a true masterpiece!!!!!!!

I can’t stop talking about this drama since starting it. This one managed to become my whole personality while I watched it, and it’s been such a long time since that last happened.
There’s just nothing to criticize about it. The acting was PERFECT, the screenplay was also PERFECT, the osts… everything truly, was PERFECT.
I loved the main characters, and loved to hate the villains.
Chinese dramas have become my favorites in recent years because of how rich and through the stories tend to be and this one didn’t disappoint.
We got a really strong female lead, a slightly obsessive and impressive male lead, sweet and funny side characters and a villain who was charismatic and had all the justifying reasons for being the villain he was (at some point I even pitted the poor guy).
Truly, I can’t possibly recommend this one enough!!! If anything, I just wished for a little bit more of lovey dovey scenes with the main couple by the end, but by all means the end wasn’t unsatisfying at all… although I was definitely left behind with some questions about Qian Qian (the restaurant owner) who seemed to have some mystery behind where she came from, a hint that’s given briefly only at the last episode and I wish it had been explored further, since I now really want to know her story! But aside from that and me wishing for a new season telling her side of the story… this drama was perfect through and through.
10/10 definitely recommend!!!!

It has been a long time since I watched Chinese dramas. However, now I have finally entered my "C-drama era"! Honestly, Pursuit of Jade is a straight-up masterpiece. I’m not even exaggerating—from the very first episode, I was just gone. The emotional depth is actually insane. And it seems I won't be able to move on to the next drama for a while😭

The whole production is just... wow. The lighting and the colors aren't just there to look pretty; they make the whole vibe feel so ethereal and moody. And don't even get me started on the close-ups! The tension is literally suffocating (in a good way lol). The leads have the most perfect slow-burn chemistry I’ve seen in ages. I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting for them to just look at each other 😭

Also, can we talk about the OST for a second?? Because I’m obsessed. The songs hit so hard, especially the sadder tracks—they actually pull at your heartstrings when things get heavy. But then the music for the action scenes? Epic. I’ve already got the whole album on repeat!

I’ve seen some people complaining about the "lack of logic" in this drama, but honestly? It’s not a documentary! Since when do we need 100% realism to enjoy a story? 😅 As long as the plot works within the world of the drama, I’m totally fine with it. And okay, if I’m being totally honest, the writing for the last arc could’ve been a bit stronger, but it didn't ruin the experience for me at all. The rest of the show is so good that I can definitely look past it.

Seriously, if you haven’t watched it yet, what are you doing? It’s such an emotional journey and it’s set the bar way too high for whatever I watch next. Officially obsessed! 😭✨

Romance, Revenge, and a Heroine Who Could Knock Out a Pig

📝 Review

(WARNING: Potential Spoilers — I’m Not Saving You from Any Emotional Damage)

I went into this expecting a popular costume drama that social media had collectively decided was worth obsessing over.

For once, the internet was right.

The story follows Fan Chang Yu and Xie Zheng as their fake marriage slowly evolves into a genuine partnership, and quickly spirals into revenge, political power struggles, warfare, hidden identities, and enough emotional investment to become a problem.

The FL is one of my favorite parts of the entire drama. Fan Chang Yu is strong, capable, and independent without feeling like she's been written solely to prove a point. She isn't a helpless damsel, but she also isn't written as an overbearing "I don't need anyone" archetype.

She feels like an actual person.

The ML carries much of the political and emotional weight of the story, while Zhang Ling He brings a quiet intensity that works incredibly well for the character, creating one of the strongest lead pairings I've seen in a wuxia drama recently.

The supporting cast and side chaos add tension, humor, heartbreak, and occasional moments where you realize absolutely nobody in this story is getting a peaceful week.

These types of dramas tend to rely heavily on chemistry between the leads, and this one is no exception.

Even though the original story was noticeably toned down due to censorship, Tian Xi Wei and Zhang Ling He still managed to sell every emotional beat.

By the middle/end, I was fully invested in their relationship, their victories, and every obstacle standing in their way.

Then the wars escalated, the betrayals started piling up, and the emotional damage train arrived right on schedule.

My brain: occupied by military strategies and conspiracy theories.

My emotions: repeatedly attacked.

My snacks: gone before the next battle even started.

And then there's the soundtrack.

