just a mixture of every other kdrama

Well well well wasn't this a big disappointment..
Looking at the cast you definitely end up expecting a great kdrama that will keep u waiting every week and have a promising story line.....needless to say this was not the case....
It started of pretty good imo but midway it just got all haywire as they started putting so many different kdrama plots all at once (which does work in some places but unfortunately not here)
As another review said it's basically a mix of all fantasy kdramas specially goblin........like for god's sake they had to copy the iconic goblin disappearing in flames?! I mean as writers maybe u cud come up with smthn different or just rather make him die like a normal person or smthn....but to copy a very very famous drama is just dumb....like did they expect nobody to notice or did they expect ppl to love it?
Also the overall plot was just like all cliche dramas.....but cliches still work if u add at least one new element......this was just tooo generalised and predictable like the past life? guwon having a connection to do hee's parents' death? a psycho sfl who's idiocy and obsession they just forget and move on? the dramatic break up in episode 14? the contract marriage? the 'i hated you but now i love u? the unexplainable change in his powers ? it's just everything that's been done so many times..... The audience obviously demands something new with everything they watch and if u cannot deliver this maybe think of doing something else that will make you stand out instead of all these cliche plotlines and a 16 episode long series....
Istg they did not fail to include every damn scene or plotline that has been done millions of times....
Personally for me and this may be for others as well.... i really was looking forward to song kang and kim yoo jung together on screen as they are such amazing famous actors.....im sorry to say but i just couldn't love song kang in this one......his acting just seemed so unconvincing....he was great in some parts but tbh his acting in the romcom parts didn't really cut it for me......that being said....the chemistry was fairly good if not the best out there.....
Personally i think there were just too many issues with the plot and the writing for me to be able to enjoy this for what it was and not look at its shortcomings.....
So if ur planning to watch this i would not suggest it unless ur a first time kdrama watcher and totally unaware of those 100s of kdramas this one's a mixture of

if u want a cute romcom with pretty leads, u will love this drama
if u wanted a angsty-female ceo x demon-contract marriage, this is not it. i went in excited with high expectations and i was very much disappointed.

this drama was very very similar to destined with you. the demon is not demonic at all, his powers are like his silly quirk. even though do-hee is a ceo, she doesn't do much work-related and her whole workplace is just a place for comedy
there were so many plot holes/things that did not make sense. like how is she super rich but has less security than common people. also the reasoning for gu-won to become a demon also is very weak, so is seok-min's intentions.

do-hee and gu-won were almost instantly attracted to each other and fell in love quickly, after that the plot was predictable. fan theories were more fun that the actual story

the cast did well, especially kim you-jung and song kang. their chemistry was great but that was it

I started watching this drama knowing very well that is full of clichés only because I wanted to watch something light to ease my mind after stressful exam season. First 6 episodes were incredible. I actually thought we might finally get a good story even with all the clichés. They did a great job introducing the characters as they all seemed quite interesting and kept a good pace. I was invested in the story then it just went downhill .One of the reasons for that is the villain's characterization. there are a few of them and none of them ever make sense. they're just evil in a very comic and over the top way. There is no clear motivation to explain why they're trying so hard to pull Do hee down. This over the topness gets repeated a few more time when some characters somehow survive after falling down from a skyscraper ( I rolled my eyes so hard I saw my brain ) or even when they're stabbed severely.
Another reason is they didn't know what they wanted to do with the story so they tried to re-create some scenes from other fantasy dramas ( goblin,9 tailed fox, gumiho etc. ). Now I don't care about cheesy over the top scenes if the story is good but that's not what happened here. It spends so much time on unnecessary characters and sub plots . Jin star, Seok hun and the gang members were useless. Bok kyu and secretary Shin were funny at first but they got boring too. All their screen time should've been given to Noh family.
another thing is there is way too many flash backs. It seems like they didn't have enough materials for 16 episodes.
I wish post ep 6 was written differently. There was so much potential.
It certainly did serve fashion ( I'm not sure if this is a really good point tho as it seemed like an extended ad for certain fashion brands at time ) and the OSTs are pretty.

Expected more but overall it was alright

The hype that came with this drama before it even aired probably didn't do this drama any favors. I was literally so excited to watch but then it ended up just being alright and just a bit disappointing, especially towards the end where I was just over it and didn't really care much for it anymore. The only thing that really saved this drama was the chemistry and visual factors of our two leads, Kim You Jung and Song Kang. Honestly too, I finished this drama about a week ago and I forgot to write my review and now, I don't even have much to say. It just wasn't very excited or memorable really. Just a drama to pass the time and to be mildly to moderately entertained I guess.

