I was liking it but it kinda lost its wholeness. 1) I still cannot pinpoint when he did fall in love with her; 2) the lead actor looks good on screen but his acting is sort of forced - like the when he smiles, it is like asking somebody to say "cheese";; 3) the director was showing that Mr. BLack's team had it all together and yet there were allot of like unnecessary mistakes they made as a team as they make the revenge; 4) the 5 years in the plot seems unrealistic, and is not cohesive to the whole story (I'm trying not to divulge the story here); 5) the revenge/twist - I've had enough of it... They could have ended this at 16 eps; 6) the evil guy was first very composed in the beginning and then at the end they made him laugh the "evil laugh" , like totally out of character; 7) this guy got out in 2 years of being in prison and they go back to the couple ( it was obvious, it was not even in the same time frame)

This is still watchable, but when it comes to crimes, laws, the story has to be really tight. The twists in the story was pretty good, but I can only take so much "twisting" before I begin to just say, just get on with it... So, yes, I do have gripes about it but I have seen worst dramas.

As revenge/melodramas go, Goodbye Mr. Black was ok. I gave this a higher score because of the unusual birth secret twist and because people got what they deserved. I did get irritated with the ending though. I wish I could post spoilers because I have some things to say about this drama. Anyway, the plot is pretty good, but the story seemed to go around in circles at times. There were too many needless characters. I did like how there was focus on the main characters love story as convoluted as it may have been.

I think the acting is what makes this drama worth watching. I would have given up on this drama at the start if it weren't for the good actors. I didn't feel much chemistry, but they made it work. I'm a huge Kim Kang Woo fan and it was fun to watch him play the "bad guy".

The music was good.

I will never rewatch this.

If you like revenge dramas, then this one is not a bad watch.

Well, I hate to write bad reviews about a drama, but I was really excited for this one and kinda left me disaponted.
I watched because Moon Chae Won was such a nice actress in "Innocent Man" that I was sure that was going to be a nice drama. However, I couldn't feel anything between the main leads, and I am really sorry about that. I found myself cheering for the second male lead the hole drama.
Soundtrack wasn't my thing, The story had everything to be good, but I think it was so much that it became confusing.
For me, the only strong point was the acting: the evil Min Sun Jae was awesome (looked really like a crazy person), the main leads had also a great acting.
If you are really curious, just watch it, some parts are enjoyable.

Hearing about Moon Chae Won's casting offer for Goodbye Mr. Black made me happy. Having enjoyed her previous works I was looking forward to her new drama, as it has been 3 years since her last one 'Good Doctor'. Lined up for fall 2015 after 'The Village - Achiara's Secret', it was suddenly being dropped by SBS in favor of another drama, Remember (ft. Yoo Seung Ho & Park Min Young). There was a lot of uncertainty whether Goodbye Mr. Black would still be broadcasted after being cut. Eventually MBC picked up the drama and scheduled it for a premiere in March 2016. A small screen comeback for Moon Chae Won was finally in the works.

