Due to his commercial success, Kim is considered one of South Korea's biggest Hallyu stars of the early 2010s. He is also a style icon in Korea, having won several icon awards and a member of the charity football team "FC MEN". Hyun Joong joined the cast of "We Got Married" along with Hwang Bo. Known as the "Lettuce Couple", they won MBC's "Best Couple Award". The couple made their official exit from the show due to scheduling conflicts with "Boys Over Flowers".
In February 2015, Hyun Joong's ex-girlfriend was reported to be pregnant with his child. Hyun Joong stated that he would take full responsibility for the child. Hyun Joong's ex-girlfriend gave birth in September 2015. On January 2017, Hyun Joong's ex-girlfriend was found guilty and charged for attempted fraud as she lied about the abuse and the fake miscarriage. On February 2018, she was sentenced to jail and fined 5 million KRW (roughly $4,600).
Hyun Joong has enlisted on May 12, 2015, for his mandatory military service and was discharged on February 11, 2017. In July 2017, Kim released his first album since leaving the military, the Japanese single album, re:wind. The album reached the number one spot on the Oricon album chart. Following its release, Kim went on Innercore 16-city Japanese tour. In November, he released the EP Haze, his first Korean album in three years. He went on a World Tour 'HAZE' in 2018, then released "Take My Hand", the first Album released from his own record Label Henecia Music.
On April 14, 2020, he left KeyEast Entertainment, a representative from the company stated, “Recently, Kim Hyun Joong’s exclusive contract expired. Rather than renew, we mutually decided to support each other’s futures.” They continued, “Kim Hyun Joong’s album activities will continue through his personal label, which he established last year.”
On October 17, 2020, Kim Hyun-Joong held his first online concert, "A Bell of Blessing" and on October 19th, 2020, he released his second full Korean album, a limited edition album titled "A Bell Of Blessing" which debuted at 14 on the Gaon Weekly Albums Chart. The title track of the Album and it's music video features vocals and appearances from Kim Hyun-Joong's fans all over the world.
On February 27, 2022, his agency Henecia announced his marriage with a non-celebrity woman who has stayed by his side through his most difficult and exhausting time. The couple are not planning to hold a wedding due to COVID-19.
On July 21, 2022, it was confirmed by the agency that Kim's wife was pregnant.
