Good Male Lead, Unconvincing Romance

Initially, I thought it was going to get better. I've learned that with certain Cdrama's, they really emphasize the slow burn love story, but this was painful. I kept pushing my way through the episodes, but once I hit 14, I couldn't do it anymore. The only reason why I gave it the few stars I did was because of the ML. I thought he did a decent job, and I appreciated him being straightforward, for the most part, about his feelings toward the FL. The FL, on the other hand, it frustratingly annoying. Her back and forth attitude with the ML gave me whiplash. The actress they chose for the FL was also unconvincing with her acting. I didn't think it could get any worse than Bella in Twilight, but I was wrong.

Actually worth the hype!

A demon hunter, two cunning nine-tailed fox sisters and an innocent-looking priest accompanied by a disciple of the Shilin Sect find themselves thrown together as they all try to find the fox demon Xiao Wei who is causing havoc. All with their own purposes in mind, everyone wants to catch the demon first.
What they uncover tho, is far beyond just catching a demon. From here on, the drama evolves into a tale of loneliness, battle against destiny and love that’ll break your heart.

The story is fully packed. There is no time to breathe and no time to get bored. There is always something happening. Each episode ends on a small cliffhanger, making you unable to stop watching and making you want to hit the next-episode-button one after another. First you want to know how they’ll catch the fox demon, then you also wanna see the butterfly demon. Then you wonder who the MLs actually are, and finally start asking yourself what the hell is even going on here. And this continues on. There is less talk and more action or discovery. It was complex. You were always fooled, making you question if the intentions of the characters were good or bad throughout more than half of the series. A lot of back and forth and confusion through time travel and unchronological reveals. All of that was so much input, I already forgot about some parts. I SO love stories like that, haha. They had many stories to tell - and in my opinion there was still room for a lot more.

Given the premise, when I started the drama I thought Shiguang would be the main character. Looking at the poster and the first few episodes, I believed both couples' stories would be treated equally. And I also thought the drama would be mostly about them all forming a friendship and hunting evil demons together. But nope. None of that.

But these are things I actually missed in this drama. Ji Ling and Wuyis story was awesome - a masterpiece - a 10 outta 10. I loved Ji Lings tragic and lonely story so damn much. Those two were the real MCs of this drama. And I can’t complain. What I complain about is, that Shiguang and WanYangs story wasn’t given the same attention and lovingly execution. They put all their heart into Ji Ling and WuYi - their story got all the emotions: be it sadness, heartbreak, longing, falling in love - you name it. You could always feel it and follow their development. But Shiguangs and Wangyans story totally fell short. I know their story isn’t as dramatic - but there was a lot of potential for a better execution. Their story began so good. I loved them together during the Xiao Wei case. Then there was a pause and their romance only started inside the stone illusion - which is ok. But I could not feel their love at all. Why did they fall in love? Because they were trapped in the roles of a married couple? That’s also okay, but then show it please. I found the scenes of them way too few and the timeskips way too big to actually feel their developing feelings. It felt like from one episode to the next they suddenly became a loving couple.

While I’m at it: the characters were amazing. Ji Ling anyways - his character had a long very sad story and was super complex. Wuyi totally owned up to her title as the female lead. She was sweet but not innocent. She was strong enough to stand on her own and was not dependent. She could be cunning but was overall just kind and broken. Not child-like, not annoying, not weak. She too is a 10/10.
WangYans character started out good too. She was quieter and a bit plainer tho. Like I already said, I found it sad that they didn’t have as much screentime as WuYi and that they didn’t make more out of her story. I loved her strong bond with her sister. I just wonder, why in the last few episodes, she behaved weirdly differently. When Wuyi was shattered because Ji Ling seemed to have died for good, I would have expected Wanyan to immediately go to her, hug her and cry with her. Instead they were separated for long because her and Shiguang went to the dragon valley alone. And when she was back she was just like “come back to moon sect, we are there for you” and then left again without looking back. Hm. This didn't fit her character from the first half.

And lastly Shiguang, who I am the most disappointed in. As I stated, I thought he would be the main character, as he was the one becoming the new (and only!) Dragon Deity. But he had the least screentime. I loved him during the Xiao Wei case.. but then his character suddenly got weaker. I hated him in the stone illusion. He knew very well that it was just an illusion of the past and it would bring them absolutely nothing being there. The real world needed them. But instead of searching for the star stone, he played house in there for over 10 years. I mean, I understand he was emotional because the illusion was part of his own story. But it made him look incredibly weak and useless. Outside in the real world Bai Ze was risking his life to prolong their time in the illusion so they would have time to get out. And Shiguang? Happily played house? I’m sorry but I hoped he would be more of a fighter.

