Slow & confusing but got better

First couple of episodes were great but a bit slow. Then a couple of plot holes made it confusing. However, it got better and very emotional, but ending was a bit luke warm.
It really needed another episode to wrap up some loose ends, or better yet, a second season to explore the main characters reuniting, and secondary characters lives that have been altered.
I think this is mainly due to Korean BLs still trying to find their legs in this genre. Most BL actors are new to the genre, directors are trying too hard to please everyone (studio heads and audience), and many times the story suffers. They need to learn from Thai, China, and Japan regarding how to create better productions, more involved character development, while keeping high-level quality and storytelling.
Overall, worth watching but probably won't watch again; which is rare for me, since I often rewatch BLs.

a clown for the 2nd ML

my first kdrama that i tuned in in real time and watched as soon as episodes are released during pandemic time. i tried with some kdrama series like the king but could only go as far as 3 eps tops..then got bored already or for me, story becomes predictable, or that's just me..

this feels like a subvert to the typical childhood/first love and ceo-trope romances, but deng it hurts esp when im supposed to root for my fave NJH (who is so good in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo) or at least his character Do San but i became a clown for Mr. Write Han Jipyeong 🤡

P.S. the OST is the best!! the upbeats songs esp Future and the ballads really are scenestealers!!

A Fusion Sageuk-Makjang Held Together by Vibes, Not Writing

The biggest issue with My Royal Nemesis is not that it tries and fails, but that the writing never seems fully convinced of what story it actually wants to tell. The premise suggests a tight, character-driven fusion sageuk with clear emotional stakes between its leads, but the execution constantly dilutes that potential with inconsistent tone and direction. Scenes are written as isolated moments rather than parts of a cohesive narrative, so instead of building momentum, the story repeatedly resets itself. You’re left with the feeling that the drama is improvising its plot one episode at a time.

The structural writing is particularly weak when it comes to cause and effect. Major events often happen because the script needs to move forward, not because they logically emerge from character decisions or prior setup. Conflicts are introduced with urgency but resolved with surprising ease, sometimes off-screen or with minimal emotional fallout. This creates a lack of narrative consequence, nothing really sticks, so nothing truly matters. Compared to a tightly written drama like Mr. Queen, where even comedic chaos feeds into long-term story progression, My Royal Nemesis feels like it’s constantly breaking its own internal logic just to keep episodes moving.

Character writing suffers from the same inconsistency. The leads are not given stable emotional arcs; instead, their personalities and motivations fluctuate depending on what the plot requires in the moment. One episode may frame them as ideological opposites, the next as soft allies, and the next as romantically aligned without sufficient bridging development. This makes their dynamic feel manufactured rather than organically evolving. Even key emotional beats land flat because the groundwork simply isn’t there...there’s no gradual accumulation of tension or trust, just abrupt shifts the script expects the audience to accept.

Dialogue writing also contributes to the overall weakness. Conversations often state emotions directly instead of letting them emerge through subtext or action. Characters frequently verbalize their internal state in a way that feels expository rather than natural, which strips scenes of nuance. Instead of letting silence, reaction, or conflict carry meaning, the writing over-explains, leaving little room for interpretation or emotional depth. This is especially noticeable in romantic scenes, where chemistry should be built through restraint and tension but instead is handed to the viewer through overly explicit dialogue cues.

Ultimately, the writing lacks cohesion, restraint, and long-term planning. It introduces interesting ideas: political tension, rivalry, emotional conflict, but rarely develops them beyond surface level before shifting focus again. As a result, the drama feels structurally fragile, held together more by genre familiarity than actual narrative strength. When compared to Mr. Queen, which demonstrates how disciplined writing can balance comedy, satire, and emotional depth without losing coherence, My Royal Nemesis comes across as a far less confident and far less controlled version of the same concept, one that never fully commits to its own story long enough to make it memorable.

A Fresh Concept, Good Story, and Acting, but Missing That Extra Spark

This is a good drama with a solidly written story, but for me, it is missing the spark and pace required to make it a great drama.

The Story
Hu Xiu (Lu Yu Xiao) is working a job that is far from ideal while trying to achieve her dream of becoming an architect. To make matters worse, she’s right on the verge of getting married when her fiancé suddenly dumps her through a voice message. To cheer her up, her best friend, Zhao Xiao Rou, drags her to a murder mystery game club. That's where she runs into Xiao Zhi Yu (Chen Xing Xu), who causes her to lose the game.

