For the episode 5 recap, I am spark more interest in this suspenseful drama.
Episode 5 opens with Prosecutor Jo Hae Woo staring at a red circle drawn on the blue wall. The same background music, we heard when Hae Woo’s grandfather (Jo Seung Deuk) called the hit man to kill Professor Kang Hee Soo, plays.
This is not the actualstart of episode 5.
The actual start of episode 5
THE LAKE
Hae Woo slowly walks to Kim Jun (who is really Yi Soon, but no one knows whom he is yet) at the lake. She’s shocked to see the same man again who spoke the exact same words her first love said. “Like the North Star. It always points to the north, so it helps lost travelers find their bearings. That’s why it’s also called the navigation star, and it’s a dear friend to travelers.” (Okay he is throwing so many clues at her)
JO FAMILY CAR
Jo Seung Deuk, and his son, Jo Ui Sun ride together in the family car. A motorcycle zoomed pass their car.
Jo Ui Sun startled. His father, Jo Sueng Deuk, remained calm as ever. Jo Ui Sun whines (again). This time he doesn’t want his father to invite his friend’s son, Kim Jun, to their house. Besides, Jo Ui Sun is a disappointment to his father. (Gee, he has every right to be, his son is well he is just too weak.) Jo Seung Deuk decided to pluck his son nerves by telling him that Jang Man Chul is dead and maybe that’s why he is nervous. Jo Ui Sun lied and told his father that he was not nervous. (Seung Deuk really wanted to slap him across the head, but he held his peace because they were meeting an important client, Kim Jun.)
THE LAKE
Hae Woo and Kim Jun chatted for a while. She found out that he is the special guest her grandfather was expected. I think she apologized so many times for not acknowledging him the first time they met. He told her it was okay. He changed the subject and asked her “what was the name of the lake?” She told him people called it different names, but he was only interested in what she called it. She said, she called it, “The Lake.” Any other name would ruin the originality or feeling of the lake. She apologized again. This time it’s because she felt nervous and flustered when she first met him at her wedding reception. She gets emotional at times (Hae Woo, you are telling this man too much information about yourself.)
Kim Jun who is a gentleman at heart (as long as you don’t pissed him off) notice how uncomfortable she was and changed the subject. He asked her, “Are there are any fish in the lake?” (Of course, he knows the answer. He had been there with his dad and sister before he met Hae Woo). She tells him that there is a legend that a 1,000-year old gold fish lives in the lake. “They say [1,000 year old goldfish] guards the lake and surrounding meadow. People who fall under its spell jump into the lake and never return. Of course, it’s a legend.” (Okay here we have another big clue or is it a ruse about the ending of this drama.) Hae Woo tells Kim Jun that she doesn’t want the legend to be true because that means people will never return. (Secretly, Hae Woo believes Yi Soo is alive.)
Kim Jun looks up at the sky and say, “I think it must be nice…to see the stars from here.” Hae Woo looks at him again, and her thoughts are wow he did it again. How in heaven and hell does this man say the exact same words her first love said? Background music – Heaven and Hell by BOA.
She suddenly remembered her grandfather is coming soon. They slowly walked back to the house. Kim Jun walks behind Hae Woo. The heaven and hell song played. Kim Jun reached out to her. He longs to touch her again. A quick breeze lifts Hae Woo’s scarf off her shoulder. Kim Jun catches it in time. He hands it to her. When he hands it back to her, her wedding ring shines. (Gee, really. He knows she's married.)
Her husband and childhood friend, Joon Young, watches them from afar. He is always watching people. I swear I think that man is a spy or something.
Joon Young walked down the short rocky path to meet his wife, Hae Woo and Kim Jun. Kim Jun formely introduces himself as “I’m Giant Hotel’s Kim Jun” He told Joon Young that Jo Seung Deuk invited him. Joon Young had no idea Kim Jun was connected to the powerful Giant Hotel. Kim Jun didn’t want anyone to know his second identity.