I also absolutely loved the side characters btw. Everyone was interesting and literally deserves their own 30 episode drama. Weasel demon You Chi, Li Jie and Wu Huo especially, but also the 4 demons connected to the dragon deity's ring. And of course not to forget Tian Di and the star stone origin.

The production crew put a lot of effort in cinematography and costumes. They all looked amazing, the make-up stunning, the special effects incredible. Especially the foxes. The scene of Shiguang destroying the last piece of oracle stone was a feast to the eyes. The only flaws in this drama were the fox-heads and Ji Lings fox tail. In the state of semi-transformation, for a few seconds in one of the earlier episodes, the nine tailed foxes had human-bodies and fox-heads. The fox heads were not animated and looked like they were bought straight from temu. Ji Lings fox tail and ears were also not animated and looked exactly like what they were: a plastic tail stuffed into his trousers lmao. Those two things - as small as they were and as short as they were on screen - stood out SO much because everything else was high quality. The animated foxes, Jiu Yings demon power, the fire swords, Ji Lings wings at the end - everything a sight to behold. And then there was the fox tail from temu lol. And it's a pity. I don’t know why they didn't animate them. The budget wasn’t enough for this little detail?

Let me move on to the supposed highlight of the series. When Shiguang actually became the dragon. And here I got the impression the production team actually hated Shiguang lol. All the talk about dragon claws, dragon eyes and dragon horns…. he got the horns. And that was it. No colorful eyes like the demons. No claws. No special attire. Just the horns. He didn’t even transform into a dragon, he just had a fire dragon as special attack (why does this sound like pokemon lol). He didn't even manage to kill the villain alone, at the end it was still Ji Ling saving the day. Everyone taught Ji Ling how to be the fake dragon deity, but no one taught the real one how to be the dragon deity xD.

But! One thing which was 100% flawless was the OST and BGM. They were so POWERFUL. Usually I don’t even notice the BGM much. But here everything slayed. The OST was incredibly beautiful. Always fitting the scene and creating the right mood. My favorites are “Jade Sleep”, “Not Suffering” and “Innocent as a fox”, but the others were also great. This is also the first drama in which I was amazed by the BGM. And by “the BGM was powerful” I mean: it made battle scenes appear epic. It made mysterious scenes eerie even. It made emotional scenes hurt 10 times more.

Other stuff I enjoyed:
-I liked how the antagonist wasn't defeated easily
-I liked the bromance between Ji Ling and Li Jie, Shiguang and You Chi and the sismance between Wangyan and Wuyi
-The acting of the whole cast was awesome

Other stuff I would have wished for:
I would have loved more demon hunting like in the first few episodes. In general I would have loved seeing more demons or people. For a demon/deity world, that was really sparse. The story was tightly knitted around the main characters and their little circle. They didn't come across many other (less to no important) people or demons. And I wished for more bonding within the group. They concentrated mostly on the couples, but I wish we would have seen everyone becoming family. Like… wouldn't you naturally want to be on good terms with the sister of your gf? Did Shiguang and Wuyi even had ONE conversation at all? Or: Li Jie and Wuyi were the closest people to Ji Ling, but they both mourned on their own, Li Jie did not even tell Wuyi about the dragon heart. Hm.

At the very end, the loneliest soul must be Li Jie after all. The couples would be together somehow in one world or another. But Li Jie is about to search for someone who might not even exist in this world. Now that is real tragedy lol. No really, I’m glad the couples can meet again in some life… but I’m sad about all the people that won’t meet again.

I know this sounds like I nitpick a lot. But I’m complaining on a high level here. Most of my criticism aren't things that made the drama bad, but things that would have made it even better. All in all there would have been only one solution: more episodes. I wouldn't have minded 20 more episodes if they would have taken more time for a better execution of the 2nd couple etc.

Overall, I really loved this drama a lot. You have to know, I dropped SO MANY popular and hyped dramas, some fan-favorites etc. But this is the first full-length C-drama after quite a while that kept me interested from start to finish. Very intriguing and captivating.

Not worth it despite the huge rating. Disappointed.

I don't know why this has so much high rating. I started watching this because it had such high rating. And I am disappointed. The story basically feels like I am watching the life story of only one character (Sun). And I feel like his acting is not so good.

