Award winner for wrecking viewers' heart
I watched this with my roommate in the room and she had to witness me crying tears and snot and all thanks to it.Amazing amazing story. I have nothing else to say. The title itself explained everything and I felt like I went in unprepared, wrecking me completely and I feel like I really did cry a litre of tears. And the acting was superb as well. Nothing further needed to be said. A constant rewatch again and again whenever I want to torture myself.

1 Litre of Tears appreciation post
Wow, just wow what an experience.I’ve been into Japanese media for a long time but I’m only now getting into Dramas/live action, this is my third, I watched you are the apple of my eye like 8 years ago and it was good and I watched Drawing Closer last week and it was amazing.
I’m honestly blown away by good this was, practically perfect, the acting was sooo on point, I honestly can’t imagine watching this with a different cast (which I know isn’t really true but some actors bring their roles to life in such a way it feels true), the soundtrack was phenomenal, “Kanayuki” makes me cry every time and probably will for a long time, “only human” was so fitting and beautiful, “sangatsu kokonoka” also breaks my heart, especially the live version from THAT scene, the directing was great and the overall tone I thought was perfect.
Something I love is that they didn’t shy away in sharing this experience, sure, they likely held back a little and added some stuff to make it watchable, this is a drama after all and if it was his depressing for 99% of the run time that would be tough, but i think they still did such an amazing job of conveying what she went through and her genuine experiences, i can relate to Aya in some of her feelings and thoughts, she really resonated with me, so the fact this is a true story just makes it all the more heartbreaking, the pictures at the end of episodes, quotes such as “but… what I really wanted them to say was “Aya please don’t go” “ these are things that broke my heart and will stick with me forever.
There were soooo many memorable scenes, her goodbye speech and send off from school was amazing but I think my very favourite scene was Ako getting angry and defending her on her behalf, I tear up just thinking about it.
I’d love some recommendations based on this show! something that you think is better or more sad.
Honestly this was a once in a life time media experience, even tho I’m still so new to dramas, I reallyyyy don’t think this will ever be topped for me, it’s probably the saddest thing I’ve ever watched (and I watch so much sad stuff) I was honestly crying for 11 episodes straight, 1 litre was an understatement. I never thought a jdrama would become my all time favourite piece of media but here are…
Rest in peace Aya. Thank you for sharing your experience, 38 years later and your life is still having an impact on people and helping them.

Walls Are Comming Toward You!
You're imprisoned in a room. This is not nice, but can be tolerable in some situations, however the real disaster is that the walls are coming toward you gradually, so your body is gonna crushed sooner or later. In other words, time is your main enemy. Then how can you enjoy this situation? How can you do anything meaningful? How can you care about others, especially those who are outside such room?
Aya, her family and the Japanese culture tell you how!

One of the most heart-breaking dramas ever and one of the earlier japanese dramas i have watched, "One Litre of Tears" delivers a sad love story between two teenagers Aya and her newfound friendship with Haruto which blossoms to a bittersweet love. I remember crying rivers to this story...Now after all this years i still remember how good it felt to be hurt by this drama.
Its a must-Watch if you are into classics and tearjerkers!

Get your tissues ready
By far one of the saddest dramas I've ever watched. From episode one I started to cry a river and was sniffing through out the whole thing. Truly moving story that teaches you to be grateful for the little things you take advantage of in life. Warning it's a sad ending, I was hoping the doctor or Aso finds a cure for the disease but sadly not which is the reality in life. I love how its based off a real story which is so inspiring. Sadly in real life Aya did not have a Aso, he was added to the drama :(((Actors did a great job showing what it is like to have the disease. Ost is awesome. I'll definitely rewatch this drama if I need a good cry by myself.

So excuse me in advance but i had to do it, this drama is just a straight uo masterpiece.
I went into this drama with a quite closed mind.
Like 5 minutes in i was already confronted with what drama this will be about.
And i knew instantly that this drama would bring me litres of tears.
This drama thought me so much.
It thought me to embrace life and stop complaining about really silly little things.
It really inspired me to be a better person.
To be the best i can be.
The acting was simply phenomenal, i believed every single word any of the cast spoke.
Everything was shot and filmed so well.
In my opinion there were no flaws other than the fact i had to cry every single episode.
I would encourage all of you to watch this drama.
Not only because of the story but mainly because of the message.
Rest in peace dear aya.. your life has inspired me so much and i hope you are in a better place now <3
Sorry if my grammar wasnt all that well.

