The First Ever Zombie Apocalypse BL Has Arrived, and It Was Worth the Wait

I have watched over 500 BLs across more than 10 years, and there has always been one genre I desperately wanted to see combined with BL: a zombie apocalypse. So when the trailer for The Last Oath randomly appeared on my Facebook, I immediately knew I had to watch it. There was absolutely no way I was missing the first ever zombie apocalypse BL.

After 12 episodes, I AM OBSESSED.

The atmosphere of The Last Oath is exactly what I want from a zombie apocalypse series. I love that abandoned feeling of a world where humanity has collapsed and nature has slowly started taking over again. Trees and greenery surround abandoned buildings, technology is almost completely absent, and the characters have to depend on basic survival skills to stay alive. The forest locations are absolutely stunning, but there is also something eerie and unsettling about how beautiful the world looks while danger could be hiding anywhere and zombies could appear at any moment.

This is exactly what I want from an apocalypse story because the characters actually have to SURVIVE. They search for canned food and supplies, use maps instead of phones, carry flashlights, live together for protection and leave their shelter to hunt for resources. They fight zombies using axes, knives, bows and arrows rather than conveniently having unlimited guns and ammunition. These little details make the world feel much more believable and immersive.

And the zombies are actually SCARY.

They are fast, aggressive and brutal. Once someone gets bitten, the infection takes over incredibly quickly, so there is constantly a sense of danger. The violence is not watered down either. We are getting blood, gore, brutal deaths and proper zombie action. That death in the opening episodes was absolutely brutal and immediately showed me that this series is not afraid to kill characters.

The story follows college student Lin Zai, who discovers that he appears to have a mysterious immunity to the infection. He becomes caught up with Special Agent A Leh, who was originally sent after him, but circumstances force them to depend on each other for survival. It is such a perfect setup for enemies to lovers because they might not completely trust each other, but in this world they NEED each other.

A Leh also had one of the coolest character introductions. He is fast, dangerous, brutal and an incredible fighter. Watching him take on zombies with his dual knives and slash his way through them was epic. He immediately has that mysterious badass energy that makes you want to know more about him.

Both Chen Liang as Lin Zai and Chen Ming Han as A Leh are absolutely gorgeous, but thankfully their chemistry is just as strong as their visuals. That scene where Lin Zai slowly cleaned the dirt and blood from A Leh's face and revealed his handsome face underneath honestly felt like love at first sight. Then Lin Zai ripping open A Leh's shirt to treat his wound gave us even more tension. Somehow, in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, we have already managed to get our first CPR kiss too. I am definitely not complaining.

Their dynamic is already one of my favourite parts of the series. One is dangerous and mysterious while the other possesses an immunity that could potentially change everything. Now they are stuck together in a world full of zombies where trusting the wrong person could get them killed. Give me enemies to lovers, forced proximity, survival and romantic tension and I am SOLD.

Most importantly, THIS IS ACTUALLY BL!

That was probably my biggest concern going into the series. I did not want to wait more than 10 years for a zombie apocalypse BL only to get another bromance disguised as one. Thankfully, we are getting genuine romantic chemistry, attraction and actual kissing scenes. The romance is clearly part of the story rather than something viewers have to imagine for themselves.

The series also has 24 episodes at around 22 to 23 minutes each, which I am really happy about. The episodes might sound short individually, but with 24 episodes, that is roughly equivalent to a standard 12 episode series with longer episodes. For me, this absolutely feels like a proper full length BL rather than a short series.

The pacing has also been excellent so far. There is barely any wasted time. Within the first two episodes we already have zombie attacks, survival, brutal deaths, action, mystery, character development and romantic tension. With four episodes releasing each week and 24 episodes in total, we actually have a proper story to look forward to.

The Last Oath brings together everything I wanted from a zombie apocalypse BL. Zombies, survival, brutal action, gorgeous leads, realistic zombie makeup, beautiful post apocalyptic scenery, enemies to lovers and actual romance all in one series. It has the danger and intensity of a proper survival story while still giving us the chemistry and BL elements we came here for. What more could I ask for?

The first 12 episodes have already delivered almost everything I wanted. The story is thrilling and intense, the production looks great, the scenery is beautiful, the action is exciting, the music works well, the leads can act and their chemistry is already there. Most importantly, the zombie scenes actually make my heart race because I care about whether these characters survive.

And can we talk about that NC scene in Episode 12? I was NOT expecting them to go that far! It was so hot, intense and passionate, and you could really feel just how much their relationship had changed. After everything they have been through together, all that built up tension and desire finally exploded, and I was completely caught off guard!
The kisses, the moans, the passion and their incredible chemistry made the whole scene feel so intense. It is honestly so hard to find a series that delivers great acting, a strong plot, amazing chemistry and unforgettable NC and intimate scenes all at the same time, but The Last Oath somehow nails every single box for me. This series really has it all!