Also I don't feel any chemistry between the couple , didn't like the casting. I wanted to see equally of both the main character not just one. The way the top (jay) falls in love with bottom (Sun) is also weird. I am talking about their first meeting(you will understand what I am talking about if you have watched the series).Overall not worth it. Not much depth in the acting or story either. You can give the manhwa a try but the live action ain't worth it.

Fourever Forever

Overall, this is a much better series than the dribble of Part One. However, it is a task to watch this marathon because it is close to a million episodes to get through. A bit of an exaggeration, but sometimes, it honestly felt that way. In essence, it is three separate love stories more-or-less connected to one another because they are all friends. Not all three are of equal interest; at least to me. It becomes a continuation of the friendships from Part One but now moving on with love stories of several of the peripheral characters from that original premise and how their romances transformed. Of course, this series is entertaining. And with so many episodes, after a while, it becomes your companion. A part of your routine. And when it ended, in a way you miss them. So, like many, I was sad to see the series end. I did become invested in these characters. So, in that sense, it certainly is worth watching more so if you watched the first season.

This was an alright show. Kinda weak on the writing department, but not the worst to be honest. The characthers were really great, especially Touma, Kento, Rintaro and Ren, they had such amazing arcs and growth, I have to say that I loved them. Alsot the fights were very cool, abandoning the martial arts of classic KR for sword based dueling was a breath of fresh air and pretty fun. The forms were amazing and the whole vibe was good. It really felt like an epic fantasy Kamen Rider, more than any other show. It was about frienship and the importance of stories, also about the power of human will that decides to live despite what appears to be an inevitable destiny, we decide to write even if we don't have free will, which is a touching message. That said, it had a lot of boring segments, so I can't really give it an high score. One last thing: the final battles against the divine sages were some of the best KR battles ever.

Bloom Once, Explain Never

Blossoms of Power is a tale where revenge blooms in the unlikeliest of gardens. After surviving the massacre of the Gu family, Gu Qing Zi returns under the identity of Shen Xi He, the Princess of the Northwest, trading innocence for steel and resolve. Across the political chessboard stands Crown Prince Xiao Hua Yong, physically frail yet always several moves ahead of everyone else. As ambition collides with loyalty, the two form a formidable alliance, navigating a court where every smile conceals a dagger and power belongs to those willing to outplay fate itself.

The opening immediately grabbed my attention. Watching Qing Zi orchestrate her own death to frame another family already tells you everything you need to know about her. She is intelligent, calculative, ruthless when necessary, and always thinking several steps ahead. Her death also leaves Prince Xin, her husband, devastated. Forced to oversee the Gu family's massacre despite wanting to spare her, he is left helpless as she chooses death on her own terms. Then, almost immediately, the story shifts to the real Shen Xi He, a gentle and refined princess travelling to the capital for an arranged marriage. She falls into the water after an assassination attempt by one of her own maids, a mysterious double moon appears, and suddenly everything changes. That is also where my biggest issue with the drama begins.

Considering China's restrictions on resurrection, transmigration, and time travel stories, I was genuinely curious about how the drama would handle this premise. Instead of explaining it, however, the narrative simply leaves everything hanging. There is also a three year gap between Qing Zi's death and Xi He falling into the water, making the situation even more confusing. My own interpretation is that the double moon temporarily opened some kind of path between souls. Qing Zi's body had already died while her soul remained in limbo, whereas Xi He's body was still alive but somehow inherited Qing Zi's memories, skills, and personality while retaining her own memories. That explanation at least allows me to believe Xi He herself never truly disappeared. It makes the situation feel less unfair than having her body completely stolen.

The problem is that this is only my interpretation because the drama never confirms anything. It asks viewers to fill in the blanks themselves. Even stranger, Xi He wakes up with almost no confusion whatsoever. There is no existential crisis, no struggle adapting to a completely different life, and barely any reaction to such an unbelievable supernatural event. She simply wakes up and continues living as the fierce strategist we knew as Qing Zi. The people around her notice her dramatic personality change, but those concerns are brushed aside almost comically. Even her father and brother eventually conclude that the capital simply changed her. It almost feels as though soul swapping is just another Tuesday. For the rest of this review, I will simply refer to both Qing Zi and Xi He as Xi He.

Unfortunately, this habit of withholding explanations continues throughout the drama. Blossoms of Power often drops important details in passing or hides context within blink and you'll miss it shots. It almost feels like the drama is challenging viewers to solve a puzzle rather than simply telling its story. Sometimes that is rewarding, but other times it becomes frustrating because missing one tiny detail can leave an entire plot point feeling incomplete.

