A Story of Love That Keeps Starting Over

I found Love of the Divine Tree quite interesting at the beginning, especially because of the dynamic between the main characters. I liked that the male lead starts off more aggressive and emotionally burdened, carrying guilt over losing her in the past. That immediately gives the story some emotional weight.

The reincarnation aspect is also well done. She comes back without her memories, and he has to deal with that while slowly rebuilding their relationship from scratch. It’s interesting to watch him fall for her again, and at the same time, she also develops feelings for him without knowing anything about their past. When she eventually finds out, it adds more depth to their relationship.

However, there’s a point where the story starts to feel a bit tiring. When he loses his memories (because of what was done to him), the narrative basically resets, he becomes cold and distant again, and their relationship has to restart. I understand the idea behind it: showing that they are destined to find each other no matter what. But in execution, it feels repetitive and somewhat boring.

After that, the drama improves again, but then it slows down once more in certain parts, especially with side plots and secondary characters that don’t add much to the story. There were moments near the end where things felt confusing, like the plot was going back and forth, and I struggled to fully follow what was happening.

That said, the final part, especially the last battle, was quite engaging. I also liked the ending overall. Seeing them finally end up together, get married, and later have children gives a sense of closure and makes everything they went through feel worth it.

One aspect I think was not well developed is her love for him in the past. Their relationship in that timeline feels more maternal than romantic. She teases him and takes care of him, but there are barely any clear signs that she loves him as a woman. Later on, the story suggests that those feelings existed, but it feels underdeveloped. There should have been more subtle hints or small moments to make it more believable.

Overall, it’s a drama with a strong concept, visually appealing characters, and an engaging main relationship, but it suffers from pacing issues and repetition.

The plot has lost the plot

I'm torn about this drama. There is so much to like. Yet, the plot is doing my head in.

It is not as if there is no through-line. There are too many! I'm constantly thinking, did I miss something? Are we still in Kansas . . I mean Seoul.

I have a laundry list of such observations. I'll just focus on a few key ones that are particularly problematic.

For instance, the Joseon part of the show is quite inconsistent. Most of the time, the FL appears as a young (late teen?) court lady. Yet in other scenes, she appeared as an older high-ranking concubine and even the Queen. I know forbidden love is plot du jour for many sageuk dramas, but one core tenets is a lowly maid don't get elevated to Queenship without exceptional circumstances. In this case, I saw none.

The confusion spreads to the present. The soul swapped FL has this haughty quality, and I love her archaic ways. She knows a lot about the intricacies of the Joseon court, and she is supposed to know Chinese medicine as well. Once again, these are all above the pay grade of a typical court lady. In the present, she is clever and SUPER adaptable. She can use a mobile phone and other mod cons within hours of crash landing in modern Seoul. Who is she? I sense a great disturbance in the Force. 🤔

Along the way, several characters are used as plot devices. Such as the lady shaman which is air dropped into the plot to give the writer-nim a convenient out. There is no backstory. Is she a demi-god?

My biggest issue is with the soul of the modern FL. She is meant to be a c-grade actress playing small roles to survive. She was a famous child star, but a family tragedy torpedoed her promising career. The show did give us a bit of her backstory, but it is hyper fixated on one event. Then nothing. Why is this woman the Chosen One?

To this day, I'm still not sure what happened to her soul. Did it get wiped? Did she get send to Joseon? If you stop and think about, it feels wrong. That woman lived for 30+ years and has a grandma who loves her. Don't get in the way of story telling is a poor excuse. This is why I have a love-hate relationship with this series.

On the positive side, I love the FL's acting. She IS the show. The ML is fine. He is suitably stoic and handsome. He played both roles comfortably.

They certainly have chemistry and the skinship felt nice and natural. Especially towards the end when they are quite playful with each other. This is a nice change from the one-and-done staged kiss with fireworks.

The large ensemble is filled with familiar faces. Most of their roles are straight out of central casting. They fulfilled their contractual obligations.

Then the ending happened. Ye gods, they must have blown their budget on rainbow effect and unicorn hire. It is sweetness overload and should come with health warnings.

Our leads certainly deserved their HEA ending and I can't complain. My problem is how it is delivered. It is just a parade of scenes. Delightful but hardly illuminating.

Oh, there is one final sting in that tail. The FL visits the antagonist in jail and did the usual farewell speech. She then told him he could have broken the cycle of suffering that trapped the three of them. The problem is the antagonist has no memory of his past life so he is just being a ruthless heir-in-waiting. He did exactly what is expected of his character. It feels rather self serving.

If I'm honest, I'm not sure what she is talking about either. I don't remember any 300yo curse. Our writer-nim loves this type of "convenient" throwaway lines and subplots. It sounds good on a neat and tidy storyboard with the writer-nim seeing all. We are none the wiser.

This is the fundamental problem. It is hard to be immersed when you start to question everything.

In the end, I must temper my expectations. It went from a refreshing and promising romance to a messy guilty pleasure. Damn those little grey cells. I wish I can go full couch potato mode.