BYUN’S HOME
The Byun are Yi Hyun’s adopted parents. Detective Byun adopted Yi Hyun after her brother was presumed dead. But there was so much blood there. He had to be dead. Yi Hyun asked her adopted dad if the case he was working on had anything to do with her brother, Yi Soo. Yi Hyun is very optimistic. She hopes her brother is still alive, but Detective Byun saw the accident. As much as he wants to believe he is living a normal life. Yi Soo might be in a wheelchair or worse bedridden.
FAMILY JO’S VACATIONHOME
Ms. Park and her staff set the table on the patio for the Jo Family. Jo Seung and his spoil son, Jo Ui Sun. Hae Woo’s dad (I’m glad she took her wits from her grandfather or mother). Jo Ui Sun complained about Kim Jun not being present. I’m not sure if Joon Young or Hae Woo took the time to tell him that he was there and he was just taking a walk. But then again, Jo Ui Sun would have started complaining about a stranger walking around in his woods without his permission. Perhaps it was better if they said nothing. Jo Ui Sun turns up his nose at his father’s friends background (Gee I can’t wait to see what that document really says about the Jo Family. I hope it would shut up that snobbish Jo Ui Sun. It will hurt Hae Woo just a little, but I am sure she will bounce right back. But her dad poor thing he probably end up in a mental hospital. Hey now these are just my comments.) Ui Sun looks down on yakuza. So I had to look that up. So yakuza is a crime syndicate. Oh boy that Ui Sun doesn’t have a clue what his daddy really does. Poor thing.
Kim Jun introduce himself as Jun Yoshimura to Jo Seung Deuk, Hae Woo’s grandfather.. He used his Japanese name instead of his second Korean name. This is a sign of respect.
SOMEWHERE NEAR THE JO’S VACATION HOME
A motorcycle deliver guy hands a package to a man. This is the same motorcycle that zoom pass the Jo Family Car.
FAMILY JO’S VACATION HOME
Patriarch Jo is relieved to finally meet his friend’s son.He is really proud that his friend was able to succeed in a foreign land and become wealthy. He thought his friend had no one to share his wealth with. He continues talking and says, “I think fate is stronger than blood.” (Oh wow, really Papa Jo. Why you say something like that around your son. You know the boy is sensitive. At this moment, I wait for the whining from baby Jo.) Before Spoil baby Jo can start complaining Hae Woo compliments her grandfather. She tells him that the world would be a better place if everyone act like her grandfather. No one is acknowledging whining Jo so he needs to get some attention. The best way he knows how is to pretend to be an adult by asking business questions. Jo Ui Sun says, “Is it true that Giant Hotel is expanding into Seoul? I’ve only heard the rumors, but haven’t seen anything concrete so far. I don’t know if your business methods are usually secretive. But something just doesn’t seem transparent here.”
Kim Jun replied, “That’s just how we usually conduct business. It’s the yakuza way.” (BAM in your face, Ui Sun.)
Ui Sun gave a half cock apology. Let’s be honest. He will never apologize because he is never wrong. Then he keeps blabbing about how straightforward and honest he is. That why he says what’s on his mind. (Okay, this shows that your daddy did not take you to those charm schools the other rich kids went to.) Then somewhere out of the blue, Jo Ui Sun tries to give Kim Jun a lesson in hotelier. He says, “It’s [hotel] an industry that requires hospitality above all else.” Unbelievable, this comment comes from the same man who insulted his guest and talks with food in his mouth. Of course, Kim Jun comes back with a better comment and said, “I think it’s also a show of hospitality to listen when the other person is talking.” Jo Ui Sun agree with Kim Jun, but then complain that Kim Jun could be reading other people’s thought. (Where in the world did he get that idea? The man’s not working with a full deck. ) Then Jo Ui insults Kim Jun again by telling him he is a dishonest person. Well he doesn’t say it in those words. He says it with these words, “You need to be honest like me if you want to gain people’s trust.”