After Xi He survives her fall, Crown Prince Xiao Hua Yong discovers her unconscious and gives her a rare medicinal plant that he had risked his own life obtaining. He could have used it to treat himself, but instead chooses to save a woman he has just met. It sounds like love at first sight for Hua Yong. As he accompanies her journey to the capital, his admiration and respect only grows. He quickly recognizes Xi He's intelligence and strategic mind, seeing her as someone who can stand beside him rather than behind him. He is then determined to make her his Crown Princess. Now, Hua Yong deserves his own paragraph because shameless might as well be his middle name.

This man has absolutely no concept of subtlety. His flirtation is direct, relentless, and almost weaponised. Every other episode had me shrinking into my chair from second hand embarrassment because of another cheesy line or another overly confident romantic gesture. At first I genuinely questioned whether I could survive dozens of episodes of this. Strangely enough, somewhere along the way, I became desensitised. I ended up reacting exactly like Xi He herself, smiling, shaking my head, and quietly accepting that this hopeless romantic was simply being himself. Like eating overly spicy food, eventually your tongue gives up resisting.

That said, the drama occasionally mistakes exaggeration for spectacle. The most absurd example has to be Hua Yong climbing an icy mountain to retrieve another medicinal plant for Xi He. As an isolated romantic moment, it certainly looks impressive. In context, though, it made me question every law of physics. His experts fail to find the plant, naturally he succeeds, and then he somehow jumps off a cliff only to throw a rope back onto the very same cliff and climb it again. Unless I completely misunderstood the geography, I spent more time wondering why he did not simply climb down normally than appreciating the romance. It felt less like survival and more like an opportunity to farm aura points. Younger me probably would have swooned. Current me just stared at the screen wondering what exactly I had witnessed.

Despite Hua Yong's overwhelming devotion to Xi He, I was pleasantly surprised that his character never became one dimensional. I usually find characters whose entire world revolves around their love interest rather shallow, but Hua Yong avoids that trap. Before becoming Xi He's biggest supporter, he is first and foremost someone worthy of becoming Emperor. He genuinely cares for his people, takes his responsibilities seriously, and possesses intelligence equal to Xi He's. His playful exterior hides someone remarkably capable, which gives his character far more depth than his endless flirting initially suggests.

Ironically, despite all that effort, I never fully bought into the chemistry between Hua Yong and Xi He. Throughout most of the drama, Xi He remains emotionally guarded while Hua Yong does almost all the emotional heavy lifting. Their relationship often felt less like two people falling in love together and more like one person running a marathon while the other politely walks behind. Even after marriage, when they finally became more affectionate, I still found myself appreciating them more than actually feeling butterflies. Hua Yong's affection is certainly entertaining, but it often felt so excessive that I struggled to fully believe it as genuine love.

Ironically, the supporting couple completely stole the show for me. Bu Shu Lin and Cui Jin Bai had the chemistry I was searching for all along. Shu Lin disguises herself as a man in order to inherit her family's position, and Fan Shuai Qi absolutely sells the role. She is easily one of the most convincing female crossdressers I have seen in a Chinese costume drama. What begins as a scheme involving Jin Bai slowly develops into genuine affection, with Jin Bai hilariously questioning his own identity long before discovering Shu Lin is actually a woman. Their relationship develops naturally, their interactions feel believable, and by the time romance finally blossoms, I was fully invested. It is just unfortunate that censorship noticeably limited their romantic scenes, especially during the latter half of the drama.

The supporting cast in general is one of the drama's strongest assets. Lai Wei Ming was fantastic as Prince Lie and honestly had me wishing his character received a happier ending. Xu Zheng Xi once again proves that yearning is practically his speciality. Ever since Love of Nirvana, it feels like he has mastered the art of looking emotionally exhausted. It suits him extremely well, although I also hope future roles allow him to showcase different sides of his acting. I also have to give special praise to Lin Zi Ye as Tian Yuan. Every expression he made whenever Hua Yong unleashed another shameless line was comedy gold.

The main cast, however, is more of a mixed bag for me. I still cannot decide whether I actually liked He Yu's performance as Hua Yong. There are moments where he fits the role perfectly, but there are just as many where something feels missing. I actually preferred him in previous roles where he played colder and more reserved characters. Here, he strangely gives off supporting male lead energy rather than carrying the screen as the main lead. Outside of Hua Yong's outrageous flirting, I never felt especially emotionally attached to him, particularly during scenes that required heavier emotional delivery.