The story is based of a manhwa named Goodbye Mr. Black, that takes its inspiration from the novel 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. Searching for this story led me to a lot of positive reviews. With a cast of well known actors including Lee Jin Wook, Song Jae Rim and more, the future looked bright. But as always you never know how things will turn out. A revenge themed serie is usually about the main character outsmarting his enemies and punishing them to pay them back for his pain. Love is often thrown into the mix as it is something where the main character gets his strength from to endure difficult situations. Lacking a real love story could have done wonders because it got more annoying than it contributed to the quality of the serie. After a while everything became predictable and felt dragged. Halfway through it picked up a little bit, not long before going back to it's usual pattern. You get the feeling the story is going nowhere. The extension of 4 episodes didn't make it better. They could have wrapped this up in 16 episodes. Having watched some of the actors & actresses past works, this is probably one of the most poorly written drama's in their career. Seeing their filmography they have surely acted in better ones. Lee Jin Wook's character Cha Ji Won is a smart & loyal person, that would consider taking risks in order for him to succeed. A very optimistic person. Making a return as Mr. Black after being framed by his best friend Min Sun Jae (Kim Kang Woo) he seems to have lost some of his composure & intelligence. It was like seeing him smiling and punching himself in the face multiple times although knowing it hurts. Moon Chae Won did an amazing job in both 'Innocent Man' & 'Good Doctor'. In 'Goodbye Mr. Black' her character 'Kim Swan' fell short. She was running all over the place (looking for her identity). Being the female lead you expect her to do a better job supporting Mr. Black in his quest for revenge but she had her own problems to deal with. It only lead to dragging him down. Obviously developing feelings for each other is a bad idea when planning your revenge, seeing how enemies could use her against him. In these kind of series, it always bound to happen. Her chemistry with Lee Jin Wook isn't bad yet it isn't comparable to her pairings with Song Joong Ki & Joo Won. However Lee Jin Wook is not at fault as I liked his acting in 'The Time We Were Not In Love' where he formed a nice love line with Ha Ji Won. Kim Tae Woo's portrayal of his characters in 'That Winter, The Wind Blows' & 'God's Gift - 14 Days' were great. This is probably one of his more forgettable roles since he didn't have as much influence as he had in his former works. The whole cast fell victim to a poorly written drama which is a pity because the reference material and cast were promising. Moon Hee Jung has better works on her résumé, for example: 'Missing You' (ft. Park Yoo Chun, Yoon Eun Hye & Yoo Seung Ho).

Goodbye Mr. Black wasn't atrocious but decent would have been too praising. It was okay at best. While the 4 OST's were not bad the lack of good (variety) background music, that captures the feeling of the serie, didn't do the drama any good. All that remains is an average drama with a lot of repetitive looping and predictable plot lines. Sharing the same day- & timeslot as 'Descendants of The Sun' when premiering adds up to the unfortunate stuff happening to the drama, as many people preferred the latter for a very good reason. A fair share of bad luck you might say.

Revenge is sweet when done right but that's certainly not the case with Goodbye Mr. Black.

Story:
Maybe I am the odd man out, but I really love this drama. I have to agree that the pacing and story progression is off at times and it can get real awkward watching and asking yourself "How come we came here? Or how come that is happening or this is happening?" But at the heart of it all and why I continue to watch the story is perhaps the fact I simply love "Black and Swan".

Acting/Cast:
Lee Jin Wook acting is an okay for me and its not that he can't act, its rather as i mentioned previously, the pacing and awkwardness that I attribute more so to the directing. However, I do love the slow progression of Cha Ji Won into "Black". Despite the awkwardness I see Lee Jin Wok doing a great job in portraying that loss of innocence, trust, and focus on love (relationships including romance and friendship) into Black a man deeply scarred, jaded, and out and about for revenge for the loss of his father and search for his sister.

While my girl, Moon Chae Won, I have nothing left to say for her as every since Shining Inheritance I fell for her acting and it wasn't deterred by the least in this drama. Throughout the constant moaning and groaning about her character's appearance, I fell in love with the spunky, kind, upfront (blunt), and loyal Kaya or Seu Wan (Swan) and thought (so far) she has stayed true to her character as being someone who fights tooth and nail for someone that she loves, dependable, and is loyal.

Also Song Jae Rim, this is my first drama watching him but something about his smile and the consistency of his character and the fact that he is a second lead that hasn't annoyed the heck out of me. He comes off as a tsundere in the begining but he never changes to

Music:
Maybe because I have consistently blocked it out because after two or three episodes of the same love song, cute, but almost twelve episodes of the same love song at a certain point does become tiring. But at a certain point the song does change.

Rewatch:
I would re-watch this solely for the Swan and Black scenes, but also because of the hi-jinks of the supporting characters as they were hilarious during moments of intense scenes or when I just finish cursing out the stupidity of a character or when the evil guys piss me off from no end and makes me contemplate slamming my tablet on the floor from their nonsense.

Overall, this drama suffered in the beginning because of directing, a revenge plot that made no sense in the direction it was heading (which still has me wondering why? How come?) Because based on the synopsis I thought we were going full in with Black and Swan disguised as a married couple mingling in destroying his best friend and his ex-fiance for their betrayal while at the same time saving his sister and falling in love and being conflicting in destroying and losing himself as he went further went with his revenge plot but at the same time falling for Swan etc...