Wow an insult covered up as a lesson. Gee, Jo Ui Sun must think Kim Jun is stupid or something. The man is second in line to the Giant Hotel. Poor Jo Ui Sun is on the sideline somewhere I really don’t think his father would let him take over Gaya Hotel. That’s why he is training his son-in-law to take over the business.
Kim Jun comes back with a stronger attack when he says this to Jo Ui Sun, “I don’t think there’s anyone who’s perfectly honest. Everyone has a secret they hide from others. And sometimes, people pretend to be honest in order to hide their secret.” Jo Ui Sun becomes so flustered that he throws the wine out of his glass.
Joon Young changes the mood and asked Kim Jun how long was he staying in Korea. Kim Jun simply said a while. How long is a while, a few week or a few months? Well I guess as long as he needs to get his revenge.
Ms. Park returns to the patio with something in her hand. She recognizes Kim Jun from earlier. He gave her a ride home. She had no idea that he was the famous guest. She hands the package to Hae Woo. It’s the same package the guy on the motorcycle handed to the delivery guy. (Okay let’s rewind. The man on the motorcycle that zoom in front of the Jo Family Car works for Kim Jun. Back to the scene.)
Well anyway, Ms. Park told everyone that the delivery man said it was urgent that Hae Woo gets the package right away. So she rushed up to the patio to deliver it to her. Hae Woo opens the brown box. She sees a man’s watch. Her husband asked was it for him. She smiles at him and said nothing. That same spooky music played when she takes the watch out of its box. She turns it around and saw her father’s initial on it.
Shock, Surprise, Stunned. Yes, she is feeling all that at that moment. Her father recognize the watch. It looks exactly like the one he threw in the river 12 years ago. She looked at her father with a confuse stare. (Her grandfather looked at her father like he wanted to slap him across the head.)
(Gee I wonder if he regrets bailing him out. He should have let him suffer in jail for a couple of years.) So shock by the watch, she makes up a lie and says, “There’s no more wine.” This is her excuse to leave the patio, but she has other plans. Back at the patio, her father is frightened, he shakes the full wine glass in his hand. Kim Jun stares at him. He has a smirk on his face. The almost the same smirk his adopted father had on his face that night the professor first met Jo Seung Deuk.
Hae Woo went to the lake instead. The watch still her in hand. Flashback time. She reminisces about the night her first love, Yi Soo, was ran over by that Mack Truck. She remembered his exact words.
“Things might get tough for you, too. Maybe even too toughfor you to endure. “ – Teenage Han Yi Soo
Jo Ui Sun, Hae Woo’s father, talks to his lawyer, Prosecutor Oh about the watch. He insists that it is not the same watch because in his word, “I threw it away. With my own two hands!” (Seriously, did he really need to tell the lawyer how many hands he used to throw a watch? I have heard people say I built it with my own two hands, but never threw a watch a way with my own two hands. How stupid is this man).
Jo Ui Sun continues shouting on the phone, but Prosecutor Oh remains calm and cool. Jo Ui Sun demands that Prosecutor Oh reassigns his daughter to another case because he doesn’t want her digging around. Prosecutor Oh tells him he can’t stopped her from investigating on her own and besides the case is too old. (Perhaps they think she will never find something. The watch Jo Ui Sun threw in the lake somehow reappeared. He has every right to be nervous).
Jo Ui Sun thinks his hit-and-run accident was a simple case. But Prosecutor Oh tells him, “It’s not a simple hit-and-run case…Everyone connected to that accident 12 years ago has been killed. We don’t know who’s responsible, but we know their motives aren’t so simple. So… if there’s anything you’re hiding from me, there could be trouble.”
Jo Ui Sun become flustered once again. His own lawyer is accusing of something more than hit-and-run. He was ready to argue some more, but his daughter Hae Woo shows up. He hurries to end his phone conversation.