Meng Zi Yi left me similarly conflicted. Her naturally doll like appearance suits Xi He's composed and calculating personality beautifully. Unfortunately, that restraint also carries into scenes requiring stronger emotional expression. Her emotional breakdown near the end particularly disappointed me. Without the context of the scene, I genuinely might have mistaken it for someone rolling around in the snow with severe stomach cramps. Crying scenes need messy expressions. Furrowed brows, trembling lips, strained muscles, anything that convinces me the character is breaking apart. Instead, she often looks more concerned about maintaining a flattering camera angle than completely letting herself go emotionally. I actually enjoyed her performance in Blossom, but Princess Gambit simply did not work as well for me.

Visually, Blossoms of Power clearly aims for elegance. While certain locations such as the East Palace flower garden are genuinely beautiful, along with the colorful fireworks sequences, the overall presentation never feels particularly groundbreaking. Most of the cinematography falls into familiar territory. Even so, the production consistently looks polished and luxurious enough that I still appreciated the effort. The soundtrack also deserves praise. None of the songs have stayed on my playlist afterwards, but within the drama itself they always elevate the mood of each scene perfectly.

As the story approached its conclusion, however, the writing once again fell back into its old habit of leaving important questions unanswered. Prince Xin became the biggest emotional roller coaster in the entire series. I disliked him, sympathised with him, hated him again, then somehow liked him once more. While his final revelation attempts to tie everything together, it ultimately feels more convenient than convincing. It almost seems as though the writers decided his redemption at the last minute simply because every major character needed closure. The Emperor, on the other hand, genuinely surprised me. He feels remarkably human, and saying anything more would spoil one of the better aspects of the story.

The ending itself also feels like the writers handing viewers a neatly wrapped gift while quietly hoping nobody asks too many questions. I appreciate that the drama chose a happy ending, I really do, but it never fully explains what actually happened to Hua Yong. His future after his son becomes Emperor also remains rather vague. Perhaps the bedtime story he tells his son reflects his desire to live peacefully among ordinary people while continuing to care for them from afar. That interpretation makes emotional sense, but practically speaking, I still have many questions. Is he simply going to remain inside the palace while pretending politics no longer exists? Your guess is honestly as good as mine.

Overall, Blossoms of Power is a decent watch that had me alternating between smiling, cringing, and scratching my head. One episode had me hiding behind a pillow from second hand embarrassment, while the next had me pausing to question the logic of what I had just watched. Watching it as an ongoing series with one or two episodes each day probably helped smooth out some of those frustrations. At the end of the day, this is neither an outstanding masterpiece nor a disappointing failure. It sits comfortably somewhere in the middle. If you're willing to embrace its shameless romance, overlook a few logic gaps, and accept that not every mystery will receive an answer, Blossoms of Power still offers an entertaining journey. Sometimes a flower blooms beautifully even when its roots are a little messy.

A Drama That Actually Made Me Write a Review — Key to the Phoenix Heart Stole My Heart

I don't write reviews. I watch, I enjoy, I move on. But Key to the Phoenix Heart is a different story, this one made me sit down and put my feelings into words, because it deserves it.

Let me just say it plainly: everything about this drama was perfect. The story, the chemistry, the acting, but most of all, the cast. I need to talk about them one by one, because they are the real reason this drama hit me so hard.

Hou Minghao as Xiao Wuyi — my first drama of his, and what an introduction

This is literally the first drama I've ever watched with Hou Minghao, and I am completely blown away. I already knew I liked him as an actor going in, but nothing prepared me for how good he actually is. As Xiao Wuyi, he carries this cold, commanding presence one moment and then completely guts you with vulnerability the next. His emotions felt so real, so effortless like he wasn't acting at all, just living the character. Every look, every silence, every small shift in his expression said more than a page of dialogue could. I'm officially a fan for life after this, and I cannot wait to see what else he's done.

Ai Mi as Xie Jiayu — from supporting star to a lead I adore

I already loved Ai Mi from The Double, where she played a supporting role. But seeing her carry a main lead this time, with this much confidence and this much heart, made me love her even more. She brought so much emotion and life into Xie Jiayu, she's sharp, she's soft when it matters, and she completely owns every scene she's in. And on top of all that talent, she is just so unbelievably cute. Watching her grow into this role over the course of the drama was honestly one of my favorite parts of the whole watch.

