and actors) gradually gets better from experience, and I believe, so does she. Be rooting for her. 🤩
