A gem

This might have been my first Asian drama ever. I can't really remember, but I went into it thinking it was more like a Masterpiece Theater. I even had my parents watch this one, trying to get them into Asian dramaland.

I ended up reading the book not too long ago and fair warning, they are completely different. Only the characters are the same. But I'm not mad at either one--I would encourage you to read the book as well, just do not expect much in the way of similarities.

The storyline was good, the characters made (mostly) logical choices, there were funny and cute moments, and suspenseful moments. I liked Er Yang's character and their burgeoning romance was sweet. I'm not going to lie, I also can't help liking a hot evil main character.

It was short but not rushed and you did not feel like you needed any more time or explanation. Happy ending with a bit of a foreshadow for a possible sequel.

Loosey Based

Overall, it is an okay series. The music lends itself well to the show. The sets and clothing are beautifully done. Both of these elements work well together to set the mood and tone. Its historical aspect is a little rough around the edges. I found myself questioning certain details. I really went into this drama wanting to love it. However, it differs too much from its source material. That is most evident in the first 20 minutes when you realize it's starting at the festival party. By this time, you're already a good deal into the book and Li Lan is already being haunted. There is also the deletion of some characters and the changing of others that is a little irksome. I kind of looked forward to Er Lang in his long robes with the silver thread and his wide brim bamboo hat that covers his face. For the most part it was an adequate first encounter, for me, into Taiwanese dramas.

A Really Great Watch!

This was such a great watch. The visuals were Gorgeous. The aesthetics on point. It fully gave the “old world” vibe they were clearly going for, and it pulled me in from the very beginning. The supernatural and mystery elements were solid too, kept me guessing all the way to the end.

There were twists everywhere, and the characters? Let's just say, you start off liking the wrong ones and hating the right ones. No one’s exactly likable at first, and that’s what made it fun.

The story follows Li Lan, an ordinary girl suddenly caught between real-life messes and ghost drama. She’s smart and sharp, not some strong female lead cliche, and I actually liked that. She wasn’t fearless, but she was brave. Weak in the way most of us would be, but still standing her ground. That made her strong in a way that felt real.

Then there’s Er Lang, a flirty, chaotic immortal who seems like he’s just here to cause trouble and charm every soul in sight (living or not). He’s a bit unhinged, in the best way. I loved how he went from messing with Li Lan to trying to protect her. Their banter is Gold. That spark of romance in an non-romance story was perfectly placed and it hit.

Tian Bai was your typical first love. Nice, polite, and honestly, I was suspicious of him from the start. Thought he’d be the villain. But no, he was just a little too trusting for someone that clever. Still, I didn’t mind him and Li Lan ending up married--it felt fitting in theory. But we know that that's not all that is needed.

Tian Ching, though... yeah, no. Terrible as a person, worse as a ghost. Not scary, just bitter and petty. But also, He was weirdly fun to watch. Like a villain who throws tantrums instead of fireballs. Still hated him. Still enjoyed his scenes. And loved him! ;)

The support characters deserve love too. I didn't expect to feel bad for Madam Lim or Yan Hong, but the story slowly chipped away at my judgment. Meanwhile, Amah, Mr. Pan, and Old Wang were consistently great. Just warm, solid presences through all the chaos. And i liked the mother-dauther meet again.

Also, I have to mention the comedic timing. It wasn’t trying too hard, which made it actually funny. Just the right amount of humor sprinkled between all the ghostly tension and serious moments.

Overall Taiwanese dramas has a charm to them that pulls you in, and this one was not lacking that.

If you're into supernatural mystery with rich visuals, plot twists, and characters who make you switch sides more than once—this is a ride worth taking. It's not just spooky and dramatic, it's unexpectedly emotional, with a touch of romance and humor that makes it all hit harder.

土生華人的文化在這裡面彷彿只剩下裝飾的功能

比極道好看太多太多，人物的情感、個性和情節都蠻有意思的。

但因為背景設定在19世紀的馬來亞，對於演員之間不協調的中文腔調（台灣、北京、馬來亞、粵語、美國等腔調）以及話語（有些太現代，有些太書面）讓觀眾我蠻混亂的，如果可以再協調一些更好，不然實在有些不合理（我也在思考自己創作關於這部分的狀況）。

另外，一個評論說的蠻好的，他覺得土生華人的文化在這裡面彷彿只剩下裝飾的功能，的確，馬來亞華人的境遇、生存方式在故事裡被淡化在背景之中，幾乎對於劇情沒有什麼作用。

然後黃姵嘉我真的好愛，之前看過他演客語劇《台北歌手》角色傳遞的情感和遭遇蠻讓人動容，這次的角色偏向俏皮和純真，也讓我看得很愉快，然後覺得Janet意外適合馬來亞華人的角色！

Dopo essermi immersa nella lettura del romanzo The Ghost Bride – La Moglie Fantasma dell’autrice malese di origini cinesi Yangsze Choo ed esserne rimasta affascinata, sono stata ben felice di scoprire l’esistenza dell’omonimo live-action disponibile su Netflix.
The Ghost Bride è un drama taiwanese di sei episodi della durata di circa 50 minuti ciascuno.