Riley Wang as Li Mao — the performance that kept me guessing

And then there's Li Mao. Genuinely one of the best supporting performances in the drama for me. I spent the whole time trying to figure him out is he actually plotting against Xiao Wuyi, or is it all just an act? That's exactly the mark of a great performance: I couldn't tell, and that uncertainty kept me hooked. Every scene with him added this extra layer of tension because I simply couldn't trust my read on him. Amazing work.

The rest of the cast

The supporting leads overall did such a wonderful job holding up the world around our main couple. Nothing felt like filler, every character added something to the bigger picture, and it made the whole drama feel rich and complete.

From laughing to crying

This drama took me through every emotion possible. One moment I was laughing, the next I was crying, and honestly, that's the biggest proof of how well it was made. It confirmed something for me: a drama doesn't need intimate scenes or kissing scenes to become a hit. All it needs is a good story, solid acting, and actors who truly immerse themselves into their characters. Key to the Phoenix Heart proved that a well-told story and genuine performances are more than enough to make an audience feel everything.

Final thoughts

I went in expecting to enjoy this drama. I did not expect to fall completely in love with it. The lead chemistry, the performances, the way every actor, main or supporting brought their full self into their character... it all came together perfectly. Key to the Phoenix Heart is a must-watch, and it's easily one of the best casts I've seen in a long time.

? Green Tea ML ?

Saw short clips of this drama on YouTube and decided to give it a try. Usually, it takes me at least 2–3 episodes to decide whether a drama is worth continuing, but this one was an instant go from the very first episode, which is pretty rare for me.

This is my first time watching a drama starring He Yu, and I think he did a great job portraying Xiao Huayong. Huayong quickly became my favourite character because it's rare to see such a "green tea" and shameless male lead in a full-length Chinese drama instead of a short drama. The way he would shamelessly act weak and faint at any moment was absolutely hilarious 😂

Beyond his green tea and playful personality, Huayong is also incredibly intelligent. I liked how he managed to keep both his martial arts abilities and his palace intelligence network hidden without arousing anyone's suspicion. He wasn't just pretending to be weak but he was always several steps ahead of everyone else.

Ep 31 was probably my favourite. Huayong was genuinely happy about becoming a father, yet at the same time felt guilty for leaving Xi He to deal with the aftermath alone. Despite knowing that he would never get the chance to watch his child grow up, he had already planned everything, even thinking about their education and choosing a teacher up until the age of fifteen. That scene was both heartwarming and heartbreaking 🥹

I also loved watching Xi He gradually change from someone who was cold, guarded, and scheming into someone who truly loved Huayong. One of my favourite moments was when she said that if their child were a son, she hoped he would grow up to be like his father. To me, that's one of the greatest compliments a wife could give her husband.

My biggest dissatisfaction was how Huayong returned in ep 36. I wish ep 33–36 had shown how he faked his death, survived the poison, and recovered before making his return. Since Xi He is supposed to be highly intelligent, I also expected her to notice that something felt off during the funeral and start suspecting that Huayong was still alive. That would've made the reunion much more satisfying.

I also felt that the Fifth Prince's obsession with Xi He dragged on for too long in the final episodes. While the drama explained that he was willing to die for her, those scenes became repetitive and a little frustrating to watch. I was also hoping the Ninth Prince would end up with Yingruo.

Overall, I really enjoyed this drama, and Xiao Huayong is definitely the highlight for me. I loved how he balanced his playful, shameless side with his calm, intelligent, and serious side. He's such a refreshing male lead, and I'll definitely be checking out more of He Yu's dramas after this.

Underdog drama with well deserved high praise and ratings on Douban

This drama landed on my watchlist after one of these Tiktoks about underrated shows sparked my interest.
Zero regrets. Quite the opposite.
I finished it a few days ago and I am still in a mood, where I want to climb on a rooftop and tell through a megaphone everyone with functional ears, how surprisingly amazing that drama was and that they should hurry to watch it, because it deserves so much more recognition.

Is it one of these dramas, where everything is perfect?
No.
It obviously operated on a small budget and it didn't come with an idol cast to drew in the viewership by names alone.
But that's the only draw back of this show.