Hae Woo shows her father the watch and said this watch is yours isn’t it. “Twelve years ago, the person responsible for the hit-and-run wasn’t Yi Soo’s father, but you.”
Her father insists and says, “Are you going to keep talking nonsense? How many times do I have to tell you it wasn’t me?”
She replies and said, “Of course, this watch is new. The watch at the scene of the accident… I’m sure you’ve gotten rid of it already.” (Okay so it is not the exact same watch. It is a replica.)
She continues and say, “This watch.. means someone is trying to send me a message.”
That is the last thing her father wants to hear. Someone is sending his daughter messages that he was the one who did it. He walks away, but she stops him with these words.
“The watch at the scene of the accident. Did Detective Jung Man Chul discover it? And after getting in touch with you. He covered it up. Of course, he must’ve received a bribe.”
She is really interrogating her own dad. Her father can’t take the pressure and tells her to “stop saying such ridiculous things.”
Then she really added fuel to the fire when she said, “The day Jung Man Chul was killed. Where were you then?”
Gee after all that pressure she had the nerve to ask him to think of her as her daughter and not Prosecutor Jo. Really, I know her father is short changed in the brains, but he is not that dumb to realize his own daughter is trying to prosecute him for a crime he avoided for 12 years.
LATER THAT DAY
Hae Woo gets another clue on her phone. It’s a picture of a passenger bus. She calls Detective Byun. The same picture was sent to his phone, too. She tells him, “I think the suspect is using it to lead us to Hope Market.” Her husband, Joon Young, waits for her at the car. Detective Byul said, “Don’t say anything yet about the message.”
She ignores Detective Byeon and tells her husband.
“Someone…keeps sending me and Detective Byeon the same messages…. They’re just photos. They seem to be connected to the case from 12 years ago. But I have no idea what this person wants.”
Her husband replies, “You mean Yi Soo’s case…There are many other competent prosecutors, you know. I know more than anyone else why you became a prosecutor. I too want you to avenge Yi Soo’s unjust death. But I don’t want you to suffer for it. So if it’s too hard for you, it’s okay for you to walk away from this.”
I feel sorry for Joon Young because he will never get all of Hae Woo’s love because she still has a large space in her heart for her first love, Yi Soo.
However, Joon Young is a cunning and conniving. I don’t trust him.
HOSPITAL
A young boy finds out that someone paid for all of his grandfather’s medical expenses and move him to another room. The receptionist said it was a relative, but the young grandson was his only relative. He ran out to look for him. Kim Jun walk behind the young boy.
This is the same young boy who witness the hit-and-run accident 12 years ago.
The young boy called his guardian, Detective Kim. He told him, he had the money that Detective Kim gave him to pay for the bill. But someone already paid it. (Detective Kim works with Prosecutor Jo Hae Woo)
JO FAMILY HOME
Jo Ui Sun whines to his father again about the twelve year old case. He doesn’t know who this mysterious person is. The only one who knows about what really happen is his dad, Jang Man Chul, Prosecutor Oh, and him. He complains about how this will ruin Hae Woo’s image of him.
His father blurted out, “A true father would first think about the pain he’d be causing his child. You don’t deserve to be a father.”
Ms. Park stands outside the door. She holds tray with drink in his hand. She hears everything. The man, Han Young Man, she loves confesses to a crime he did not commit. She is so stunned by the shock of the news. She walks away in a trance.
Meanwhile...
At the Bus terminal, Kim Jun puts a clue in locker number 0022 at the bus terminal. Kim Jun stares at the aquarium in his hotel room. His assistant said she wanted to put a shark in there for him, but it was too small. She decorated his room just like he requested. She even left one wall bare. He smile just a little. Her smile brighten her day. (She has a crush on him).
He asked her if she contacted Kim Dong Soo. Kim Dong Soo was Yi Soo’s other good friend. She said yes. She gets ready to leave, then he asked her.
