Amazing Romance with Adorable Alien and Hot Man

This is absolutely an adorable drama. Light-hearted, cute, simply makes one laugh out loud for the silliness.

Wan Peng, playing the role of the alien girl, Chai Xiao Qi, looks like your next door neighbor's daughter with uneven teeth. It is precisely this look that makes her so adorable, pure and authentic. As an alien from another planet, she has never experienced love as we humans do on earth. All she's aware of works in high tech systems and codes. So while on earth, she is super sensitive to opposite hormonal beacons and strongly attracted to them. Despite being an alien, she is kind, upstanding and fair. New to me, but I must say Wan Peng is such an excellent actress and she nails the role perfectly. She is simply natural and convincing.

The male lead, Hsu Thassapak, plays the character Fang Leng. Appropriately named, Fang Leng is very good looking, cold and emotionless, with a loving heart for his little half brother. When their paths cross, the events that followed Chai Xiao Qi the alien and Fang Leng are hilarious, sweet and sexy. Also as a new actor to me, Hsu Thassapak is extremely good looking and hot with a perfect physique. Every move he makes is simply elegant and classy. He is such a wonderful actor and I'll be watching out for his new dramas.

Fang Leng has an unflattery name of being a casanova or a playboy, as he has a condition of not remembering or recognizing any women he dates after a rainstorm. Gradually, unaware of his own emotions, Fang Leng falls in love with Xiao Qi. Despite his condition, he does not forget Xiao Qi.

And for Xiao Qi, her goal is to retrieve her transponder so that she can return home to her planet. But no one can control love, not even for an alien; she falls for Fang Leng. She is tormented - to leave her love or stay and be away from home forever.

I love the relationship between Fang Leng and Xiao Qi, both caring for each other but at the same time, trying to hide their concerns for each other. I also love the relationships between Fang Leng and his little brother, and Fang Lie with Xiao Qi.

And of course, there are the antagonists, Fang Leng's employee, his ex-girlfriend, his step-mom and step-mom's brother. However, whatever schemes they come up with trying to hurt either Fang Leng or Xiao Qi, somehow, one way or another, the schemes are never successful.

Oh, have I mentioned the CGI tortoise? It's so adorable and well done.

This is a lovely drama to watch to help with my withdrawal syndrome from "The Untamed". Great chemistry. Must watch.

E.T. on Pheromones

This series is a must see for lovers of fantasy and office romance . Some scenes are so hilarious I’ve rewatched them already, but the story seems to be written with lots of liquor aside.

Plot
One evening an alien and her secretary get stuck on planet Earth, they transform into the earthy shape of a girl and a turtle. They rescue a man after a car crash, but their device that beams them up to their planet gets lost in the proces. So the search for this device begins, leading them to a lot of encounters with other humans.
If you think this story is pretty standard, take that: whenever this alien girl smells male hormones she looses control, wanting to sniff and fondle men all over the place, which brings her to a party with pretty samples in a night club. There she befriends the performing artist who turns out to be the younger brother of the unknown man she rescued. This car crash victim seems totally recovered, a rich and famous CEO from a perfume company who's involved in a power struggle. He’s a handsome cold man who turns warm whenever the alien girl touches his chest. Could it be his heart or something else? Moreover this CEO has amnesia caused by some trauma in his past that lets him forget all his girlfriends as soon as it rains outside. Last but not least he has an intended who is as cold blooded as he is, but somehow obsessed with marrying him. What follows is a chain of events leading to office drama and a love square, between the alien girl, the CEO, his brother and the fiancée. Will they all get what they wanted in the end?

The Good
Thanks to the alien theme this story seems more playful and fresh than the usual Chinese romcoms. Agreed, this show has all the k-c drama clichés, the arrogant CEO with a psychic disorder, his antagonistic family, a rich girl who wants to marry him, and a bubbly girl who turns his world upside down…but the difference is this alien girl acts way more sexy and bold towards the men she feels attracted to. It's funny to let pheromones play a crucial part in the encounter with an extra-territorial being, especially the pheromones of a CEO from a perfume company. I also love the conflicted feelings of this cold CEO who tries to keep up appearances but longs to be touched as well.
Actors Wan Peng and Hsu Thassapak are made for this romcom, they are funny and sexy, although their kisses were a bit lackluster with their lips stuck together in pause mode.
The other actors are also good, especially Alina Zhang, known from her role as the Fire Princess in Ice Fantasy.

