the comparisons to the reply series, especially 1988, are very apt. this is both a good and a bad thing - the things that keep the reply series firmly at the top of my favourites list are all here (family, friendships, first love, the bittersweetness of growing up, nostalgia), but so are a lot of the frustrations (dude, just talk to her! it's nice that you're being considerate of your friend's feelings but she's allowed to make her own choice).

i fell in love with the first few episodes, but found myself enjoying it less as it went on. the tone shifted wildly from funny and lighthearted and sweet to just sad. sad isn't a bad thing, but i wish they had kept some of the humour and sweetness while they dealt with the heavier topics. the plot also seemed to be spinning its wheels for half the episodes, covering the same ground multiple times (so many 'i was just about to confess but didn't because she started talking about li yu again' moments!). i wish the plot had kept moving and covered more time, instead of getting so bogged down.

overall this drama has a lot of positives - the characters are strongly written and acted, the cast have great chemistry and there are so many moments that hit you right in the feelings - but i couldn't help feeling let down by the tonal shift in the latter episodes.

First of all, this series is a must watch, I’ve watched many high school romance like a love so beautiful, love 020 but i personally love when we were young the most.

The main male lead is acted by minghao which i found he did an extremely good job as hua biao and i immediately fell in love with his character. The chemistry between the male and female lead were awesome and there were many funny and cute moments between them. The second male lead will also make you fall in love with him and he is always taking good care of the main female lead while suppressing his own feelings for her knowing that she likes the main male lead. I love that it is set in the 90s and it brings back many nostalgic feelings and shows a different way of life of teenagers back in the 90s compared to the 20s. I feel that it gives me a new and fresh perspective of the 90s

As for the OST, it is sung by the main male lead called young people don’t hurt people and it sounds so good it has been on repeat ever since I finished this series. Neo has an amazing voice that you will fall in love with. Kudos to the production team and definitely hoping for a season 2! :)

It has that nostalgic feeling that makes you feel very connected to it. Made me cry, laugh so hard, smile and sad all throughout. There were many moments that definitely pulled my heartstrings and made me feel something :(( this series definitely hits right through you and feels home.

It shows the reality we all face when we were young, the choices we soon have to make, struggles in our youth, the value of friendship, family and young love. How pure and innocent love is. I love how they ventured with different kinds of love. Not just the romantic love we often see with the main roles. It also has that gentle subtlety in each character, how they portrait a specific emotion and that raw feeling they have inside. This has the touch of everything, trust me!

I also loved how genuinely funny this series was HAHAHA it has a lot of humor. And don't get me wrong, this ain't the type of 'funny' that is forced. I will miss the Five Flying Bicycles :(( It made me miss my teenage life, indeed it was one for the books. Season2, i cant wait for you ❤️

I gave the rewatch value an 8.5 because most parts of the story for me were moments I didn't anticipate it happening. Like the pure innocent me wasn't aware and sure of what I'm gonna be feeling next then all of sudden I'm caught crying or sad or laughing hard. It's like a rollercoaster of emotions, it's the uncertainty in the journey that brings it more life. I highly recommend this series :)

Well-rounded story

I adored this series that focused on life, family, camaraderie and first love.

This group of friends is so giving and selfless, their trials and tribulations of family and school life, intersecting with their personal lives give us all life lessons.

I love how each poignant scene is followed by a teaching moment narrated by one of the leads. This series keeps it real, there is headache and personal loss in life, even for those as young as teens. It doesn’t sugarcoat anything. With that in mind, keep an open mind about the end.

BEST YOUTH DRAMA SERIES! FOREVER!

I have already watched this back in 2019. I was hooked in watching C-Dramas last 2019 and going back to my roots.
and I don't really know the actors and actresses at that time but I was so hooked that I could not put down my phone and I remembered I was bawling my eyes out while watching the last 2 episodes in my flight.

Now to 2023: I started rewatching again because I fell in love with Hou ming hao/Neo Hou again and wanted to watch his old dramas. This Drama still never failed me to love and get hooked and be sad at the same time.

If you have watched REPLY 1988 then this drama has the same feelings and friendship.

This Drama needs to have a SEASON 2! I need my open ended closure. Because Sad Biao and Scud Yang! <3
I know they maybe still communicating through letters and at the same time the world is moving to modernization maybe perhaps they could talk and see each other again. (My wishful dream)

and HUA BIAO needs to have happiness in his life.

The Story:
It was beautifully written, friendship was so natural and fresh. It always brings smile to my face every time and every time I also get sad as this events can really happen in real life. The set was also natural that it feels like I have been there before, like I could relate to the current situation they have.

For those who are saying that romance felt like an add on, it wasn't! It was part from the very beginning subtle hints like the one you experience while you were young small crushes and some mutual understanding that no words can express but action speak louder than words.

Characters:

Hua Biao - His life was so full of pain but he never forgets to smile and put his friends first whenever they need help.
I just wish he could share his world more to other people so that he wont feel like his alone.

Yan Xi - was adorable I think she portrayed her so well, she started to trust herself and be more confident.

Li Yu - Was always there, a good companion who would try his best for his family and friends

Si Tu Er Tiao - Was the best friend who will stand up for you and would show his support always. I find him funny. when he feels so left out but that's really normal in real life friendship.

He Mei - lakcs the confidence, I do hope she finds her passion and courage. She was a bit off for me. No character development.

Nonetheless this drama will be forever in my heart. I do hope for a good closure but we all know Chinese drama's dont do that sometimes. In my heart they had a happy ending and have met again in the future.

Love & Faith will find its way.

When We Were Young is a inspiring coming of age youth drama. Although it may not hook you on the first episode, you will be drowned with how beautifully deep their message is as you ride on the waves reaching the next episodes. You can surely relate on the situations of the students as we all encountered things like that during our youth.. even today as well. The plot line itself is very strong, anticipating.

The actors were on point, laughed, cried, got mad, got scared with them... but Yang Xi was the one who captivated me and hooked me to watch this drama 'til the end (even though I really dig into this for HMH).

Music brings this nostalgia feels... especially the happy memories of teenage years.

As for the rewatch value, it was really nice to watch it slowly. I wouldn't recommend you to binge this if you don't like open endings.

It started off good but ended up beautifully written. I got some good quotes from here and I will surely always keep it in my mind.

This story gonna prove to you no matter how bad you are in studies but if you work really hard, nothing is impossible. This drama also gonna teach you about friendship and how important is a family. I realized how immature i am towards my parents when i was still teenagers ?. The girl main lead remind me of lee sungkyung in that weightlifting fairy drama. Overall the drama is good but for me im kinda disappointed with the ending. The ending doesnt give me the closure that I want.

P/s the male lead look like hyunsik, kim jinu(Winner) and Luhan all together.?

Could Have Been Epic

So sad that this drama started off with great potentials yet it left me with an open ending with so many questions and loose ends. Especially with the main lead's love story and how focused the story was on studying/grades and the importance of students' career path yet, the ending didn't do their future after all the hard time they suffered any justice.

I also want to commend this drama for a lot of things like how the FL that had bad grades wasn't forever labeled as a lost cause and instead she worked hard and made it on her own and how characters with unrequited love moved on without jealousy drama that targeted the main "couple". I also like the simplicity of the set, it wasn't extravagant and reflected exactly each family's income.

Finally, if you came here after someone recommended this to you because of reply 1988, please don' t watch this drama with that in mind. The comparisons between the two shows ruined the experience of this drama for me.
