The basic plotline (affair) is obviously similar. But also the complexity of the relationships. Both are drams that are darker, more intense romances that really challenge views and make them think about love and life.

Both center on the relationship between a married older woman and a younger man. These relationships begin entirely differently—Secret Love Affair begins with an intense attraction and passion, while Lost begins in an emotional kinship based on a shared feeling of despondency. What is similar in these relationships is how heart-wrenchingly real they feel, how brilliant the actors are, and the intimacy of their absolutely natural interactions. The characters are flawed, but still people you can come to understand. Both these dramas are very slow-paced and very willing to let the viewer sit in long moments of silence. The approach to telling these stories, the way the scenes were shot, etc. show considerable care and thought. Secret Love Affair has a more melodramatic storyline, but never in a way that feels over-the-top.

This is a love story about Ogawa Manami, a high school teacher who grew up in a strict family, and Kaworu, a host who is not good at reading and writing, as they search for love despite the obstacles they face. Manami is being pressured to marry a man she met through her father's introduction, and the high school where she works is also facing a crisis of class collapse. She spends her days lamenting, "I want to run away from this place."

One day, she receives a call saying that a student has been deceived by an unscrupulous host, and she rushes to the store to bring the female student back, where she meets Kaworu. Kaworu has to sign a promissory note promising not to contact the student in the future, and Manami finds out about the problem that he had kept secret from anyone until then. In the play, the two gradually become closer through Manami's secret "private lessons," in which she teaches Kaworu about language and society.

Older woman/Younger man trope. Insane chemistry. Extra marrital activities (ie. Cheating). Power struggles. Infedility. Rich woman/ poor man. Submissive man.