The Bad
The problem with this show, and Chinese series in general, is the lack of a sound plot. My guess is this is due to the strict maintaining of marketing formulas, and drama censure. Chinese writers prefer to copy-paste certain censure-proof elements, that were successful before with other audiences. This causes a whirlwind of funny scenes, pasted together, but it fails to deliver a sound closure, leaving several loopholes and questions unanswered. Moreover it's a pity that our feisty heroine changes midway into the traditional role model for females. She suddenly acts shy when a man reacts physically to her own attraction techniques. But...

Verdict
..if you leave your brain on the shelf, don’t mind an unclear story or statement about men/women roles in society, you will love this series. The actors are adorable, there are plenty of funny scenes and Hsu Thassapak is a good singer.

*UPDATE

Did you know that the voice of Fang Leng is dubbed by the same voice actor as Lan Wangji in The Untamed? Now I know :-)

This drama may not have the best story or the most convincing technological advances considering its sci-fi theme but i love the fact that it could make my teary eyed for laughing out loud. And boy the guy is sizzling HOT. It has lots of cuddling scenes and I love it since I am a cuddler myself. It is a stress reliever for me. I always watched Kdramas but Cdramas are my newest addiction recently and this story just topped my list. I love this kind of dramas where I could just forget the world I am in and my surroundings. Afterall, I watch to entertain my self and relieve my stress.

Where are all of these 5-star and 10+ reviews coming from???

This show was the most drawn out, repetitive and absurd thing I've watched in a while.

I genuinely wanted to give this show a chance, but by ep 25, the ML STILL doesn't know the woman he's given up his career for and has fallen in love with multiple times, is an alien. Not even an inkling. There is SO LITTLE transparency with this couple. No communication ever.

The female lead has also yet to even say the words "I love you" to him. Not once! This couple has more chemistry when they're not together than when they are lMAO. the kiss scenes are awkward at best, and it's ironic that the ML, who is married irl, was putting more effort into their scenes than the FL in all her scenes combined. I can understand why it would be awkward, but their kisses are hard to watch, and I would have much preferred 1 or 2 excellent ones, to numerous bad ones where her eyes are wide open and their lips are pressed together while the camera spins around for 5 minutes. But anyways, I always forget to start with the positives so here we go.

I LIKED:
- chemistry. Their on-screen chemistry was good, mostly due to the ML. he was very convincing. I can appreciate the effort he put into seeming like he was genuinely enamoured by the FL.

- The story-line, I guess? While not unique, it was very promising. It's a shame it was pulled down by unnecessary tropes like greedy-in-laws, sinister exes/second female lead, mad evil scientist, and many other minor things. You can't ask me what any of them have said, or even what their motives and personalities are like. I've skipped about 70% of each episode since reaching the 10 ep mark, and the time spent focusing on these boring, melodrama tropes, could have been spent fleshing out the FL's feelings, motivations, and logic. She doesn't want to be discovered as an alien, yet in at least every ep, she's using her powers. ;-; Something's not adding up.

I DISLIKED:

- The supporting cast. Every single supporting cast member was a stumbling block, with the exception of 3. Mr Han, Dr. Zheng, and FL's Jie. Oh right, the FL's Jie, and basically a sister/mother figure at this point, DOESN'T KNOW SHE'S AN ALIEN EITHER? This show could have been a deep, profound exploration into the differences between human and aliens. She could have developed even deeper relationships with those around her. It could have covered Xiaoqi coming to terms with the fact that she might have to stay on Earth forever, and making life-long companionships, confiding in humans, and growing to love them. If not the ML, her jie, making deep, life-long bonds. But nO.

- The FL. This is no fault of the actress who played XQ. Xiaoqi was just all over the place, and at the end of the day, she feels, empty? Not full? Like something's missing. Anticlimactic. She hasn't grown, she hasn't changed fundamentally since ep 1, and frankly, I'm disappointed in this character.

- EXECUTION ON A WHOLE.
THIS SHOW HAS MADE ME WANT TO WRITE MY OWN SPIN-OFF OF THIS DRAMA, AND RIGHT EVERY WRONG THAT WAS COMMITTED. That's how aggravated and disappointed I am with it.

Long story short, My Girlfriend Is An Alien, was a show with a simple premise, that could have been so much more. So much more profound, and heartwarming, but instead became a shallow romance, with an ambiguous female lead, and too many plot points, to know what it really wanted to do.

DNF @ep 25. Maybe I'll return some day. Maybe not.

