Similar vibes, similar melancholic feel, the mind numbing feel of commuting and surviving. It’s by the same writer for both and these are both very slow, character focused dramas. There’s an undercurrent of sadness throughout both even with all of the humour and such.

Both movies are about letters for reason. One for love, one for hope. Both are really heart warming movie. Peaceful, organic, small town scenes.

Both are about postman. Mountain village vibe. Human kindness, mailing for many reason. Tradition move on.

The Story of Xing Fu is partially adapted from Chen Yuanbin's novella The Wan Family's Lawsuit (????) which was also made into a movie in 1992, The Story of Qiu Ju, directed by the acclaimed Zhang Yimou and acted by the gorgeous Gong Li. The earlier story was set around the 1980s when rural life was harsh, and the country’s economic miracle was still at its infancy.
The Story of Xing Fu is set in the late 2010s, and viewers can see the marked improvement of village life compared to the 80s, but the rural-urban divide is stark.

A love story between a young man who has been forced to grow up too quickly, and a young woman with an ailment that has placed restrictions on her life. Natsuo has been looking after his younger brother and sister since the death of their parents. He has also been running the family bicycle shop. Yuki becomes the only person in the world in whom he can confide. For Yuki, Natsuo becomes the catalyst that has her trying to break out of her cocoon.

Minato is a university student and has a fear of germs. She isn't interested in looking pretty. She lives with her stepbrother Toru, who is her stepbrother from her mother's remarriage. Meanwhile, Toru is handsome and a player with the ladies. He doesn't resist women who come on to him and he doesn't stop women from leaving him either. Minato is uncomfortable with Toru and his ways with women. They are the same age and attend the same university. They have an agreement, where Toru will not approach Minato within 2 meters when they are outside. One day, due to her friend’s request, Minato puts on make-up and wears her friend’s high school uniform. While she is out walking in public, she happens to meet Toru. She unexpectedly lies to him about her identity and tells him that she is a high school student. Toru falls in love with her at first sight.