La storia si svolge nella brulicante e colorata città di Malacca, in Malesia, alla fine dell’Ottocento: colonia britannica e importante crocevia commerciale, la città ospita diverse culture, tra cui quella cinese grazie ai numerosi immigrati giunti in questa terra in cerca di fortuna.

Gli affari della famiglia di Pan Li Lan, però, non vanno affatto bene: il padre è sull’orlo del fallimento della sua attività di spezie. La ricca madre di Lim Tian Ching sembra arrivare al momento giusto e propone a Li Lan di sposare suo figlio, matrimonio che aiuterebbe economicamente la famiglia Pan.
C’è solo un piccolo particolare: Tian Ching è morto.

Li Lan dovrebbe diventare una sposa fantasma. La pratica minghun può apparire insolita per noi occidentale, ma è un elemento che è stato più volte rappresentato nelle opere asiatiche, basti pensare al film taiwanese Marry My Dead Body, disponibile anche questo su Netflix.
Questo antico rituale cinese prevedeva di unire in matrimonio una persona viva con una defunta o due persone defunte affinché chi è morto non rimanda solo nel mondo dell’aldilà.

Come se non bastasse, Li Lan sembra essere più affascinata dal cugino di Tian Ching, Tian Bai.
Entrerà in gioco anche un’altra figura maschile: Er Lang, Guardiano Celeste che sta indagando sulla corruzione legata proprio a Tian Ching nel regno dell’aldilà.

C’è da fare subito una piccola precisazione riguardo a questo drama: non si può ammettere che non sia una buona serie, ma non si può di certo affermare che sia una buona trasposizione.
Le puntate scorrono piacevoli e si lasciano guardare, ma il romanzo non era semplice da adattare, sia a livello di budget che di effetti speciali; il risultato è ciò che temevo: un taglia e cuci non sempre riuscito.

Le differenze si notano fin dai primi minuti del primo episodio: molti personaggi sono rappresentati in modo molto diverso rispetto all’opera originale.
Ad esempio, il padre appare semplicemente come sfortunato e non tanto l’uomo che si è lasciato andare dopo la morte della moglie, rifugiandosi nei piaceri dell’oppio e segnato sul volto dalle cicatrici lasciate dal vaiolo, malattia che gli ha portato via la sua amata.

Ma non sono solo i protagonisti ad essere raffigurati in maniera differente: vengono cambiati anche alcuni fatti e come si sono svolti, modificando alcuni, aggiungendone altri e tagliandone altri ancora.
La figura di Isabella, fidanzata di Tian Bai, nel romanzo è un personaggio solo accennato che non entra mai in scena durante il racconto: qui non solo acquista una grande importanza, ma è anche una figura chiave della storia che gioca un ruolo fondamentale, modificando così la trama.

Il personaggio che ha deluso maggiormente le mie aspettative è Er Lang. Nel romanzo è una figura affascinante, avvolta da un alone di mistero: non mostra mai il proprio volto e la sua identità viene svelata gradualmente, via via che ci si immerge nella lettura. Nella serie, invece, si mostra fin da subito senza il suo cappello a coprirgli il volto e si presenta immediatamente come Guardiano Celeste, privando così il personaggio del suo fascino che lo circondava.
Tra l’altro, quando Er Lang mostrerà il suo volto nel libro verrà definito di una bellezza mozzafiato: senza nulla togliere al bellissimo e bravissimo Wu Kang Ren che è stato straordinario in questo ruolo, ma mi ero immaginata un viso dai lineamenti più eterei.

Di contro, ho apprezzato il modo in cui è stato reso il personaggio di Li Lan: fresca, frizzante, giovane, ma al tempo stesso determinata; Huang Pei Jia è stata un’ottima scelta per interpretarla.

In conclusione, se The Ghost Bride è un po’ un’occasione mancata. Resta comunque una serie piacevole, ma il mio consiglio casomai è quello di vedere prima la versione live-action e poi leggere il romanzo: in questo modo si riescono ad apprezzare entrambe le versioni senza che una penalizzi l’altra.
Io, invece, mi rifarò leggendo l’altro romanzo di Yangsze Choo, sempre edito in Italia per HarperCollins, La Tigre della Notte che al momento non ha ancora ricevuto trasposizioni… o almeno, non per ora!