The moment 风云起 (Rising Storm) started playing, it instantly elevated every scene it touched. Some songs become associated with a drama.

This one became part of the drama's identity.

In the end, I finished feeling completely satisfied.

And somehow… it worked.

There are no words

There are no words to describe how amazing this drama is. ZLH and TXW have the most amazing chemistry and truly delivered a masterclass performance! My only concern now is that absolutely nothing will top this show for me and every c-drama I watch from here on out will be a disappointment.

I would also commend the cinematography and direction because DAYUM! The lighting, the angles, the wind that's just everywhere...it all just adds to the mood in every scene. This is probably the best lighting I've seen in any show.

100/10 a must-watch best drama I’ve seen in a long time

The Perfect Masterclass in Character Buildup
Pursuit of Jade understands something that so many modern romance dramas fail to grasp: true emotional chemistry must be earned. The drama takes its time in the beginning, moving deliberately to establish the world, the high stakes, and the complex inner lives of its leads. But unlike dramas that are slow just to fill runtime, this initial slower pace serves a brilliant purpose. It lets you watch the bricks of their relationship being laid one by one. By the time they fully align, you aren't just watching a romance; you are completely invested in a bond forged through shared trials, mutual respect, and profound trust.

A Modern Blueprint for the Power Couple
The defining triumph of this storyline is how it completely flips the script on standard romance tropes:

A Truly Strong, Independent Female Lead: She is a breath of fresh air. Fierce, brilliant, and completely capable of holding her own, she doesn't exist to be rescued, and she never slips into repetitive, annoying communication roadblocks. She has absolute agency in her own story.

The Ultimate Supportive Partner: Zhang Linghe’s character represents the absolute peak of the "supportive partner" archetype. He doesn't try to dim her light, override her decisions, or play the overbearing protector. Instead, he stands beside her as a true equal—a rock in her life who respects her strength and supports her independence unconditionally. Their dynamic is mature, powerful, and incredibly refreshing.

If you have tracked Zhang Linghe’s filmography through his various historical and modern roles, Pursuit of Jade is undeniably the moment everything clicked into place. This is the drama where he transforms from a highly capable actor into an absolute powerhouse leading man.
His acting has reached a stunning new level of nuance and maturity here. He commands the screen not just with physical presence, but with subtle, deeply expressive micro-expressions. The way he watches the female lead, the quiet gravity he brings to the high-stakes political maneuvers, and his sheer emotional range show an immense growth in his craft. It is impossible not to fall completely in love with him in this role.

From a brilliant storyline to an unassailable power couple, Pursuit of Jade delivers everything a top-tier drama should. It is addictive enough to steal your sleep and so beautifully executed that the moment the final credits roll, you want to jump right back to episode one to experience the buildup all over again. A true masterclass in storytelling.

Pursuit of Jade: Funny, Heartbreaking & Addictively Good

Pursuit of Jade was one of the best dramas I’ve watched in a while! It perfectly mixes funny, heartbreaking, and heart-tugging moments all together.
I loved the romance between the main couple — it was so cute and hilarious. The female lead is really strong and independent, which made her super cool. I also adored the kids in this drama, they were absolutely adorable!
This drama did an amazing job showing how dark and twisted some kinds of love can become. The two brothers as villains were incredibly stomach-turning and honestly haunted me. The way it explores aggressive, poisonous love and the madness it can cause was really well done.
The character development throughout the show is excellent. I loved watching every character grow and change.
Overall, this drama has tragedy, humor, strong love, and great writing. I would definitely rewatch it and highly recommend it to anyone who loves a rich love story with depth.

I love POJ so much, thank you for opening the door of Cdrama for me. I have rewatched this for 4 times already since this was released last March. The chemistry of the cast, the acting, the plot - although the second arc of the story fell short for my expectation it still delivered. It gave me those butterflies, emersion, joy and excitement, never did I feel boredom all throughout EP1 to EP 40. The highlight of this drama for me is the character of Fan Chanyu - Tian Xiwei portrayed it so well. No matter what the ha***r says, it deserves the success it earned and the cast to be recognized globally and more. Tian Xiwei you are so dear to me that I've watched all your dramas.

Solid C-Drama with good action/plot

Overall, a very enjoyable drama. The leads did a great job and chemistry is good. Even the side characters/villains were very convincing. Only thing that could be improve is the political plot line is a little easy to get lost and could have been better.