Instead we got a revenge plot where the revenger outed himself to the revengees (does that make sense???) in less than 30 minutes after (well we have a time period gap...but you get what I'm saying). But nevertheless, although I didn't get the official story that I wanted (or believed based on the synopsis) , I still highly recommend this drama because at the heart of it all it is a really, really great drama.

Alexandre Dumas must have died one more time!!!

Bad, really bad.
A revenge drama where almost everyone was forgiven and redeemed...
STORY - did not enjoy the story. Lots of twist and turns between a soft person that seeks revenge and 2 uninteresting villains. The revenge plot, the money, company, etc is very bad.
Swan is interesting, Ma Ri is laughable...
ACTING - most of the characters seemed forced...
MUSIC - one song over and over... Do not like it...
REWATCH - never!

OVERALL - as a revenge drama it is not good. As a romance it is worst. Do not recognize any good in this.

SPOILERS SPOILERS!!!!!

Happy ending and forgiveness for almost everybody?!?! I man loses his family, father, sister, bride... And much more! And still talks to the guy that done it like a friend? And his ex-bride stays with him?! The guy that almost killed his sister and was there when his father was killed?
I love happy endings, but this is too much!

I loved this drama. I've been watching dramas since 2012 or thereabouts and I've seen a lot of them over the years. I'd put this one off based on the bad reviews, especially related to the comments about the lack of chemistry between the leads. To be honest, I thought the chemistry between Black and Swan was GLORIOUS.

As a revenge drama, this is a bit shaky because Black, frankly, is too passionate for an ice cold revenge scheme. He cares too much about multiple people, even when he's trying to be a broody Batman type. Swan was amazing as a survivor, much smarter and more savvy than heroines are usually allowed to be in dramas.

I was fully captivated from the beginning and I loved the whole thing from start to finish. The ending made me happy, and I teared up more than once. Bottom line: watch this for the relationships and the feels. You won't be sorry.

Over dramatic plot and draggy romance but watchable not that bad

I came to watch this drama in 2022 after watching Bulgasal drama ,, the male lead caught my eye in bulgasal and I loved him there and this drama at first glance seemed ok ..... I liked the synopsis but when I actually began to watch it ,, started to get bothered by a lot of things
first of all this drama was released 2016 the golden year for amazing korean dramas ,, this one definitely the weakest of them all ....... the story is too dramatic and unrealistic in any way .
The classic novel count de Monte Christo sort of story ,,, and how he escaped death twice or may be three times was ridiculous not humanly possible
The medical procedures in this drama are laughable ,, nothing medically accurate in this drama and there are so many sick scenes for Angsty purposes and serious injuries ,,, the male lead got shot then was treated as if it was nothing ,, then got blown up then drowned and also was treated as if it was nothing then he had an aneurism in his brain kept fighting and inserting himself in so many conflicts any normal brain would have been hurt not with an aneurism ,, his sister was pushed through terrace and fell from second floor and escaped death with blind eyes ,, nerve damages that has never been treated and she got treatment ,, him getting beaten up a lot while in this health condition and every time he's okey after scanning his brain ,, even at the last episode there were too much drama for no reason at all
The writer made over used melodramatic situations that it became overrated and ridiculous the last episode was absolutely illogical ,, why in the world did the female lead went to confront the evil guy without backup as if she's committing suicide and yet the male lead didn't even got out of the operating room also
How The doctors left the compass in his hands while in surgery and he was clutching on it ,, isn't the operating room supposed to be sanitized and non personal belongings with the patient ,, he's supposed to be naked in the surgery ,, they left the compass in his hands and he was holding it tight ,,, How ,, he was practically brain dead and under general Anastasia
part from all that medical nonsense ,, the villains were like from cartoons or something that old guy and his crazy laugh it was hilarious ,, evil laugh hahahahaha
the female lead did a lot of stupid moved and I mean a lot ,, the love triangle existed to make us feel sorry for her co worker who loved her ,, he was really good character
overall I didn't enjoy this drama that much to be honest even if it was fictional all of it ,, it wasn't that good not like Bulgasal at all ,, of course no comparison between them at all

A atuação do elenco é impressionante. Musica muito linda apesar do meu coreano bastante limitado.