While it starts a little slow and takes its time to introduce the characters, if you give it a moment, then the unfolding mystery will get you hooked and the storytelling just keeps serving until the finale.
Not one dull moment in between. 👏👏👏👏

The plot is plotting with unexpected twists, which will have you guessing, what to expect next, nearly until the end. With a bunch of intriguing protagonists, whose character development and growing friendship was satisfying to watch. You will fall in love with these guys and root hard for them to succeed.
It is really a unique mix of mystery/sci-fi/wuxia drama.
In short:
Story top.
Acting top.
OST top.
The smaller budget got sometimes more obvious during the CGI scenes. But that didn't take from the overall experience.

Perhaps one word to the male lead.
In a more conventional drama he might be better suited as a supporting actor. But here it works out.
All leading characters were evenly written into the story and felt as important main characters.
I loved it.
I highly recommend it.

Historia básica y predecible

Como en todo drama largo la historia de ratos se torna lenta y aburrida.
La historia de amor principal es lo que menos me gustó. Si no fuera por el actor principal y el secundario son excelente actores sería un desastre de principio a fin. La protagonista desarrolla su personaje con una sobre actuación increíble ni los gestos son creíbles, su cara de sorpresa, tristeza y felicidad son la misma, una actuación para el olvido.
Las historias secundarias son atractivas y te llaman a querer seguir sabiendo de ellos.
Las actuaciones y personajes de Yoon Hyun-min, Jung IL-woo, Shin Su-Hyun, Park Jung-yeon y Son Sang-yeon fueron por lo único que la vi hasta el final.

Avevo semplicemente voglia di vedere una Forcebook

Ho scelto questo BL non so nemmeno perchè, avevo guardato il trailer, ma guardandolo ho capito che è tutta un’altra storia. é molto semplice come trama, ma nonostante questo io amo sempre le storie d’amore dove si innamorano da bambini, e successivamente si rincontrano da grandi che il loro amore è ancora vivo. Sotto questo aspetto ho trovato veramente che il BL rispecchiasse l’amicizia che c’è tra Force e Book.
(p.s. amo tantissimo il modo in cui Book guarda Force, perchè prima guarda gli occhi, poi sempre, ma dico sempreeeee le labbra!!)
Non avevo guardato il numero di episodi prima di iniziare la serie, infatti me ne aspettavo 12, e trovavo fossero veramente troppi, ma in realtà sono 10, e credo siano proprio perfetti.
Nonostante abbia detto che la storia sia banale, il fatto che Theo sia per metà francese la rende unica (io essendo italiana mi ha fatto molto ridere sentire Book parlare in francese hahha, comunque è stato molto bravo, respect).
Vabbè fatta questa premessa inizio a commentare un pò i personaggi (il cast mi fa morire dal ridere, sono così random, letteralmente questo era il provino per Only Friends: Dream On)

Parlando dei 4 Enchante… detto sinceramente erano proprio insopportabili; Phupa era insistente e troppo rompicazzo, Wayo è super acido, gentile solo quando pare a lui per convenienza, Natee sembrava un pazzo stupratore, forse l’unico decente era Saifa in fin dei conti lui era gentile, ma li ho odiati tutti e 4 perchè volevano solo sfruttarlo a Theo.
Visto che sono in vena di insulti, ma vogliamo parlare del fatto che Wayo ha detto di mentire sull’essere Enchante per colpa di Ton?! ma allora sei uno stronzo! vai a liberarti della tua colpa riversancola al tuo amico?! ognuno è responsabile delle proprie scelte cretino! se lo hai ingannato è solo colpa tua! (a quel poveretto di Boom comunque non danno mai un personaggio simpatico da interpretare hahahaha scusate ma è così)


 Akk best green flag ever, l’ho letteralmente amato come si preoccupasse per Theo e come si ricordasse tutte le cose che si erano promessi quando erano bambini, mi è piaciuto anche che fosse geloso, però al punto giusto dai hahaha, ma poi vogliamo parlare di quanto flirtassero questi due?! ogni cosa che dicevano era un flirt, e apprezzo davvero come Theo gli tenesse testa senza lasciare momenti di imbarazzo tra loro. Comunque il bacio che si sono dati a ep 8 ha fatto capire benissimo quanto si desideravano.
Ad ogni modo.. non  mi aspettavo proprio che Enchante fosse Theo, avrei pensato più ad Akk, oppure a Natee, siccome era in biblioteca con lui quando ha scritto nel libro.
(p.s. ho sperato molto nella ship Natee e Tan, ma non hanno fatto più di tanto uffaaaa)

Je vais sûrement me faire des ennemis... mais je n'ai pas aimé...