All episodes are solid and not skips needed. Highly recommended!

I LOVE YAN ZHENG. I LOVE XIE ZHENG. I LOVE ZHANG LING HE.

Well, this drama is definitely a 10/10 for me. Well, if I can, I'll happily rate it as 11/10 on this site. I love it this much.

What I Loved:
- The ML, but of course. He was the absolute star of the drama. He looked so suave and dashing and behaved so charmingly. It was such a joy seeing him light up my TV screen. Every scene with him in it was breathtaking and some scenes were even more so. For example, the scenes of him protecting Chang Yu's home while she was away. He told the villains to "shi shi" (try) and it made me swoon. The way he looked tenderly at Chang Yu each time made me melt. I loved how he stared down at Song Yan and showed how powerful he was. I love the pent up emotions he displayed and how he longed for and even lusted for Chang Yu. He made me swoon and melt like ice cream in heat.
- The plot was absolutely intriguing and exciting to me. I also liked how the ending was properly done and it even gave us viewers an alternate ending which was very sweet too. Well, Chang Yu and Xie Zheng were fated to be together no matter what.
- I liked the fight scenes and how Chang Yu showed how she had a good heart and very strong physique. She used her strength to help others.
- The side characters, like the villains turned good, Gongsun Yin, the old teacher, Chang Ning, Mr and Mrs Zhao, were also brilliant and made the show even better. Having watched Mr Zhao as an awful villain in other dramas, I was delighted that he was a good fellow through and through in this drama. I liked how he was so nice throughout. Gongsun Yin turned out to be really funny too. Chang Ning was adorable throughout the show.
- The OST was extremely suitable for the show other than the song by JJ Lin because I'm not a fan of his vocals. "Jing Jing Ru Wo" was one of the nicest songs. Many others were excellent too.
- The costumes and setting were very nice too.

Now, I want to go into the Main Reason why I love this drama. This drama is written for women by a female writer who knows exactly what women want in a man and she delivered our dream male lover. As I watched the drama, I thought to myself, "This drama is written for the female gaze." I went to look things up and viola! Yes, the author of the novel is a female. I also believe that she is heterosexual. LOL :o)

** "Pursuit of Jade" is written for the female gaze/ the female viewer. **

First, women want a man who loves us and a man who protects us. The fact that the ML is two people in one person gives this to us women. Yan Zheng loves Chang Yu. This side of him is the one who loves her and even marries into her family. He is not a chauvinist. He does not have male ego. He gives in to her and marries into her family and promises to listen to his wife as she is the head of the family and not him. In this patriarchal society where countless women are put down and where countless women have unreasonable demands placed on them, this is a relief. Women want to be loved by lovers who have no frustrating male ego that we women have to stroke. Yan Zheng had no unreasonable male ego. He yielded to Chang Yu and agreed to her terms and her words. He often said "hao" (good) to her. He hardly argued. To her, everything went her way. She led and he willingly followed. Women want this. Please do not question us women. We do know what we want and we want support and loving treatment. Additionally, the ML remains manly and suave. He is clearly a fully grown and handsome man through and through. He is not a sad wimp. This is also what women want. We want a true manly man without the inflated male ego. We want a true man who loves his woman dearly and truly. Moving forward, I will talk about the ML being a man who protects his woman at all costs. He loves deeply and he loves hard. For instance, the ML, despite being injured, goes all out to protect Chang Yu from corrupt officials. Moreover, throughout the drama, he saves her many times and he protects her throughout. He loves her so much that he wants her safe and sound. We women want this. We want a man who loves and cares only for us. We want a man, who will sacrifice for us, without airs and ego. We want a protector. We want to be able to fully rely on our man and to know that he has got our back no matter what. Xie Zheng gives this to us. He is completely able to protect his woman and we feel safe with such a man.

Second, women want a very handsome man. I mean, who does not want a good-looking lover? A good-looking lover who only has eyes for his one and only... this is a complete win as many good-looking men are players. It is, indisputable, that the ML is exceedingly good-looking. Mirrors love him and so do I.