Spoilers ahead

I watch tons of dramas; Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, I mean tons of them. This was a league of its own for me.
I ended up dropping this drama three episodes from the finish line because I just couldn’t be bothered to keep watching. I realized I was skipping 80-90% of each episode but also having no problem keeping the story together.

Story: This was the weirdest/ longest storyline that just wouldn’t wrap up. Everything felt like it was just going on for far too long.
Ex:
FL not being able to tell ML the truth about the chip she needed back because she’s an alien but also showing off all her powers all the time.
ML believing that all the magic she was doing was part of his hallucinations.
The ex girlfriend being able to constantly manipulate countless people which is a running drama theme but this just wouldn’t end.
FL not telling anyone that she was an alien, 25 episodes down and the ML still had no clue about her true identity.
Second Male Lead just completely giving up on his music even though it was so important to him in the beginning and he returned to painting just after a little speech even though he was being forcibly locked away to paint all the time.

Acting: Both leads were good FL was strong and independent and the ML wasn’t a complete self absorbed dirt bag for the most part. He cared about her when he remembered her more than she did in return. The chemistry was definitely there sans the kissing which was frequent but so poor on the FL’s part- worse than Love 020 (which if you’ve seen the show you’ll understand). My biggest gripe with the leads was that up until episode 23 or so it still completely felt like she was only interested because of the chip in his heart but really didn’t care about him much beyond that.

Music: I don’t really remember any of it so it wasn’t remarkable or awful so background mostly.

Rewatch: I doubt I’ll rewatch this or finish it for that matter, nothing interested me enough to even go back and watch episode clips.

Overall: I’d say I’m disappointed by this show and I don’t understand where all the good reviews are coming from. The drama was too drawn out and the chemistry was hindered by the terrible kissing and the unsure feelings by the FL until the very end.

Since most reviews are from people who loved it, I thought it may be useful to offer a different perspective. I adore the trope of a secret identity, so I was into the premise, even as a comedy. I knew it will be very silly since it contains the actual words "heterosexual amnesia", I was ready for a lot (or so I thought). Unfortunately, it did not quite deliver for me.

The plot itself was decent, though it kind of dragged on. The side characters weren't very deep and didn't change much, or only changed so it would advance the plot (for example ML's brother's family was always greedy and ready to ruin lives to get what they wanted, and then they just gave up, out of nowhere?). But my biggest issues were related to the main couple, despite their cute sweet ending.

You know how many dramas start with a highly dysfunctional couple that eventually learns to be nice to each other and appreciate each other? I just don't think that happens here. For most of the story, FL is actively trying to use ML and he is not aware of it, misreading her gestures as romantic as he continues falling for her. She's into his hormones, abs, and the "chip" he has, but that's about it. She has to lie to cover up her identity, yes, but she is also actively trying to manipulate him and use him for her goal. She only changes her mind near the end, and I think it comes way too late, with not enough regret of how she treated him (there's a lot of self-pitying but not much self-reflecting).

Also: I can't believe more people aren't talking about this, but she SPIKES HIS DRINK. With medical drugs. As in, puts actual drugs in his drink and tries to trick him to consume it, and when that doesn't work, she physically forces him to swallow it??? And he manipulates her into honesty by basically drugging her, too. Is this really intended as a romanic comedy? :/

Need to turn off my brain to enjoy - then it's a funny, adorable drama.

Completed - 3/12/2022

Watching “My Girlfriend is an Alien” in 2022 might have brought me in a more cynical and critical mood when rating this drama. I might have liked it more if I watched this in 2019 and am a newbie to romantic comedies. Unfortunately to me right now there are elements in this drama that I don’t quite appreciate or enjoy. There are plot holes and inconsistencies but if I could turn off my brain and just go for the ride, it’s enjoyable, funny, low-stress and full of laughs.

I would recommend this drama to those who:
1. Love adorable female leads who are not especially dumb or naive in rom-coms
2. Like bickering between the leads
3. Enjoy a somewhat low-stress, no angst, easy-to-watch drama
4. Are OK with uncomfortable/sensitive treatment of characters
5. Don’t mind annoying 2FL and simple ‘villains’
6. Don’t mind misunderstandings

There are already many reviews for this drama so I’ll just write 1 thing I like best and 1 thing I like the least. I agree with most of the critical/negative reviews in the review section.