I was obsessed with this show when it started

When this show started, I was obsessed. The minute new episodes dropped, I was there watching. And for episodes 1-10 I was in love with it. Every drama has filler episodes and I don’t mind 1 or 2 but this show is mainly filler episodes from episode 8-16. And I can’t believe I’m saying this because a month ago I was telling everyone I know about this show.

The acting and chemistry keeps this drama going. Kim Yoo Jung is really good in this and I would like to see her in similar roles as she matures as an actress. She really has chemistry with any actor she’s put with and I thought she was pretty good at the funnier scenes too.

I see a lot of people not enjoying Song Kang in this but I think he’s fine. He excels at the more intense scenes, but he could probably stand to work on his comedy delivery. His performance isn’t helped by the fact that outside of romantic scenes, he’s always paired with a much stronger comedic actor - the actor playing his sidekick assistant being a prime example.

The story had a lot of potential and I almost wish someone would redo the concept in a few years time but give us an actual mystery. Maybe the family could’ve been a lot bigger and with a real whodunnit.

I liked the songs in this; the title sequence music fit perfectly. However, there’s one song (and I’m sorry I don’t remember the name) which they used often and it rarely fit the mood of the scene. I’m only mentioning it in case someone out there feels vindicated that I also hated the use of that one song.

Overall, it wasn’t bad but I think a lot of us are mourning wasted potential.

How did they make a fascinating premise so boring in parts?

7/10 is my rating. This is a 2023/2024 South Korean supernatural romance drama with 16, 67 (average) minute episodes.

First I provide a unique synopsis then review

Synopsis

Do Do Hee (Kim You Jung) is the adopted daughter and heir apparent to a conglomerate company called the “Future Group”. She is known as a devilish, hard hitting, and “take no prisoners” executive who has won many awards. Her adopted mother, Joo Chun Sook (Kim Hae Sook) made it clear, when she was alive, that Do Hee would take over after she passed. This does not endear Do Hee to Chun Sook’s children who consider it their right to inherit all of their mother’s assets. The obvious solution to some of them is to get rid of the problem. In this case the problem is Do Hee. When a serial killer is hired to kill Do Hee, he nearly succeeds until Jung Koo Won (Song Kang) appears in his role as a Demon who strikes deals with mortals by granting wishings in return for their trip to Hell 10 years later. He originally plans to only save Do Hee if she enters into an agreement but then agrees to save her and then talk about the agreement. In the chaos that follows they both wind up nearly drowning and the tattoo that gives Koo Won his supernatural powers, transfers to Do Hee. Koo Won finds that he can still perform his role and have access to his power by holding Do Hee’s wrist where the tattoo is located. When Jun Sook tragically dies a condition of inheriting the business is Do Hee must marry within a year. Koo Won agrees to a contract marriage for mutual benefit, he needs to be close to her to touch her tattoo and she needs a husband to secure her inheritance. The two have twisted fate in the present, but things get even more fate based when it appears they also had a connection in the past.

Review

When I looked at reviews there seemed to be those that really loved this series but there was a near equal number that did not like it well. I am in the “did not like it well” camp. I think it is worth watching for the two talented actors, great chemistry and interesting premise if you can relax your expectations for a sensible plot. I was actually bored at times because the progress would hit a stall. I would recommend drama fans watch it once but I wouldn’t rush out to watch it.

Spoilers

I have seen hundreds of dramas at this point and that could be why I am among those that found this one very underwhelming. The main couple got together too early in my opinion. Then was no sense of anticipation. It did not make sense to me that she was so driven and determined to be the heir and then she just gave it up. I know they were trying for the “anything for love” angle, that she was willing to give up all the power and money to protect herself and the person she loved but it was out of character in my opinion.

The serial killer bad guy who was hunting her died too early. I was wondering what they were going to have happen next. It was just odd to have that particular bad guy gone so early in the story.

Two very annoying things in this one. Usually you feel somewhat sorry for 2nd girl or guy and I did like second guy but the 2nd girl was one of the most annoying I have experienced to date. They tried hard to gain our sympathy for her in showing how he saved her from abuse but, even that, did not excuse her toxic behavior later. She even tried to get main girl to drink poison so that the main guy, who is a demon who already lived hundreds of years, could live. Although she had hung around him for over a decade and he showed no interest she still blamed main girl for wrecking her chance. What chance? Her jealousy was misplaced and annoying.