My only very minor criticism so far is that I noticed a little CGI and what appears to be AI in a few scenes. However, these moments are very brief, blend smoothly into the story and never distracted me from the overall experience. The strong acting, intense fight scenes, exciting plot, beautiful locations and everything else the series does well easily outweigh those few seconds for me. Personally, I would much rather have a few moments of CGI or AI if it helps bring an ambitious zombie apocalypse BL like this to life than not have a series like this at all.

Of course, we are only 12 episodes in, so there is still a long way to go. But if the quality, pacing, action and chemistry continue at this level, I can genuinely see The Last Oath becoming one of my favourite BL series of the year.

10/10 so far.

A Zombie BL That Actually Understands the Apocalypse

Survival Comes First
What impressed me most about The Last Oath is how seriously it treats its setting. This is not simply a romance with a few zombies wandering around in the background. The characters need shelter, food, supplies and protection, and even entering an abandoned building can become a life or death situation. There is a constant feeling that nowhere is completely safe, which makes the quieter scenes just as important as the action. 🧟

Action With Actual Consequences
Another surprise was how intense some of the zombie encounters are. These infected are FAST, so characters cannot simply stand around deciding what to do. People panic, mistakes happen and survival often comes down to seconds. A Lie arriving to save the group was such a satisfying moment because by then the episode had already built enough danger for his appearance to feel earned rather than convenient.

More Than Just Two Handsome Leads
Of course Chen Liang and Ming Han are very easy on the eyes, but I am glad the series is giving me more than visuals. Lin Zai's immunity creates a bigger mystery surrounding the outbreak, while A Lie clearly has more going on beneath the surface. Their connection is still at the very beginning, and I actually hope the series takes its time developing it rather than rushing straight into romance.

The supporting group deserves some credit too. Watching ordinary people trying to work together and make survival decisions gives the story another layer beyond the main pairing. I already find myself wondering who is going to survive until Episode 24 and who is going to completely break under the pressure.

There are a few moments where AI are noticeable, but they are brief and honestly did not affect my enjoyment. When everything else is giving me an ambitious zombie survival story, strong action, interesting characters and BL all in the same series, a few seconds doesn’t matter, who cares 👬

Two episodes in and The Last Oath has already convinced me that this combination can actually work. It feels different from everything else I am currently watching, and instead of knowing exactly where the story is heading, I genuinely want to discover what happens next.

Definitely worth the watch!

I can understand where a lot of people are coming from with the ai aspect but there's so many bls and dramas in general where they have to use it because of the low budget. Yes, it's bad but it's not like we can fly over to Asia and stop them. I personally just skip a scene i can tell is ai. If the plot is good then it has my watch.

Besides the ai, it's honestly so good. I've easily grown attached to the 2 main leads when i was only on episode 4. The chemistry is there and the music choices (sadly just found out that most if not all songs, are ai) are perfect as well. The only downside so far would be the zombies.. as someone who loves the zombie apocalypse trope, some of these zombies are lacking hard 😭. Anyways, i hope they'll be able to end it off right without leaving open endings or rushing it because i love it.

Hooked

Honestly i understand people not liking AI being used, but I really don't care, i love the music and think this series shows how AI can be used to enhance a project rather then something 100% AI generated, the story is keeping me hooked and i love their chemistry. The music is going straight on my playlist as its really calming and i never skip the intro because i love it!

Please don't just go 'AI is used so i won't touch this' a lot of time and effort has gone into this project and its come together really well! If you enjoy the zombie genre, so far its done well, zombies aren't the best but definitely seen worse, and it gives me Last of Us vibes, although i actually prefer this series to Last of Us which i admittedly dropped due to not liking the main leads, i definitely don't have that with this series.

KEEP AI SLOP AWAY FROM ART

AI needs to stay away from creative spaces. period.
I am disappointed because I desperately wanted this to be great, but idk.
The premise is fantastic. A zombie apocalypse BL. A breath of fresh air. Manhwa readers know how well such a plot can be executed. Do they do that here? I'll have to say no. There's a lot of inconsistencies & holes.
The obvious AI shitty music makes me want to throw my phone across the yard. Some of the special effects & the title sequence is also prompted. There has been great media before AI & is still after AI. There are literally a 100 other ways you can do this on a budget. Use them.
Lots of things that don't make logical sense. Like the magically appearing clothes & invisible neighbouring houses on aerial shots.
The make-up is atrocious, they look pastey white is most lightings.

The episodes are short & it has good pacing, so you won't get bored at all. It would've been soo much cooler if the makers had a better budget. I wish they would avoid these mistakes for their next project if there is one, because this one has potential.