Third, women want a very strong man. Women want a man who is physically very strong. Seeing all the muscles in the right places and seeing the armour on that fit and taut body makes us swoon. After all, women are looking for the best possible father for our potential offspring and the best person to protect us. Being very physically fit is something that women desire in our ideal man. The ML is 190 cm tall and so toned that we cannot help but swoon and fall in love with this very fine specimen of a man. He is a very manly man indeed.

Fourth, women also desire a very capable man. Women want a man who is highly competent and who can take good care of us with his capabilities. The ML is a high-ranking official and he is an extremely good fighter. Women go head over heels for such a man. Xie Zheng is the character which gives this to us. He is a fighter and so good at it. He is powerful and he uses his powers.

Fifth, women want a man who listens to us. We want a man to be tough on the world but soft with us. The ML does just this. He is very harsh and tough to everyone else. He fears no one and everyone seems to fear him. However, when it comes to his lady love, he is soft and acquiesces to her words and her demands. Yan Zheng is this side of the character of the ML. He is soft and gentle with Chang Yu and he supports her and helps her without making her feel that she has lost her pride and dignity. What is important to Chang Yu is important to Yan Zheng. We women want a man who will support us through thick and thin and even through our nonsense. We want someone who listens properly to us and the ML does this well.

Sixth, women want a man who is loyal and who looks only at us with such loving gazes each time. The ML is a faithful lover. He stays true to Chang Yu and loves only her. He gazes at her with such deep love and tenderness. We women want a man who does just this. We want to be viewed in a glowing and positive light. We want to be the FL in our man's life. Chang Yu is Yan Zheng's/ Xie Zheng's one and only lady and this is what we want as women. We want a handsome, capable and fit man who loves us fully.

Seventh and last, women want a man with a healthy desire for his woman. It is clear that while the ML loves Chang Yu, he also lusts after her. However, he is a gentleman until everything is all serious in their relationship and until she gives her approval to move further along the bases. We women want an "interested in us" man but we want to be respected and valued. Women are not just objects to satisfy male lust. Women desire to be loved right and to be treated right.

All in all, "Pursuit of Jade" works so well because women are given our fantasy lover/ man/ husband in the very delicious and good-looking form of ZLH. He is the epitome of Yan Zheng/ Xie Zheng and I will love him forever as Wu An Hou in Zhu Yu.

Definitely worth the high rating

OMG, the female lead actress killed it! Her acting had no fault and matched the character perfectly.
In general all the actors were good. The series mixed a little comedy enough to lighten the mood but not too much to harm the seriousness of the story.
I specially liked the female lead's role and acting but the male lead was very good too.