“Aren’t you curious about my connection to Kim Dong Soo?”
She replied, “Yes I’m curious. But I believe that if it was for me to know, then you would’ve told me already.”
City Street
Kim Dong Soo and Yi Hyun walked down a city street. Kim Dong Soo tells Yi Hyun about his new job as a driver for Giant Hotel. She pokes fun at him and asked him if he sure he wasn’t working for a motel owner. She asked him if he was an hotelier.
He says, “Well that’s not exactly my field, so I refused that position. So I’ll be more like a road manager. I’ll be the driver for the hotel’s manager.”
Yi Hyun says the hotel manager must be an old if he needs a driver.
Dong Soo never met the manager. He only saw the secretary. He tells her how beautiful she is, but she is not as pretty as Hae Woo or Yi Hyun.
Yi Hyun doesn’t hear his compliment. She’s mesmerized by the white telescope. She has stared at that thing since she was a little girl.
Yi Hyun receives a call from her adopted mom, Detective Byeon’s wife. When she gets home, the white telescope she stared at every day was in her house.
She called the store just to make sure they had the right person. They told her she won a sweepstakes. She was so excited that she recorded the phone conversation.
Kim Jun was on the phone thanking the store owner for telling Yi Hyun she won the telescope. He had an identical telescope in his hotel room.
City street
Hae Woo and Detective Byun walk to Hope Market. Detective Byun stops walking and Hae Woo walks faster. When she gets to the door, Detective Kim walks out the store. She is surprise to see him there. He told her that she showed him a picture of the store. He wanted to investigate on his own. Hae Woo don’t remember showing him the picture. The only person in the store was a mute middle school girl. Hae Woo and Detective Byeon walk in to see if they can find any clues, but there was nothing they can find until the middle school girl stopped them.
HOPE MARKET
She wrote her conversation on a notepad. She wrote, “Are you Hae Woo?” Hae Woo said yes. The middle school girl gave her a house key. She wrote she was told to give it to her. Hae Woo wanted to know who gave it to her, but the middle school girl did not know the man’s name. Before they left the middle schooler showed a drawing of Hae Woo.
KIM JUN’S HOTEL ROOM
Kim Jun (Yi Soo) finally put something on the empty wall. It is the painting by Chagall’s Orpheus. This is the same painting Hae Woo enjoys looking at when she was a high school student. (The painting at school was place against a white wall. But in Kim Jun’s room. It is place against a dark wall.) He thinks about the story of Orpheus. Orpheus had a chance to live with his wife again if and only if he did not look at her when she was in the underworld, but he couldn’t resist and look back at her.
Kim Jun (Yi Soo) whispered to himself, “Don’t look back.”
PROFESSOR KANG HEE SOO’S OLD APARTMENT
Detective Byeon stands at the bottom of a flight of stairs. This is the same place where Professor Kang Hee Soo was murdered. Prosecutor Jo (Hae Woo) and Detective Kim joined him. He tells him he needs to check if the key fits that door. Detective Byeon walks upstairs alone. Detective Kim told Hae Woo, “The last person that Jung Man Chul spoke on the phone with was your father.”
Detective Byeon rings the door bell. No one answers.Prosecutor Jo (Hae Woo) said no one is home. He asked her for the key the middle school girl gave her. The key opens the door. When Detective Kim walks in the room, he sees Detective Byeon and Prosecutor Jo (Hae Wo) staring at a blue wall with a red circle.
Detective Kim said, “It’s the same sign as the one we saw on Jung Man Chul.”
Prosecutor Jo Hae Woo asked Detective Byeon to tell her what this means. She knew about the hit-and-run accident, but how does this place connects to what happen 12 years ago. She wonders. Detective Byeon asked Detective Kim to leave the apartment so he can talk to her alone.