The other annoying thing was the romance between the elder couple. It was fine they liked each other, even cute, but them hiding it for so long became ridiculous. I think it was supposed to be funny and they definitely did the big reveal where they thought they were hiding it but everyone already knew. Oh ha ha! Like we have never seen that play out before. It was unoriginal and just not funny.

When Netflix gets ahold of something I know it is going to be drawn out too much and there will be way too many flashbacks. That was the case in this one. The plot would already be dragging because so many of the major conflicts and reveals already happened and then, oh great, let’s rehash the whole script again.

They, of course, had to do the separating from you for your own good trope. I don’t like that trope. It is right up there with the amnesia trope for me.

I believe it was confirmed the leads were dating in real life and they definitely had that level of chemistry. It is not their fault the script was just awful at some points. Their acting was excellent but the content was off.

There was so much potential in this one. With a great cast and interesting premise this could have been a great addition to the supernatural genre. I am not sure how they managed to make it so drawn out and boring except the pacing and when they chose to do reveals.

A good, lightful & comedic drama

Starting off it was expoentionly good, but as you watch you realise that has typical plot but at the same it's unique,
Good factors:
*It contained amazing chemistry
*it was really funny
*The acting was amazing
*it was pretty exciting and I kept waiting for new episodes eagerly

No not so good factors:
*The storyline was messed up
*At some point the storyline was so predictable
*The timing and everything was going downhill as we reached the end of the drama
*It just had too much things
Spoilerrr - gu won returning as a demon make sense as he was immortal as a demon, ofc he would grieve for do hee if she died because she's a human, she's bound to die since she's an mortal, it would only make sense if he returned as a human

Not only me but many people think the same
So iam not tryna offend anyone..
In conclusion I really liked it overall I would recommend it

Watching this for Song Kang

Let me start with the fact that the actress Kim Yoo Jung looks like a doppelgänger with Ki Hyun Woo. Right down to the eye mold on the left cheek.

As with Kdramas with chaebols. You can expect a villain. This villain became apparent after before the final reveal. As soon as you were shown the son being evil you can see the misdirect to the true villain. Although they did give a second misdirect with the cousin and the dad.

The mom really did not deserve a redemption arc in the end. Both Chairman Ju and Kim Se Ra. At least the sister Noh Soo A stayed true to being a self serving chaebol to the very end.

Of course what demon series wouldn’t do a past lives reincarnation. At least it makes a bit more sense in this series. I mean we need an original story of why he became a demon.

With the whole 200 year old demon I would imagine there are other demons too. My guess is that he is only accountable for however many souls there are clocks.

It also makes sense that a demon needs to be visual pleasing to the eyes. I mean who would sell their soul to an fugly mofo. I mean the devil is supposed to be god’s most beautiful angel before he fell into hell for an insurrection.

The side couple of Shin Na Jeong and Park Bok Yu was entertaining enough without eclipsing the main couple.

Overall, it is an easy watch despite this not being new or groundbreaking. It is just a guilty pleasure to watch Song Kang in another series where he looks hot with decent story and acting.

The same ending again

I don't know why but all the smiler stories like (goblin, doom at your services...) it safe to see if you watched any of those series you'll be able to except how this will end from the first episode as i actually did and it's no fun to now how a story end from the beginning, it seems like those series all has been given the same plot template which and there's no fun on a twist that have been used in every single one and it wasn't good anyway in any of those ones because i do understand the need of pulling the best possible Happy ending but not over destroying the story law's you made by yourself like oh sad his dead but guess what he's not he is back, but why or how, because he is the mc.
That is whack and not even surprising.