The Normalization of AI in Media is Dangerous

So far, good story, good acting. I've noticed a lot of complaints about the heavy use of AI in this series. I see both sides of the argument.

I understand a series of this quality, if it was done entirely with human labor, human creativity, etc, it would be quite costly. However, my biggest concern is that we as a global society start to normalize the use of AI in media.

We have reached a point where we do not know what is real and what is fake. Meaning societies are now exposed to crafty manipulation without much oversight. There should be clear warnings placed on series that use AI generated content.

Even the music is mostly AI generated. I don't know how how I feel about not having an artist to connect to a piece of work. The beauty of humanity is our uniqueness and our talent. When I went looking for the artist who performed the song at the end of episode 1, I was disappointed to not find it and then realize in the credits it's possibly AI generated. This realization is not just annoying, it feels like I can never form an attachment to this piece of work in the long term.

I suspect rewatch value on shows and movies will plummet, what will happen to cult classics and media that you resonate with because they are human?

I use AI daily for work, but in media, I just think the creative arts show now be tainted by this technology or at least heavily regulated.

I'm especially nervous about the continued use of AI in media as an American going into our next election season. Many people don't know how to spot AI generated content. Just imagine the confusion and misinformation we will deal with in 2027. This is a sad time.

So good and epic

I went into The Last Oath with basically no expectations and somehow ended up watching both episodes without even realising how quickly they went by 😭🧟‍♂️ There is something strangely addictive about watching two attractive men slowly get tangled up in each other’s lives while the entire world around them is falling apart 😂 The show can be dark and violent one minute, weirdly beautiful the next, then suddenly give you a small moment between the leads that makes you go 👀❤️ I also appreciate that nobody feels completely safe because these zombies MOVE and things can go wrong ridiculously fast 💀🏃‍♂️ The whole cast already has an interesting energy together, and I’m curious to see who I end up loving, who annoys me and who actually survives 😂 Two episodes was nowhere near enough. I need the next ones immediately 😭🍿🧟‍♂️

Zombie Apocalypse BL + Good Romantic Chemistry & Plot?!

And acting too?!!!! Hong Kong, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!!!

This is EXCELLENT!!!! Oh, it is such a good watch and a bit underrated??? Because why did it take me this long to watch it?

I remember starting it though, when it first aired but I wasn’t sure how I felt about it, so I put it aside, but decided to go back to it today! I’m so glad I did!!!

If you’re like me and you don’t know if you should give this a chance or not, PLEASE DO!

It’s the type of story I say I’ll watch even if it weren’t BL (there’s not much like this)

The story is SO GOOD! There’s just so much to look forward to. Each episode leaves you wanting for the next one.

And the romantic chemistry?!!! I usually don’t like “love in the time of war” tropes, but this one does the romance really well.

I can go on and on about how good this series is. But just to give you more perspective (I am sleep deprived) but this series still kept me up and I started around 11:00 pm, twelve episodes later, it’s 3:42 am right now. I stayed up binging the entire 12 episodes.

You get what I mean? DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS ONE.

The Last Oath Was Not What I Expected

i started The Last Oath mostly because the idea of mixing BL with a zombie outbreak sounded unusual, but I was surprised by how quickly the story pulled me in. What really works for me is that the show takes its survival setting seriously. Finding somewhere safe, searching for supplies and dealing with the infected actually matter, so there is always a feeling that something could go wrong. The zombies are fast and threatening, the action is surprisingly good and I really like the abandoned locations surrounded by nature because they give the series a strong atmosphere. LinZai being different from everyone else adds an interesting mystery, while ALie is easily one of the most intriguing characters so far. Their relationship is only just beginning and I actually prefer that because there is plenty of time for their connection to develop naturally alongside the survival story. The supporting characters also feel like part of the plot rather than just being there to fill space. There are a few small production imperfections, but nothing that bothered me enough to take away from how entertaining these first two episodes were. It feels fresh, ambitious and completely different from the BLs I normally watch. An easy 10/10 start for me and I really hope it keeps this quality.

Chinese zombie apocalyptic series? SIGN ME UP

I love zombie apocalyptic series so like when i saw this series has dropped i know that i have to watch it. I believe that they use AI elements to produce this series like the music or some parts of the series to enhance the zombie faces but honestly its not that bad like the acting and the plot as of now is quite decent.

I know that some people are turned off with the idea of AI being used in the series so I can understand why people wouldn't like or give this a watch. It's a valid reaction but it doesn't mean that you should hate on the series because the people who worked on this series also tried to give the best as they can. Even if i don't fully support ai being used in films, there shouldn't be any directed hatred towards the actors and people who made this series happened.
