No amount of colorful costuming can hide how dull this really was

Eighteen episodes in, I feel like I've wasted twelve hours of my life watching this drama.

Stuff happens, but the audience is never given time or reasons to care about it, and it feels like the main cast do an awful lot of nothing. For instance, although interesting (and awful) things happen around and to Wan Mei, she never actually does anything interesting herself unless it's by mistake or someone forces her into it. Likewise, Chang'An and Gong Li are nice to look at, but pretty one-note and, unfortunately, kind of boring. The villains are cartoonishly evil, which makes it hard to take any other parts of the drama seriously. Rare attempts to add depth to secondary characters generally fall flat.

Started promising, ended like a wet fart

I know this is a Hong Kong edition of the Korean drama “Marry My Husband” so I will cut it some slack on originality, but the producers chickened out on some plot points and I think it says a lot about censorship on Hong Kong TV these days.

So Samantha Ko plays timid woman who has stomach cancer, is married to a terrible man who steals her money, a mother-in-law who doesn’t care about her and a best friend who has an affair with her husband. When she catches them both in bed at a hotel (this is a an important point as I will reveal later), she runs away to the street to be pushed in front of a car by her best friend and boom, death.

Except no. Samantha wakes up in hospital many months in the past before it all happened. She was in a short coma after getting hit by a car.

This is a common trope in many manhuas where the protagonist dies and regresses to the past to make changes to their lives so the same tragic fates they experienced could be avoided, so I was hoping it would be done well here. At first it seemed as if it was flowing smoothly and it was following the typical trope beats beat for beat, but then suddenly it started to get very TVB.

You see the hotel too I mentioned earlier? It is room 310, and I noticed in this drama that every single scene that involved a hotel and an affair occurring it would happen at this same hotel in that same room, and somehow the characters would easily get access to the hotel room card to get into that room to take photos. Like did the production team just rent one room at a hotel and film all the affair scenes in that room on the same day to save money? It felt so lazy and it annoyed me so much.

Kenneth Ma is the love interest for Samantha and I will give it to him, there were many scenes where he would do things to save and help Samantha which I found to be very romantic and selfless. Those echoed the Korean vibes immensely and made me like Kenneth a lot, but sadly Kenneth is a rather passive character other than for those scenes, not really doing much but reacting to things out of his control and assisting Samantha without question because he truly likes her. His conflict with his elder brother is a subplot that somehow becomes the final plotpoint the drama ends on instead of the main plot with Samantha. The weird thing is that besides from one kiss scene between Kenneth and Samantha, there were not really many scenes where they got intimate. This made their coupling rather forced and I hated that.

Samantha’s best friend is played by Rosita Kwok and Rosita was such a disgusting bitch in this drama. She has absolutely no shame even when her cruel schemes are discovered and revealed by the other characters, she is not afraid to push the blame all on Samantha somehow. The more I watched the drama the more I wondered how anybody would let her into their friend circle because she was just a hateful harlot of a woman. Her reason for hating Samantha was also so stupid. I won’t even mention the cause here because when it is raised I actually said, “What? That’s why?” Watch it and go wtf yourself.

Samantha does manage to push her best friend with her ex-boyfriend played by Jonathan Cheung so she avoided the future where she would be treated poorly by him, but it took almost over half of the drama for her to succeed. Jonathan was such a persistent cockroach that it took ages to make him leave her.

What annoyed me most of all was near the end when Samantha decides that she never actually regressed but it was her subconscious that deduced her future would be from all the evidence she already knew before going into a coma after getting hit by a car. This made no sense because in the entire drama all the events that she saw happened and she got all the occurrences correctly, so how could her brain have known of those things would happen with that much accuracy? This was a plot rewrite by the producers that made no sense and it feels like it was forced on them by some censors.

The final boss is Kenneth’s elder brother played by Ben Wong. It turned out Samantha’s initial coma and future vision was caused by Ben’s reckless driving. He tried to cover it up but as Samantha started remembering details about the incident, Rosita suddenly has a video clip of what happened and it has Ben as the driver. Yes, Rosita had time to push Samantha into the road, have the car hit Samantha, then she had tine to run back and hide and then get her phone out to film the entire thing, and only near the end of the drama did she go “yes I will bring this out now”. Such lazy writing here. In any case, she wanted to sell the clip? Her husband Jonathan arrives and tries to sell the same clip to cover his debts, Ben goes apeshit and decides to kidnap Kenneth to make Samantha bring the clip to him. It all backfires after Kenneth uses the classic TVB trope of appealing to the goodness of the villains heart, which sort of works before Samantha arrives with the cops.