This is the show that actually forced me to write a review because it's too good that I don't want others to miss.
It's a story about 15yr old girl Aya. That's all I need to say. But, mark my words you gonna feel the feels each episode. And you gonna cry like baby in some episodes. I never felt this emotional in my entire life. If you are curious, yes I have cried 1 litre.
If you're thinking about should i watch this j-drama or not, Please Watch it but make sure there are tissues by ur side while watching it ^v^
You won't regret watching it.
I finished it by watching it whole day today. . . I cried the whole day that my head n eyes hurts so much...
Ok I'm gonna leave now.

Also it's my first drama I finished.
I have never ever cried this much over a show in my life, it's even sadder that's it based on a true story,
It's such of a impactful show I would highly recommend watching it. Why did I put the re-watch value down so low? I don't wanna go through the pain watching it. The music was great, some songs get played over and over but still great, the ending song though is great, the acting felt like real life.

a story of many tears
First off, I would like to say thank you to high school Japanese class that threw this classic on us as a way to not only aid our learning to Japanese vocabulary and culture, but also a way to make us aware and appreciative of many things. When I tell you it was like waterworks in class during every episode, to the point where the teacher made us watch it at home instead (HAHHA). Thinking back it was a moment in life where I was so confident, comfortable, and reassured. That must have been how Aya felt too right? Before her own legs swept her off her feet and onto the hard, cold ground.
Terrible and traumatized....was my initial takeaway from the drama. That if there were truly any entities up there or down there...they were terribly fickle and people that clearly did things on a whim. Why? Because as I watched this very sweet girl that had all of life going for her...the realization that she is a real person that had to spend her days waiting for her ability to talk, walk, and be the teenager that everyone else her age was able to be.....was heart wrenching...to say the least. Then to realize that the sweet Haruto that took her out of the pouring rain and was a strengthening presence for her...didn't exist in real life....was honestly so foundationally damaging for me as a child.
But beyond all the sadness and depression that is her....eventual decline into death., it was also a story of hope, watching her fight her way through life with the illness as she found the strength to drag herself to school. I...would still be in bed...let alone walking up all those stairs.
I like the family. The warmth and bickering she was happy to be surrounded with during health...as well as the supportive and hesitation that comes with the news of her illness. That it takes time to come around, to accept and to finally resolve...to be there for her. The differences social pressures make to the already tested and strained bonds.
It was..like the title... truly a story of many tears.

A Heartbreaking Yet Inspiring True Story
One Liter of Tears is not just a drama—it’s an emotional journey that lingers long after the final episode. Based on a true story, it portrays the struggles of a young girl diagnosed with a degenerative illness, and her unyielding spirit in the face of adversity. The writing captures both the heartbreaking realities of her condition and the small, beautiful moments of courage and love that shine through.Erika Sawajiri’s performance is exceptional—vulnerable yet strong, she brings authenticity that makes every moment resonate. The supporting cast, especially her family, adds layers of warmth and humanity, making the story not just about illness but also about resilience, love, and acceptance. The music is equally powerful, weaving emotion into every scene.
Though it’s painful to watch at times, One Liter of Tears is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. It’s a series that teaches empathy, gratitude, and the value of every single day.

One of the best dramas to watch if you want to learn how to appreciate life more.
This drama is indeed heartbreaking because it does not only make you cry but also, it can make your heart broken in pieces because of how hard Aya's life is. The story of this drama is well executed and it felt realistic to the extent that it went over to the top when it comes to audience impact. Aside from that, the acting of each characters will make you connect with them even if you are just watching them do their respective roles/parts.In fact, I liked some of the songs featured in this drama such as "Konayuki", "Sangatsu Kokonoka", and "Only Human". Erika Sawajiri did a great job in acting the most and that commendation is also applicable to Ryo Nishikido. Their love story is actually inspiring because Haruto was always there for his love, Aya most especially, when she needs him the most deep inside.
This drama taught me a lot of life lessons and that includes learning to live my life to the fullest according to what I want without regrets. I also learned to accept who I am now and there is no point for me to dwell myself in the past and learn to appreciate life even more now.
Before watching this drama, please prepare a lot of tissues or a handkerchief because this drama will really make you cry.