Even now, half of me wants to bottle the swoon-y bits and sell them on Etsy. The other half is hugging my therapy teddy while rocking back and fore mumbling "Ask no questions. Ask no . .".

It is a rare gem that delivers flawless execution from the very first episode to the breathtaking finale.Story (10/10):The political intrigue and schemes in this drama are top-tier. It keeps you on the edge of your seat with smart, ruthless, and morally grey characters playing a deadly game of chess. What I loved the most was the heavy focus on deep loyalty and brotherhood over romance. The pacing was perfect, and the plot twists were incredibly well-thought-out.Acting & Cast (10/10):Luo Yunxi delivers an absolute masterclass in acting. His character is brilliant, complex, and emotionally deep. But honestly? The best part of the whole show was the Male Lead's chemistry with the rest of the cast. He literally had insane chemistry and a top-tier bromance with every single male character on screen, haha! Whether they were friends, allies, or even rivals, the tension and bonds were peak entertainment.Music & Production (10/10):The cinematography is gorgeous, perfectly capturing the dark, atmospheric mood of the Jianghu. The fight choreographies are sharp, dynamic, and full of weight. Combined with a beautiful soundtrack, the production value is outstanding.Overall:If you are looking for a brilliant, smart historical drama driven by exceptional schemes and unmatched brotherhood with every guy around, do not skip this one. 7/10 Short and simple
The Nameless Season is a cute and light microseries-honestly, it feels like something they could've just made into a short movie instead. The plot is super simple, not much really happens, but it still kept me entertained while I was working on my laptop.
It's about two boys who are classmates and friends, and one of them secretly likes the other. Not a lot of characters, and it definitely feels like a low-budget Korean BL, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
My only complaint is how slow some of the conversations are. Like in one scene where they're eating and drinking, it takes forever for someone to answer a question-it just drags a bit.
But I actually liked how it ended! I thought it would be one-sided love, but the ending was sweet and satisfying. If you're just looking for something light and easy to watch in one sitting, I'd recommend it.

Simple but cute

I'm writing this review before I had watched the Japanese version. The only reason I'm watching this at the moment is because of 'ลบยัง' ost. So fucking peak bro. I love the dance aswell it's so cute and I've been seeing it everywhere. I'm not sure why it never crossed my mind to watch this series, especially as someone who has been watching since like 2018. Even if the most is peak I have to say the begin title is not my style at all and one of the most disappointing once I've seen Gmmtv have. A lot of people who saw the Japanese version say they prefer the Japanese one. I'm really excited to see the Japanese version aswell. Haven't seen the best reviews on this series, so when I started this I got really curious on why? But now I get it.

Love how the cast includes a lot of newer and less well known gmmtv actors. I really hope to see more of Chokun, Pahn, Aungpao and Papang in the future. Although I did watch some other series where they played supports in. Having a more original casting is also sooo fucking nice because it isn't like: "oh hey didn't you play in ....." every time I watch a scene. Also really good acting work, love especially fourth and Chokun.

Ok so I know this sounds weird but I love misunderstandings. It just adds some small angst to the story, but for this story, in my opinion, the angst was really weak. I loved how fluff, sweet and green flagged coded the characters were, but it also made the story weak, especially on the first part. It's just veryyyy simple not super special or anything. Just you average middle school romance.

I love how it's Idiots in love and it makes it really funny. Just two stupid losers who don't know what to do with their feelings. Lol and half and Kongthap not do a shit when it comes to confessing hahahhah, it was just Atom and Matmi that did all the work. They tried to get closer to their love interests but for Half and Kongthap there was like barely any effort. Also, I was expecting something like a love triangle but even that was gone within 2 episodes, just like the erasure and the feelings Atom had for Matmi... I have to say, I started this show for Kongthap and Atom but stayed for Half and Matmi. I normally feel more relatable to the gay couples, but the story of Half and Matmi was wayyy more interesting than the gay story.

Again, it's very mid. But, I do think this show is more for kids/younger audience. From the romance, slow burn and story. Another thing I have to mention is the expression weren't strong either. That's not the actor's fault, but the writing. They barely had very emotional or expressive realisation moments. Which made the series feel cheap. There was almost nothing shown over the fear of coming out, even though they clearly TRIED to imply it. Love the Gay teachers who helped Atom realise his feelings, because apparently he couldn't do that himself? It's nice how they tried to add them but they ended up having to fix the relationship issues, and after it was fixed like almost ZERO screen time.

Overall, the ending was veryyyy weak. Nothing special and I'm not sure if I would suggest the series. This is cute for people who are like 13-14 years old maybe. I think I would've definitely liked it more if I watched it back then. It also kinda reminds me of heartstoppers, especially with the type of romance. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some influences they got from heartstoppers, it just got the same kind of vibe yk? Another thing I disliked was the amount of advertising. Like yes, you have sponsors but seriously? Needing to add it every 3 seconds?