The drama ends with Samantha proposing to Kenneth with a ting she bought for herself and we never hear anymore about Rosita or Jonathan’s ultimate fates. The ending was so lame I almost vomited.

Started well, but chickened out at the end and gave us a lacklustre load of crap.

Omg I nearly forgot to mention the end credit song. That S.H.E.R.O song, what on earth were they thinking? And the AI animated superhero characters based on characters in the drama were terrible! They looked like terrible IronMan rejected ideas, and Matthew Ho was done wrong here because his AI character looked nothing like his at all! Instead it kinda resembles Edwin Siu! Stop overusing AI please!

Love and faith do not have to be opposed to each other

After watching Ticket to Heaven, I cannot calm down for a long time! It has such a huge lingering impact. The restrained, cautious love is full of emotional tension and warms my heart~ The delicate plot strikes straight at the heart. It is gentle, healing and memorable, really touching! It is incredibly moving! The director, script and storyline are fantastic. The actors deliver great performances and are good‑looking. Highly, highly recommended!!! The Most Visual Pleasing Sageuk-Horror Drama (for me)

The cinematography is absolutely top-tier! It’s pure eye candy from start to finish.

This drama is supposed to be horror, but the color grading honestly stole the spotlight. And it doesn't stop there—the camera composition, transitions, all the way to the VFX are just insane. Absolutely stunning. The 'good' characters have a bright color palette, while the 'evil' ones lean into dark, cool tones. Genius stuff.

They were also super smart with the time setting. You might ask, "How could it be?"

Usually, hanboks and temples in sageuk dramas feature super rich, vibrant colors. But here, since it’s set in the early Joseon period (aka super old-school, as you can tell by the queen's and concubines' hair buns), the hanbok colors are much more muted and simple. And those exact shades complement the color grading so well—HOW COOL IS THAT!?!? CMIIW though, I'm no sageuk expert.

I found myself rewinding several scenes more than once just because of how gorgeous they looked.

The transition from real footage to CGI, the entry of spirit characters, even a scene as simple as a funeral procession... the shots are insanely beautiful. Sorry if I sound dramatic, but it really is THAT good. Okay, enough about the visuals, let’s talk about the plot.

The storyline? EQUALLY TOP-NOTCH! 👏🏻 Honestly, if you've watched exorcism or sageuk dramas before, it might not shock you completely, but the combo of the plot and cinematography is just chef’s kiss. Plus, the casting is incredible. Every single actor brought their A-game.

only good if you want a high blood pressure

first they seriously need to check the cast ,for their maturity level before accepting them, a huge turn off when i watch someone acting like a kid from ep 1 until the end..
too much focus on a dude who isnt serious about dating , a lot of screentime about him being immature and giving false hopes. he seriously ruined the show, i started to think eliminations could have been good to kick out people who arent serious.
the only good thing is the gl part, if you want a good gl couple go on , the show overall was boring and more time was needed, 1 week? give it a month
i highly do not recommend this, next time i will be waiting until the dating show ends before i decide to watch or not

A flawed though highly entertaining viewing experience

Moonshine offers a refreshing and uniquely captivating premise within the historical genre, utilizing a strict alcohol prohibition era in Joseon as the backdrop for an unconventional romantic comedy. The drama shines brightest in its vibrant world-building, high-energy pacing, and a thoroughly entertaining premise that seamlessly blends high-stakes bootlegger tension with lighthearted humor. Visually, the production values are outstanding, presenting beautifully saturated historical aesthetics, fast-paced action sequences, and an engaging exploration of systemic corruption that elevates the plot beyond a simple romance.A major highlight of the series is the standout performance by Byeon Woo-seok, who portrays the rebellious, alcohol-loving crown prince with an effortless charm and immense charisma. He balances comedic timing with underlying emotional vulnerability, effectively stealing every single scene he occupies and establishing himself as the most compelling figure in the narrative.However, the show suffers from a critical flaw regarding its central romantic development and on-screen synergy. Despite the strong individual talents of the main cast, the female protagonist shares significantly more palpable chemistry and dynamic sparks with the second male lead rather than with the actual main lead. This severe mismatch in romantic tension deflates the emotional payoff of the primary love story, leaving viewers far more invested in the compelling second-lead interactions. As the plot shifts its focus heavily toward the predictable and chemically lacking main romance in the second half, the initial momentum slows down significantly, resulting in a flawed though highly entertaining viewing experience.

Conflicted Detectives

Great actors and characters, very intriguing and interesting mystery, but the realisation has its flaws. It feels as if the plot is being built on the spot without having been properly thought through from the beginning, so things don’t fall into place – instead, new details keep getting added on.