(+)
Our Leads:
Wang Peng played our funny and cute alien, Xiao Qi. I am glad that her adorableness did not border on being overly annoying and naive. I have seen Wang Peng previously in “When We Were Young” and “Crush”, and I have to say she looks the prettiest in this drama. I’ve never found her to be that pretty, but maybe her makeup and her character’s personality make her super attractive to me. It’s also funny that you saw clips of “When You Were Young” shown on TV in this drama. Wang Peng’s acting is on her usual level as I’ve seen in her previous dramas. She plays the cute yet stubborn Xiao Qi pretty well.

Bie Thassapk Hsu, plays the cold-on-the-outside but warmhearted male lead, Fang Leng. This is my first drama of his and I am quite impressed with his acting. I didn’t find him bland when he’s playing the cold CEO role, and I enjoy watching his more emotional scenes. Additionally, he is so handsome, looks good in both suits and casual wear, mm… shirtless as well. Xiao Qi and Fang Leng have great chemistry in this drama and is the drama’s biggest selling point. They bicker and fight, don’t really declare their love for each other but you know how much they care for each other.

(-)
As much as I want to caress Fang Leng’s muscular chest as Xiao Qi, I became increasingly uncomfortable seeing him fondled like that throughout the drama. The whole plot with Xiao Qi being uncontrollable with the smell of pheromone just becomes a way for uncomfortable, double-standard sexual harassment. I can’t deny I laughed when it happened for the first couple times, but then my brain cells kicked in and asked, what if it’s a man fondling a woman’s breast, is that funny? Additionally, there’s a lot of wrist grabbing, ML pushing FL against the wall and manhandling her. Some might find this to be romantic but I can’t seem to turn off my brain and just enjoy the ride. Because of all this, I can’t give this drama a rating higher than 7.5. It would be lower if I didn’t enjoy the leads acting and chemistry.

The plot is simply awesome. From starting till end it keeps you excited and really enjoyed how the story progressed beautifully. Specially Last episodes were really emotional, you can't take off you eyes from them.

The acting is so great, especially the female lead Wan Peng, she acted so well that I was completely involve in her character... Such a Strong, cute & kinda innocent character.Loved it. Bie looks Super Stunning and in last episodes he did extremely great job. Xiabuo was so damn cute.
And I really love the chemistry between the two main leads, they were so cute together.OMG ???? Other supporting characters are also really handsome and did wonderful job bringing out the characters to life. ❤️
At last I just wanna say, Don't waste your time & Watch it. ????❤️

The chemistry between leads is good....however, there are some dull moments...like the alien is not really that powerful...and the whole story just consisted of the alien chasing after the annunciator, or that thing that will be able to send her back to her original planet...this was supposed to be a more "advanced" alien drama considering how more advanced in technology of the alien depiction in "My Love from the Star" and that was way back in 2013. Now its 2019 and you give us a basic depiction of an "alien"? I don't think so...Story is so so and then the alien is just lame...Even the camera tricks and the special effects are nothing compare to a drama more than 6 years ago? if you are gonna use the same plot story or topic, like "aliens" or something, make it better than the previous ones already out...I feel right now that its backwards...like My Girlfriend is an Alien is from 2013 and My Love from the Star is from 2019 ....something like that...

Inconsistencies make this a forgettable drama

The story is nothing new; I guess anyone who have watched dramas for while came across something similar before, so it should be a challenge to make it interesting.
Overall it is filled with inconsistencies, probably makes a bit of sense coming from an alien but rather difficult to understand the male lead having multiple reactions - even though having some mental condition. It just didn’t leave me any impression on the events leading to them getting together (and twice!). One particular event that did leave an impression is the female lead getting subdued and restrained by a mad scientist. No explanation why he was able to subdue a powerful alien with his bare hands (maybe he carried her crystallized blood?), really forced I must say. What followed after is really uncalled for, something I would call a torture scene? And thereafter an escape attempt foiled by a violent act on a fair lady. She maybe acting as an alien but it does not make it any easier to watch.

What kept me a bit interested is the female lead, she is so cute and lively especially for the first half. Didn’t think too much of the male lead in the beginning but he grew on me. Among the supporting cast, the restaurant owner and the male lead assistant were the rare sparks in the show.

The OST in the beginning and end sounds nice and compatible to the drama but they were just played in the beginning and the end. There was also a track performed by a male singer that was nice at the very end. What a waste. Cannot recall anything else except for some old sounding tune quite frequently used in many scenes.

I am fine with flawed dramas, but this is one that I completed just for the sake of completing it. I am quite sure it wouldn’t leave any more impression even if I rewatch it.