"A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift

Reminiscent of the social satire "A Modest Proposal", a short story by Jonathan Swift, this drama, like "A Modest Proposal" focuses on the theme with power comes responsibility. While "AMP" focused on the effects of the Irish potato famine on the poor, each episode of the drama explores a problem within the Korean educational system. A system controlled by rich, powerful, influential people hell bent on making sure they get and keep their piece of pie while the poor just have to make do with the crumbs. As the episodes progress, the revelations of how and why these problems exist are revealed. Because these issues are well ingrained in the system during each episode, the viewer is given adventure, comedy, therapy, and justice. This is what makes it different from other school dramas. This is a very well written and intelligent no holds barred drama.

When it comes to fighting, episodes 1, 2, 7, and 10, be prepared for the male lead to use very controlled corporal punishment against some not so innocent older male minors (1 & 2). The most violent fights are with male adults who have weapons and fighting experience (episodes 2 & 7). In episode 10 the older high school students have weapons (pipes and knives). One episode about 14-year-old males, when fighting occurs, the main female lead takes over, and she is also very controlled (even though she is the "crazy" half of the duo). The male lead never lays a hand on younger students. In fact, there is one serious scene where the main male lead seems to be holding back a laugh while talking "seriously" with the boys. So the violence towards male minors is very carefully handled. The same with the females. Neither the male nor female protagonist use martial arts on female students. So the writers went out of their way to make sure that females are not physically assaulted by the people from the bureau as they are setting the example.

The rest of the drama deals with cyber and psychological bullying, drugs, gambling, exam fraud, and parental pressure. Even though it is episodic, the episodes do tie together with an overall arc dealing with the main male protagonists. By the end, the Korean educational system is turned upside down. It was a wild ride.

What I liked but others were concerned about:

1) Many commenters have written about the protagonists having full immunity from the law (in their personal life as well as their work life) as they dish out corporal punishment, but that is where the satire comes in. For whatever reason, these bullies have long been able to do these things without any consequences, it is like they have had immunity from the law, so why should ordinary people have to follow the law while rich, powerful, and influential people don't. So it is quite therapeutic to see the bullies get bullied in the exact same way as they bully their peers. Yet, we understand that this is not the way to deal with these issues in the long run. This is even mentioned in the drama. This drama is satire. This drama is not advocating for teachers to go out and beat up their unruly students. It is advocating that something needs to be done. They even give reasonable solutions as well as the over-the-top solutions. For the most part it is about changing the laws and adding protection for all people involved: teachers, parents, and students. Since the people with influence run the school system, they need to be aware of and do something to make the educational system equal for everyone. Rather than abuse the power that is given to them. So having someone with immunity come in and take them out is the icing on the cake for comedy, but also show that with power comes responsibility.

2) Another area of concern viewers had was with the issue of the teacher who was afraid to discipline a specific student in fear of retaliation. Once the teacher got up the courage to discipline this student, she used a wand to smack the girl's hands when the girl refused to solve the problem on the board. The teacher kept smacking the girl's hands when the girl continued to refuse to answer the problem. When the girl finally decides to do the problem, you could see that she had no trouble using her hands to do the problem, so you know the teacher did not hit her very hard with the wand. Again, very controlled use of corporal punishment. Viewers commented on the fact that the teacher used the wand instead of just asking the student to leave the room. This wouldn't have solved the problem. For me, the teacher's act symbolized the teacher having the power over the classroom again instead of the power being "in the hands of the students". Will the teacher continue to use the wand? I seriously doubt it as you could tell that it hurt the teacher more to have to use the wand than it hurt the student. With power comes responsibility.

3) The most serious is the issue of false allegations whether of child abuse or sexual assault. The drama handles the child abuse case really well. It is the sexual assault allegations that viewers are concerned about. In the drama, a girl accuses two male teachers of sexual assault. Both teachers are innocent of the allegations. However, by the time the investigation is done, both teachers have committed suicide. Viewers are concerned that because the writers didn't make one of them true that people will get the message that all sexual assault cases are false. While I understand this concern, for me, this was not the issue the writers were dealing with. We all know that teachers sexually assault students and these cases should be taken seriously, but it is the power these accusations have on the accused, the family of the accused, and the society as a whole. The girl posted these accusations online and commenters wrote about harming the families of these teachers before even hearing the whole story. Both teachers committed suicide. These false allegations harmed innocent human beings. This is what I liked about that episode. They explored the impact of these allegations on the accused. The one thing I didn't like about the episode was the ending. The girl is punished, but it wasn't really clear what she was being punished for as she had done so many things to deserve punishment.

4) Loved the quirky "romance" between the computer guy and the female lead as it brought some frivolity to balance out the seriousness of the male lead's love life. Commenters have said that it wasn't needed.

What I didn't like: Sometimes the female lead is way too the over the top in her acting, but I understand that she is the "crazy" to the male lead's seriousness, and he is serious enough for the both of them. Also, the rush wears off at around episode 7 and found myself just listening rather than watching.

Advice: If you are sensitive to violence, do not watch. If you are looking for realism, this is not that drama. If you are looking for fun, excitement, and a lesson, enjoy the ride!

The chemistry between the leads is absolutely phenomenal, making every interaction feel natural, heartfelt, and incredibly believable.