Still, the film works excellently as an action comedy with elements of mystery and crime, following detectives who have to solve a tricky case. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a very good choice for anyone looking for a relaxing and entertaining evening film. The laid-back atmosphere is only occasionally interrupted by short but intense scenes of violence.

At the beginning of the film it says it’s based on real events, but I assume most of it is made up, because it’s hard for me to imagine such a crime resolution and the way the criminals act in real life.

A beautifully wrapped package but entirely empty

Despite the massive anticipation surrounding its star-studded cast and high-budget production, Perfect Crown is a spectacular failure that stumbles under the weight of its own ambition, delivering a deeply frustrating and bad viewing experience. The most glaring issue lies in its catastrophic narrative pacing and incoherent world-building, which feel incredibly disjointed from the very first episode. Instead of naturally immersing the audience into its alternate constitutional monarchy, the series relies heavily on clunky, lazy exposition to establish the rules of this modern royal society. Because the role and systemic power of the monarchy are never clearly defined, the political intrigue feels remarkably superficial, completely lacking any real stakes, tension, or sense of authority. The script rushes carelessly through pivotal plot points, such as accelerating the central contract marriage, leaving absolutely no room for organic character development or emotional stakes. Consequently, the overarching storyline plays out like a highly predictable, poorly executed collection of overused romantic comedy tropes rather than a compelling, original drama.This narrative disaster is made all the more disappointing because the show is undeniably gorgeous on the surface, boasting high-end production values that ultimately serve as a hollow distraction. Visually, the drama offers breathtakingly lavish costumes and immovably grand, opulent palace sets that initially create the illusion of a prestigious masterpiece. However, the director completely fails to back up this glossy aesthetic with any actual substance, directorial vision, or emotional depth. The directing relies on uninspired, flat composition that treats these expensive backdrops like a static museum display rather than a living, breathing environment. Crucial emotional close-ups are poorly timed, often cutting away too early or dragging out awkwardly, which completely ruins the dramatic tension of key confrontations. The editing is equally chaotic, utilizing abrupt, jarring cuts that disrupt the flow of scenes and leave viewers disoriented by the jarring shifts between polished visuals and sloppy transition work.These technical failures only amplify the complete lack of on-screen synergy and genuinely terrible leading performances. Byeon Woo-seok portrays the leading male protagonist offering a lifeless, mechanical line delivery that severely undercuts the emotional nuance required for a trapped, lonely royal. On the other hand, IU leans far too heavily into a theatrical, highly stylized acting method that constantly clashes with the more grounded moments of the script. Her portrayal of the female lead reads as overly artificial and grating, making her character feel obnoxious and thoroughly exhausting rather than charmingly ambitious. Because their individual acting styles are so completely mismatched, their shared scenes entirely lack the profound romantic chemistry needed to justify why everyone in the narrative is supposedly drawn to her. In trying to be an addictive, glamorous modern fairy tale, the drama sacrifices logical writing, competent storytelling, and basic character development, leaving behind a beautifully wrapped package that is entirely empty, hollow, and devoid of substance.

This was so so soo satisfying!

I truly loved this short series! I have been waiting for it to air and when it did, I had doubts, "hmm.. what is going on.." but I love both leads and kept it going to find myself replaying each ep over and over. It's just so good and what is even better, since I've read the novel, it was true till the end. The happy ending, the well written characters, I found myself crying and laughing. I cried so much when the child died, so sad!! Then I was laughing when seventh prince was questioning Shen Xiao on knowing his sisters (Zhao Yang) place way too well lol!! It was indeed a fun ride and I enjoyed the cast, they played their part VERY well. I even had a few tears when the ex, Cui, lost it all, he deserved it but deep down he was a good guy just got corrupted by the crown prince (glad he was off my screen finally!) and I came to love the crown princess! She indeed gained my favor 100%.
So don't knock this drama till you try it. You may find yourself feeling like I did and now I am sad it's over! Going to replay this for awhile! Great job, guys on the awesome job y'all did for this series. 😁♥️

Good But Not Great…

I think we are way past this point with Korean BL, but I guess I was wrong.

This isn’t a bad watch, but there’s so much that the story (acting) could do better. The actors’ acting isn’t reaching me at all, and I know it’s still too early to judge what their chemistry would be like.

I don’t particularly dislike the storyline, it’s okay, but the execution is a bit mehhhh in my opinion.

If it were say, 2020 or 2021 or even 2022 and we got a KBL like this, I would have been too excited that we at least even got something, but this is 2026, and we expect better than what this is giving so far.