A World I Didn't Want to Leave Behind

Some dramas tell a beautiful story. Others impress through visuals or star performances. Very few manage to combine writing, directing, acting, music, emotional impact, visual beauty, and psychological depth into a truly exceptional work. For me, Pursuit of Jade belongs firmly in that rare category.
What stands out immediately is the extraordinary level of care devoted to every detail. Nothing feels accidental. Every character, from the central protagonists to the smallest supporting roles, serves a meaningful purpose within the narrative. Every relationship contributes to the larger story, and every decision carries believable consequences.
Beyond its narrative achievements, Pursuit of Jade succeeds in accomplishing something increasingly rare in contemporary storytelling: it creates a world the viewer genuinely wishes to inhabit. The visual beauty of the production is not merely decorative. Through its cinematography, costumes, landscapes, music, and atmosphere, the drama offers a form of emotional escape that many modern productions neglect. While realism remains valuable, art also serves another purpose: it allows us to step outside the limitations of everyday life and experience beauty, hope, courage, and meaning through different eyes. Pursuit of Jade understands this deeply. It does not simply depict a world; it invites the audience to live within it for a time.
At the heart of the drama is Xie Zheng, the Marquis of Wu'an, portrayed brilliantly by Zhang Linghe. Introduced as a seemingly fragile and restrained scholar, he gradually reveals himself to be one of the most layered and compelling characters in recent Chinese historical drama. He is simultaneously strategist, warrior, survivor, and victim of his own pursuit of justice. Torn between love and revenge, duty and personal happiness, he embodies the tragic complexity that defines the series.
Zhang Linghe delivers what may be one of the finest performances of his career. His greatest strength lies not in grand speeches but in subtle expression. Through silence, restraint, and nuanced emotional control, he communicates grief, loyalty, determination, and heartbreak with remarkable authenticity.
One aspect that deserves special recognition is the courage and vision of the casting team and director in entrusting Zhang Linghe with a character as demanding as Xie Zheng. This role requires far more than screen presence or charisma. It demands the ability to portray the psychological weight of war, grief, responsibility, sacrifice, vengeance, love, and moral conflict.
For that reason, his achievement becomes even more remarkable. At an age when many actors are still discovering their artistic identity, Zhang Linghe delivers a performance that convincingly embodies experiences most people never face in an entire lifetime. Whether this accomplishment stems purely from his own dedication and talent or was further shaped by the guidance of an exceptional director and creative team, the result remains extraordinary.
The individuals who recognized his potential and entrusted him with such a challenging role deserve sincere congratulations. In my view, the outcome is not only one of the strongest performances within the drama itself but also the most significant artistic achievement of his career so far. While I cannot claim to have seen every project in his filmography, it is difficult to imagine another role that showcases his emotional intelligence, discipline, restraint, and expressive depth more effectively.
Alongside him, Tian Xiwei gives Fan Changyu extraordinary depth. Initially introduced as a strong-willed butcher, she evolves into a symbol of resilience, courage, and emotional strength. The relationship between Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng is one of the drama's greatest achievements. Rather than relying on idealized romance, it develops through trust, sacrifice, conflict, and personal growth.
The supporting relationships are equally compelling. The storyline involving Qi Min and Yu Qianqian adds warmth and tenderness, while the dynamic between Princess Royal Qi Shu and the strategist Gongsun Yin introduces intellectual and emotional sophistication. Their interactions demonstrate that love can emerge between people united not only by affection but also by mutual respect and understanding.
Politically, the drama excels. The struggle involving the Emperor, Prime Minister Wei Yan, rival factions, and hidden heirs is far more than palace intrigue. It becomes a powerful exploration of power, corruption, loyalty, and the devastating human cost of political ambition.
The historical backdrop is handled with impressive maturity. Warfare is not glorified but portrayed as a source of trauma, sacrifice, and irreversible loss. The series succeeds in blending historical inspiration with modern emotional accessibility.
Another strength is its balance of drama and humor. The comedic moments never undermine the seriousness of the narrative. Instead, they provide relief, enrich the characters, and make the emotional highs and lows even more effective.
The musical score deserves special praise. Rather than simply accompanying the story, it elevates it. The soundtrack enhances both the romantic and tragic elements, creating unforgettable emotional resonance.
Most importantly, Pursuit of Jade demonstrates an exceptional understanding of human psychology. Nearly every major character carries emotional wounds. Themes of revenge, grief, duty, survival, loyalty, sacrifice, and resilience are explored with remarkable depth and sensitivity.
The result is a drama that functions simultaneously as a historical epic, political thriller, romance, and character study.
Pursuit of Jade is more than a successful television series. It is proof that serialized storytelling can achieve the emotional and artistic power of great cinema when exceptional writing, directing, acting, music, cinematography, and production design come together in harmony. It stands as one of the most emotionally powerful and narratively sophisticated Chinese historical dramas of recent years.
Beyond his appearance or popularity, what ultimately remains with the audience is the impression of an actor who succeeded in creating a fully realized human being—someone shaped by suffering, loyalty, contradictions, vulnerability, and hope. That is the kind of performance that endures long after the final episode ends.
As a Romanian viewer, I rarely write long reviews. Pursuit of Jade made me do so because it stayed with me long after the final episode.
English is not my first language, but I wanted to share how deeply this drama affected me.

Pursuit of Jade

Was it a good drama? Yes. Was it intriguing? Yes but was it perfect? No. The cast, the storyline, the effects, the acting everything was good but the arrangement of story made the story lack its soul. And in many places it felt like the drama has been cut out. Like sudden change of Li hui'an, and many more scenes felt like half. Also the war scenes were very basic, because I have seen much better war scenes. Here the war scenes felt like childs play. In many instances I felt like I have skipped a episode or something because continuity was missing in many places and also fire in Qi min's background story also felt confusing. Also the people fantasizing over Qi min are actually psychopaths, guys he killed hundreds and thousands of people, also him treating qianqian is nothing to be fantasized. I really don't understand those peoples, Most of them are those Wattpad readers who romanticise the forced love.

But overall it's a very good drama, which will keep us all awake.