Avec "The Red Sleeve", on suit Yi San, un prince héritier destiné à devenir roi, et Seong Deok Im, une dame de cour qui chérit sa liberté plus que tout. Ici, on est clairement sut une romance où les plus grands obstacles ne sont ni les complots ni les rivalités... mais le poids de la couronne elle-même 👑🥹.

Je vais être totalement honnête... si j'ai lancé ce drama, c'était avant tout pour vivre LA grande histoire d'amour dont tout le monde parle ❤️. Avec une note aussi folle sur MDL, je m'attendais vraiment à être emportée par cette romance. Malheureusement... ça ne s'est jamais produit 😕

Pourtant, sur le papier, tout avait de quoi me plaire... Entre lui, qui est prêt à tout pour rester auprès de la femme qu'il aime, et elle qui refuse de renoncer à sa liberté pour devenir une femme du roi. Franchement, je trouvais ce conflit hyper intéressant, est totalement cohérent avec l'époque.

Le problème, c'est qu'une fois leurs motivations bien établies, j'ai eu l'impression que le drama tournait constamment autour du même dilemme 😅. Yi San essaie de la convaincre, Deok Im refuse, ils souffrent chacun de leur côté... puis tout recommence. Au bout d'un moment, je ne me demandais même plus s'ils s'aimaient, puisque ça ne faisait aucun doute, mais j'attendais que leur relation prenne enfin une nouvelle direction... 😬

J'ai aussi eu du mal avec leur dynamique... Je comprends parfaitement que Yi San soit prisonnier de son rang et des règles de Joseon, mais certaines de ses décisions m'ont davantage donné l'impression qu'il cherchait à garder Deok Im près de lui par la "contrainte" plutôt qu'à réellement gagner son cœur. À l'inverse, Deok Im répète vouloir préserver sa liberté, tout en refusant plusieurs occasions de quitter définitivement le palais. J'ai compris son tiraillement... mais à force de revenir encore et encore sur cette même hésitation, j'ai fini par ressentir davantage de frustration que d'émotion... 🤗

Au final, j'ai été plus investie dans les intrigues secondaires que dans la romance 😅. Par exemple, j'ai beaucoup aimé tout l'arc autour des dames de cour et de leur mystérieuse organisation des "Fées". C'est ce qui m'a le plus intriguée, même si j'ai trouvé dommage que l'organisation disparaisse aussi vite une fois Yi San monté sur le trône.

Par contre, Deok Ro m'a laissée beaucoup plus perplexe 🤔. Dès le début, je me doutais qu'il finirait par trahir Yi San avec son mensonge concernant l'histoire des pages du livre interdit lorsqu'ils étaient enfants... Mais, je n'ai jamais vraiment réussi à comprendre ce qui le poussait à agir ainsi. J'avais souvent l'impression que ses décisions servaient davantage le scénario que son propre personnage.

J'ai également eu un peu de mal avec la manière dont le drama gère le temps ⏳. Les années passent, parfois même les décennies... mais les personnages semblent à peine évoluer. Certains événements importants arrivent presque de nulle part, ce qui m'a plusieurs fois donné l'impression que le récit avançait davantage parce qu'il le fallait que de façon vraiment naturelle.

Et malheureusement... même la fin ne m'a pas réconciliée avec le drama 🥲. J'ai attendu jusqu'au dernier épisode le fameux moment où j'allais enfin comprendre pourquoi cette romance bouleverse autant de monde... mais il n'est jamais arrivé. Je regardais leur histoire avec intérêt, mais je ne l'ai jamais vraiment vécue avec eux... Je suis restée spectatrice du début à la fin, alors que j'espérais avoir le cœur complètement brisé en arrivant au générique 🤷🏼‍♀️

Pour autant, je reconnais que le jeu des acteurs est excellent et la réalisation est soignée. En revanche, les décors et les costumes ne m'ont pas particulièrement marquée, surtout quand je les compare à d'autres sageuks qui m'ont beaucoup plus impressionnée visuellement...

Au final, je ressors surtout avec un énorme sentiment de frustration 😔. J'avais vraiment envie d'aimer "The Red Sleeve"... J'avais envie de comprendre pourquoi il est considéré comme l'un des meilleurs sageuks romantiques de ces dernières années... mais ça n'a tout simplement pas matché avec moi.

Bref, je comprends totalement qu'il ait bouleversé énormément de monde ❤️. Mais moi, cette fois, je suis complètement passée à côté... Comme quoi, même les dramas les plus acclamés ne nous touchent pas tous de la même manière... 😊✌🏻