Determined to win next time, Hu Xiu repeatedly returns to the club. Eventually, she runs into Xiao Zhi Yu in real life. Xiao Zhi Yu works hard to keep his private life private and tries his best not to get entangled with Hu Xiu. However, events keep throwing them together, and they grow closer—especially after he starts renting her attic.

As things progress, you find out about Xiao Zhi Yu's past and why he keeps everyone at arm's length, even though he can't help being drawn to her. His past, a third party who starts showing interest in Hu Xiu, and Xiao Zhi Yu's own family all complicate their connection.

What I Liked
- The Concept: The way the story bounces between real life and the murder mystery games feels super fresh and different.
- The Character Growth: In the second half of the show, you finally get to see a really sweet connection between them. The actor actually gets to smile more as his character starts opening up to her.
- The Performances: The acting is pretty good, and both leads follow their character outlines well. (I haven't read the web novel Ga Xi by Zu Le, so I can't say how faithful it is to the source material).
- The Visuals: The cinematography is lovely, especially the visuals within the murder mystery game.
- The Soundtrack: The music complements the drama well.
- The Friendships: I really enjoyed the relationship between Hu Xiu and her best friend, Zhao Xiao Rou.
- The Supporting Cast: Dai Xu, the actor playing Pei Zhen, does a fantastic job. He plays the role well and brings a lively energy to the screen. I would love to see him in other dramas.
- The Ending: I actually liked that the ending wasn't a standard wedding or engagement ring scene, because those can become repetitive and boring since so many shows do them. I really liked that the writers added the kitten as their family of three instead.

What I Didn't Like
- The Chemistry: I missed the spark that would have made the connection between Xiao Zhi Yu and Hu Xiu truly great. They have a sweet chemistry, but that intense, "hormones out of control" attraction you expect when someone is deeply in love just isn't felt here.
- The Romance: I know Chinese dramas are usually conservative and light on intimate scenes, but this one left me wanting more.
- The Pace: The show drags a bit and moves too slowly.
- The Hook: It took me a handful of episodes to actually get into it, which is unusual for me because I normally get sucked into a drama right from episode one.
- Rewatch Value: There’s zero rewatch value for me here, which is usually the ultimate test of whether I truly loved a drama.

The Verdict
Who should watch it: People who love unique game concepts, heavy family mystery subplots, and realistic, career-focused endings.
Who shouldn't watch it: Viewers looking for intense romantic chemistry, fast pacing, or high rewatch value.

Rir ou chorar, eis a grande questão!

Meu primeiro drama com o Cha eunwoo e eu simplesmente amei! É uma comédia que mistura suspense, ação e até mesmo um pouco de drama, as vezes é um pouco sombria, mas também tem um humor incrível. Os protagonistas são bem construídos e cada um deles tem suas questões pessoais desenvolvidas durante a série, fazendo a gente entender bem cada um deles. Um romance acontece entre a Eouni e o personagem do Eunwoo, mas é feito de uma forma muito suave, mas ainda está na cara que os dois estão se apaixonado. Me deixou chocada as pessoas pensarem que ele gostava da outra que nem teve cena direito com ele?? Mas deixando isso de lado, o dorama é otimo e as cenas de ação também são incríveis com uma ótima escolha de músicas na trilha sonora.

Painfully Average

I think this drama perfectly represents the current problem with mythical creature romance kdramas: the genre has become too familiar to feel exciting anymore.

That is not entirely this show’s fault. I genuinely love mythical creature romances, which is probably why I still enjoyed parts of it despite all my criticisms. But after so many fox-spirit, immortal, and fate-bound love stories, newer dramas struggle to bring anything fresh to the table. Earlier dramas in this genre felt magical because the concepts still felt novel. Now it often feels like we are watching recycled versions of the same story. There are enjoyable moments here and there, but overall, nothing about this drama feels particularly unique.

I think fantasy romances could use a bit of a breather. I’d love to see more focus on world-building, lore, and supernatural drama instead, something closer to Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938, where the mythology and storytelling actually take centre stage.