Average one time watch copy paste fantasy rom-com

It is an okayish and average one time watch. The leads looks adorable together. They were the only good part of this half baked show. The story was messy and there were line by line copied scenes from other shows. The show started decently then turned into a messy watch. Also the show villain was poor his character didn't gave me villain vibes. His villain revealation and era was poor too.The things he did as a villain was stupid. Then there was SML character who got wasted he was just a catalyst and supporting character in the show hell other characters got more plot than him.He would have been a better villain even if it would have been a predictable twist.Star Jin was useless and annoying too.But there were some iconic moments that I
liked like the tango fight scene of the leads. The gangstar gang & ML employee -FL secretary were hilarious they brought the comic element in the show. The past backstory was bad and unnecessary there was no need for a Joseon past backstory also unnecessarily adding FL to that backstory was a bad twist. The last two episodes were bad and stupid like the villain burning his own face, him returning to death without any scars after falling from so much high, then ML dying and returning on the same day there was no need to make him disappear for bringing angst in the show etc.The last episode was disappointing too with having only romantic scenes of the leads I was expecting a good iconic ending for the show it doesn't necessarily have to have been a sad ending though. The last episode felt like as usual ordinary other rom-com episodes of this show.

8.3/10

Slightly above average fantasy drama

The show started off interesting and it was good until the point when the ML gets his demon powers back. After that the story is the weakest with little happening. And quite a disappointing end.

The strong point of My Demon is it's OST and opening theme. The cinematography is good but not really used. They didn't try to showcase much of the Demon's powers except for comedic purposes. A lot of recent fantasy drama tropes have been repeated in this one so it felt boring. Still, among the recently airing/aired fantasy dramas, this was one of the better choices.

Repeated tropes included:
1. Chaebol parent forcing their child to get married where they end up in a contract marriage in order to make sure their parent does a health check up (similar to The Story of Park's Marriage Contract).
2. Past life connection - also in The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, My Man Is Cupid.
3. Mystery of a murder(s) - same as above
4. One lead realizing they have a past life connection and other lead slowly getting their past life memory back close to finale and - My Man Is Cupid
5. Cold ML, Warm FL - TSOPMC and My Man Is Cupid
6. A Superior being who is the boss of the supernatural lead - My Man Is Cupid
7. A SML that makes you wonder if they are playing a negative or a useless positive character - My Man Is Cupid, TSOPMC

There isn't much to the story that is new except that they added an element of religion more heavily than other dramas. It just felt a bit cheesy by the end because of it.

The couple make a really cute pair but at times their cuteness gave me sibling vibes rather than a hot couple. For the most part I wasn't bored and I'm giving it a 7 because I enjoyed the first half. Just wish it had more of a wow factor. The ending left a lot to be desired with the villain just turning out to be crazy for no good reason. Many of his actions didn't make sense. Like stealing the demon's book and not really ending up doing anything with it. And sacrificing his son. His end goal wasn't clear at all.

It's okay for a one time watch.

Nothing new!

In the realm of "My Demon," the storyline didn't quite grab me, but the magic was in the leads. Let me break it down for you.

So, the plot? It felt a bit like a background character, not stealing the spotlight. I couldn't pinpoint a captivating narrative arc or thrilling twists that usually keep me on the edge of my seat. It was more like watching the leaves fall in autumn—pleasant but not exactly a gripping spectacle.

Now, before you think I'm dissing the whole thing, let's talk about the saving grace—the leads. Oh boy, they were the stars of the show. Their on-screen magic, the way they looked at each other—those stolen glances and electric moments—that's what kept me hooked. It was like watching a cozy fireplace on a chilly night, comforting and captivating.

I'll be honest; I stuck around for the leads. Their chemistry had this magnetic pull that overshadowed the lackluster plot. It was like having a front-row seat to a mesmerizing dance—you can't look away even if the dance floor isn't the most exciting.

The lack of a gripping plot didn't bother me as much because the characters were my anchor. I watched for their quirks, their banter, and the subtle nuances that made their connection feel real. It's like savoring a simple cup of coffee with a friend; you're not there for the coffee itself, but for the company.

In a way, it became my guilty pleasure. I knew the plot wasn't going to win any awards, but the charm of the leads kept me coming back for more. It's like having a favorite comfort food—it might not be gourmet, but it hits the right spots.

Now, could "My Demon" have benefited from a more robust storyline? Absolutely. A captivating plot would have been the cherry on top. But sometimes, in the vast world of shows and movies, you find these hidden gems where the characters shine so brightly that you overlook the plot's shortcomings.

In conclusion, "My Demon" may not have boasted a mind-blowing plot, but the leads made it a worthwhile watch. It's like a breezy weekend read—you're not dissecting every plot twist; you're there for the characters and the cozy atmosphere they create. If you're into character-driven stories and can forgive a plot that's a bit lackluster, give it a shot. It might just become your guilty pleasure, like it did for me.