He told her that the Kang Hee Soo was murdered there twelve years ago. He was the lead detective on the case. Han Young Man was the last person to see him alive. Han Young Man and Kang Hee Soo were not friends. There only connection to each other was her grandfather, Jo Seung Deuk. He told her that Kang Hee Soo met her father the night he was murdered. Han Young Man was ready to turn himself in when he was murdered that night twelve years ago. His dead body was found at the police station. Han Yi Soo was convinced his father was not involved in the hit-and-run accident.
Detective Byeon and Prosecutor Jo both agree that things are not adding up. Detective Byeon believes Han Young Man, Yi Soo’s father, left something in the train station locker. Yi Soo found out what it was. He was killed for it.
Detective Byeon said, “Three murder cases are all some how linked. If we can only find the motive.”
The three link cases.
(The three cases are connected to the document Professor Kang Hee Soo showed Jo Seung Deuk. )
JO FAMILY HOME
Joon Young calls his wife, Hae Woo, to find out where she is and when she’s coming home. He told her he will pick her up when she finished. Ms. Park knock on his bedroom door to tell him dinner was ready. He told her he had ate dinner at the hotel. She was ready to leave then she asked Joon Young about the Korean-Japanese guests, Kim Jun, age. Joon Young said, he wasn’t sure, but he believe he was close to his age.
(All right, Ms. Park, she might have figure that Kim Jun is reallyYi Soo. The clues fit. He is the same age as the missing Yi Soo. She was relaxed around him when she met him at The Lake. He didn’t have a problem finding his way around the compound or mansion.)
HOTEL
Kim Jun wears tan jacket and black jeans. He’s headed outside when he sees Secretary Jang enters the hotel late at night. She greets him. Kim Jun told her he wanted to walk alone at night. Before he could reach the door. A sharp pain attack his leg. She pleads for him to go to the hospital,he refuses. He knows what's causing the pain.
Flashback
Secretary Jang reminiscence about the conversation she had with Kim Jun’s father. He told her he only trust one person and that person is her.
(Well he has every right not to trust Kim Jun (Yi Soo). He did pay someone to run him over with a Mack Truck to save Yi Soo’s life.)
Hae Woo looks for the North Star, but she can’t find it. She walks to the Panja Restaurant. Kim Jun (Yi Soo) sips on his soju. (Hmm, she found her North Star). She’s shock to see him there. She asked him if he was alone. He asked her the same questions. They both were alone. Kim Jun invited Hae Woo to join him. He needed a friend to talk to. He said, “You look tired.” Okay, now that comment deserved a yes or no response. But Hae Woo tells him about the case. Wait a minute, didn’t Detective Byeon tell her not talk about this to anyone. This includes her first love Yi Soo/Kim Jun. He even encourages her to drop the case. He tells her that the case will get solve eventually. But she can’t let this case go because it involves her first love, Yi Soo. She asked him a question that left him speechless for a while.
HaeWoo said, “If in search for the truth, you might end up losing a love one (her father).”
(Flashback time, Yi Soo told her something similar 12 years ago. He was also talking about her father.)
Kim Jun tells Hae Woo, “If you want to find the truth sometimes you need to be prepared to lose something precious to you.”
Kim Jun encourage by telling her to stay positive. Then she confessed to him that she was going to drop the case.
Hae Woo said, “On my way here I was thinking of a way to walk away from this case. Though I shouldn’t walk away for my friend’s sake. Come to think of it I feel somewhat encourage every time I see you.” (He knew she still had feelings for him. He heard it in her voice.)
Later, they are standing outside the restaurant. It is raining (or a downpour). Hae Woo tells Kim Jun her husband is coming soon. They can give him a ride back to the hotel. Kim Jun told her he prefer taxi.
He walks away, then suddenly he remembers he needs to find out one more thing. He turns around he kisses her on the lips. Hae Woo shock walks away and comes back to slap him in the face. (Kim Jun/Yi Soo wanted to know if there was still room in her heart for him. Since she didn’t slap in right away (in this episode), this tells him (and me) she still has room in her heart for him.)