The biggest issue with No Tail to Tell is the romance itself. The leads work fine individually, but together they have almost no chemistry. Their dynamic felt more sibling-like than romantic, and the script gives them very little material to build believable emotional tension. Visually they look like a pairing that should work, but on screen there is just nothing there. It feels like dramas nowadays cast actors who look good together rather than actors who actually fit together.

Kim Hye Yoon once again carries most of the emotional weight of the drama. At this point, she seems cursed to do all the heavy lifting while the male leads coast on visuals alone.

The writing also frustrated me, particularly with how heavily the female lead’s growth revolved around the male lead. The “he made her a better person” trope feels outdated. That is why I was disappointed with how the drama handled the sister relationship. It would have been far more interesting if the relationship that once contributed to her moral decline became the thing that guided her healing and redemption in the present. There was real potential to explore guilt, forgiveness, and emotional recovery through platonic love instead of centring everything around romance again.

The pacing did not help either. The first half dragged badly with too many filler scenes, then the story finally became interesting around episode 8 only to rush through major developments near the end.

Overall, this is still a decent watch if you already enjoy mythical creature romances because the genre itself remains entertaining enough to carry weaker stories. I was never completely bored, but it is ultimately a very forgettable drama in a genre that should feel far more captivating than this.

My 2026 highlight is complete with this drama

This drama is the light of my life when i never knew i needed it. ,😍🥲 my main reason of watching this, mainly for Imjiyeon but ended up loving both Namjun and Jiyeon caught my feeling/ heart by being themselves in this drama. One thing i noticed that they really showcased their talents to the maximum level of satisfaction
.it's not just about their clear enunciation,it's that all the stresses, intonations, lengths, and rhythms are perfectly timed. They emphasized what needs to be emphasized, relaxed where it's needed, and adjusts their pace—fast or slow—as required. Every word is delivered with emotion, and this becomes even more apparent in scenes with dense dialogue. The faster they speak, the clearer they get, and combined with Namjun's unique voice, his line delivery is truly his greatest asset as an actor. Many actors, even those with good acting skills, fall short in their diction and tone, which can sometimes hinder immersion.🥰😭😭

Ignore the complaints, the reason some people criticized episodes 11 and 12 is because they wanted the show to be all sweet... They criticize anything that's even slightly angsty. These two episodes really tested the actors' acting skills in portraying the emotional progression and conflict between the male and female leads, and they did a fantastic job, making the audience's emotions very strong.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Nothing compares to this until i said so and many have said so too😂its hard to move on.

Quiet, charming short series about finding yourself in the sea

I've seen other films or shows involving free-divers (ama or haenyeo), but Azure Spring features diving more centrally, with plenty of underwater footage where it's clear the main cast are diving.

Another selling point for me is that there's also lots of footage of food preparation, including gathering seafood, vegetables from a community garden, etc. and cooking in a traditional pot.

I really like the calm, poetic tone of the series, which has a deep undercurrent of melancholy and darkness but doesn't sink into it. Instead it floats near the surface, hopeful, poignant, and gently funny.

The characters are sufficiently compelling and likable. And I like that it's only 6 30-minute episodes, which felt perfect.

Really my only complaint is a CGI cat inserted needlessly into various shots. It's technically well rendered but the stiff animations are distracting and it really doesn't add anything, so it's hard to understand why they spent money and effort on it.

Don't pay attention to the negative reviews, and give this a try !

I don't often write reviews but I feel like this drama receives a ton of criticism and I honestly don't understand why.
The acting, the production, the storyline, it is honestly a banger and while I was a bit confused at the beginning, after episode 3 or 4 I was ALL in.
The plot isn't complicated, you just have to pay attention and maybe we are all getting a bit too used to very straightforward plots without any twists but I really enjoyed Rebirth because it was non linear and full of surprises. There were a lot of characters and storylines but I really liked that, it was never boring! Often I feel like 40 episodes drama have filler episodes but it's not the case at all, in fact I wished some of the latter episodes were a bit longer because there was definitely other things to explore (I'm going to keep the review spoiler-free but I wanted more information on the different kingdoms after the big battle).
I loved Lin Yunrui's interpretation of Zhuge Yue, he was restrained but emoting so well at the same time that even with a slight change of expression, we could understand the character. He really is an amazing actor!
I also really loved Zhang Kang Le's interpretion of Yan Xun, he was probably the most interesting character to me because his character develops a lot during the show. This actor is very very promising and I cannot wait to see what he does next!
Finally Huangyang Tian Tian's acting was also quite good, my only complaint is that she's a bit too young to depict a general, even with the styling and the makeup, she looked liked a child is some scenes. But her acting is impressive and I hope that last year's earring scandal won't ruin her career because she has a ton of potential.

Music wise, the show was amazing, I found myself listening to the soundtrack A TON while watching the show!
So, please, if you're intrigued by the show, WATCH THIS, don't even look at the MDL average note !!

This is your sign to visit Gye soo clinic's psychiatrist, again!

If you've completed s1 and wondering whether to watch s2 or if you're wondering whether to start this drama at all, well, you definitely should. (It's best to start from s1 though)
But after finishing s1, the first 2,3 episodes might feel a bit frustrating due to that specific character, but she is also a patient, thus we must be patient and listen to her side of the story as well.
The story was well paced, building up to a neat and well deserved happy ending. This drama became surprisingly heartfelt for me. I absolutely love Yoo se yeob, played by Kim min jae (Dali and the cocky prince), and i personally think saeguk attire suits him best. It's my first te seeing the FL but I loved her too. Gye ji han was amazing, he was played by the talented kim sang kyung (Memories of murder, Crowned clown) and I will get to him in a moment. First let me list the aspects of this which I especially enjoyed.

Love story - it's about two wounded souls healing each other and becoming their best versions. They have everything, great chemistry with heart fluttering scenes that made me grin from ear to ear, and emotional depth that will make one genuinely root for them. They are two beautiful and interesting individuals in their own rights. And their story is like a stream flowing through many obstacles, only making it stronger and adding to its beauty. Our ML, Yoo se yeob or poong, is just the right amount of clingy and mature. It is very admirable how he recognizes the skills of his lady Seo eun woo and encourages her to go out into the world and make a name for herself, thus provinng herself and earning her own freedom. I was definitely impressed by how they dealt head on with all the problems that were thrown their way, without trying to hide or run away.

Found family done right- the gye soo clinic family is all made up of people rescued by its owner physician Gye ji han. From Ip bun, lady namhae, jan gun and granny to yoo se yeob and his manservant man bok and lady seo eun woo. I usually don't like to watch this many side characters but all of their interactions felt very genuine. I found myself laughing out loud watching their chaos and ended up caring, worrying and loving each and everyone one of them. They all had distinct personalities and scenes were a real pleasure to watch.

Gye ji han - he became such an endearing character but i don't know how to describe him. First he appears to be that father figure who give a bit of wisdom to the leads and provide some comic relief. Well he does that, but he's so much more. He is witty, smart, funny and wise. I will miss his sharp words and manner of speaking with those gestures and expressions.

And man talk about annoying villains.. Thought we were done with them after s1, but here they come one after another.. But the finale is very satisfying as they redeemed those who were deserving and sent off others as they so deserved, for their crimes against our leads and also for getting on my nerves so much.
All in all wonderful drama, would recommend to everyone!

It's a must watch

I recently came across this series as I was looking for something to make me forget the real world and submerge into it. When I started I was not so sure but since I liked the genre so I thought of giving it a try. But as I started watching I couldn't stop myself from watching it more and more. The characters selection and the games storyline was top notch. Each character had depth and unique. They all showed the signs of human emotion layered in multiple shells. Especially the bond between the lead actors was something that I kept longing for until the end. Sadly, at the end the drama left me with an empty heart of why it had to end this way, why he had to grow old. I couldn't stop myself of wanting more, of the characters. Their bonds, the tension and more of it to keep growing. The drama kept me hooked for sure but the ending I really wanted it to end in reality and not in VR. I really wish I could change the ending, because the drama was so good. And it's rare to find dramas as such.

Things I liked:
1. Funny/silly moments.
2. Side characters.
3. Beautiful views.
4. Good acting.
5. The idea they had for the plot. The whole idea of the main characters switching their bodies was interesting and exciting, but they definitely did not have enough time to make the whole thing actually good.

Things I disliked:
1. Almost no chemistry between the main characters.
2. Everything is happening way to fast due to how short this series is.

Overall it was a nice and funny watch for the most part, but there wasn't much time for the main characters to open up more and have a genuine connection, in my opinion.
